I believe children have a very pure sense of humor. Well, I would like to share my experiences with you.
The other day when I was out with a friend and her daughter Jane at a restaurant, Jane ordered an apple dessert, which was the most attractive dish in that restaurant. However, when she had a bite of the pie, she shouted loudly, “Mom, why does it look good but tastes like rubber?” My friend was uneasy. Then the waiter gave us another dish.
A child can say funny things. I was at a friend’s home for tea and her son, Mark, wanted her to get up. His mom replied, “I can’t, because my foot has fallen asleep now.” Little Mark then sang a song and asked, “Mom, will it wake up now?” We laughed together.
The other day we were having an interesting conversation over lunch and my friend, an animal activist (积极分子) , was arguing with another group member. Her son Tommy suddenly stood up, “Mom, people should never be allowed to shoot extinct animals!” That was funny and the child did manage to turn the argument into a pleasant conversation.
Well, children sometimes really surprise us. I think we can have a lot to learn from them. They can help us understand the simple world through their eyes.
  21. Why did Jane shout loudly in the restaurant?
  1. She wanted to make us laugh. B. She thought her dish was attractive.

C. She wanted another piece of dessert. D. She didn’t like the flavor of her food.

  4. He would like to get some attention.

23. What Tommy said made the whole group ____.

B

There is an English saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects on physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.

As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

25. Doctors have proved that .

  1. laughter can be tolerated B. laughter can work the muscles in the feet
    C. laughter is the only way to reduce pain D. laughter has the same effects on physical exercise

    1. Those who listened to different radio programs.
  2. Those who could produce a kind of chemical.
    C. Those who don’t have stress of pain.
    D. Those who listened to a funny program.
    27. The underlined word “diminish” is similar to .

      28. The main idea of the passage is .
      A. laughter and physical exercises have similar effects on the human body
      B. smile can produce the same effects as laughter
  3. pain can be reduced by laughter

New York — Wednesday, October fifteenth, is the first Global Hand Washing Day. Activities are planned in more than twenty countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap.
Experts say people around the world wash their hands but very few use soap at so-called critical moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.
Global Hand Washing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for Hand Washing with Soap. The goal, they say, is to create a culture of hand washing with soap. The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germs (病菌). They say the correct way to wash hands is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Then, rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth.
The Partnership says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend washing. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell, which increases the likelihood that people will wash again.
It also says washing with soap before eating and after using the toilet could save more lives than any medicine. It could help reduce cases of diarrhea (痢疾), which is the second leading cause of child deaths, killing more than one and a half million children a year, by almost half.
        32. The most suitable title for the text would be _____.
        A. Hand Washing Brings Good Health

        B. help the developing countries
        C. make a culture of hand washing in the third world
        D. promote the importance of soap in hand washing
        34. The following facts can explain why soap is important EXCEPT that _____.
        A. soap gets people into the habit of washing hands
        B. soap helps to get rid of more germs off hands
        C. soap attracts people to do more hand washing
        D. soap gives people a longer hand washing time
        35. According to the last paragraph, diarrhea is a disease that _____.
