第三部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分30分)

第一节(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)

A

You may be stuck in the airport for a variety of reasons. But what can you do to amuse(娱乐) yourself when stuck at the airport?

My husband and I were going to London for our honeymoon, but all the flights were cancelled due to the bad weather. We could have gone to Paris on the train for the evening, but we had no place to store our luggage at the airport. Plus, it was raining heavily. So we decided to spend our time in the airport.

Charles de Gaulle airport(戴高乐机场) in Paris gets lots of negative comments when it comes to service, efficiency and friendliness. But we managed. It’s all in your attitude. Here’s how we amused ourselves.

Airports are great places for people watching, especially if it’s one of the biggest airports in Europe. There are people from every corner of the earth coming and going. You can play games trying to figure out which language they are speaking. Or, like me, who is a writer, you can make up stories about them. And keep your eye out for celebrities, such as movie stars.

It’s comforting when you hear someone speaking your language. We met Frank, a world traveler from Australia, who was also spending the night in the airport. We hung out together and he kept us entertained with his travel stories. Thirty years ago, when he was a teen, he’d moved with his family to our city for one year. He knew the parks and he remembered some of the local television shows, and even the area he’d lived.

While I was in the bathroom, there was a mother and a couple of her kids there, too, speaking English. I asked where they were from. “Canada,” she said. “Me too. Where in Canada?” I asked. “Alberta,” she replied. “Me too! Where in Alberta?” I asked. “Edmonton,” she said. “No way! I’m from Edmonton!” What were the chances of that?

56. What happened to the author and her husband?

A. They were lost at the airport.B. they missed the train for Paris.

C. They lost their luggage at the airport.D. They were stuck at the airport.

57. What does the author do?

A. She is a movie star.B. She is a world traveler.

C. She is a writer.D. She is a flight attendant.

58. Which of the following is TRUE according to the fifth and the sixth paragraph?

A. The author happened to meet someone from her hometown in the airport.

B. Frank comes from Canada.

C. Frank would go to London with the author and her husband.

D. The author was tired of waiting in the airport.

59. What is the best title for the text?

A. An introduction to Charlie de Gaulle airport in Paris.

B. Reasons for Flights Being Late or Cancelled.

C. Ways to Amuse Yourself When Stuck at the Airport

D. Ways to Make Friends at the Airport.

B

When travelling, you may think that if you don't know the language, you can communicate using gestures. However, very few gestures are universally understood and interpreted. What is perfectly acceptable in this country may be rude in other cultures.

1. Pointing at something using the index finger. It is impolite to point with the index finger(食指) in the Middle and Far East. Use an open hand or your thumb in Indonesia.

2. Making a “V” sign. This means “victory” in most parts of Europe when you make the sign with your palm(手掌) facing away from you. But if you face your palm in, the gesture is very rude.

3. Smiling. This facial expression is universally understood. However, cultures can provide different reasons for smiling. The Japanese may smile when they are confused or angry while in other parts of Asia people smile when they are embarrassed. People in some cultures only smile to friends. It is important not to judge people for not smiling, or for smiling at what we would consider “inappropriate” times.

4. Waving one's hand with the palm facing outward to greet someone. In parts of Europe, waving the hand back and forth can mean “No”. To wave"goodbye", raise the palm outward and wave the fingers together; but this is rude in Nigeria if the hand is too close to another person’s face.

5. Forming a circle with one's fingers to mean"OK". Although this means “OK” in the U. S. and many other countries, there are some notable exceptions. In Brazil and Germany the gesture is obscene(猥亵的), while in Japan it means “money”. In France, it has the additional meaning of “zero” or “worthless”.

60. According to the text, when we travel to other countries________.

A. the same gesture can have different meanings
B. many gestures are universally recognized
C. a smile always suggests friendliness
D. we can still communicate without knowing the languages

61. When you talk to people from Brazil, you should remember not to ________.

A. smile at themB. make a “V” sign

C. make the “OK” gestureD. point at objects around you

62. The text is mainly to __________.

A. show that gestures are universally accepted
B. show the different meanings of gestures in different countries
C. warn readers of impolite gestures
D. teach readers how to understand gestures in other countries

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Curiosity is an important characteristic of a genius(天才). You can’t find an intellectual giant who is not a curious person. 66 This is necessary if you are to have a curious mind. Some things you know and believe might be wrong, so you should prepare to accept things you don’t know or you don’t quite agree on.

67 If you just accept the world as it is, you will certainly lose your “curiosity”. Try to discover what is beneath the surfaces of things around you. Ask questions from time to time. A sure way to discover what is beneath the surface is by asking questions: What is that? Why is it made that way? How does it work? And so on. 68

See learning as something that is fun. If you see learning as a burden, it will just make the burden heavier. But if you can find learning interesting, it will open another door. 69 Read different kinds of reading materials. Don’t spend too much time on just one subject. 70 It will introduce you to other possibilities that may interest you.
