How to Be a Winner

Sir Steven Redgrave

Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals

“In 1997 I was found to have developed diabetes(糖尿病) . Believing my career was over, I felt extremely low. Then one of the specialists said there was no reason why I should stop training and competing. That was it—the encouragement I needed. I could still be a winner if I believe in myself. I am not saying that it isn’t difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn’t finished yet. Nothing is to stand in my way.”

Karen Pickering

Swimming World Champion

“I swim 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. I manage that sort of workload by putting it on top of my diary. This is the key to success—you can’t follow a career in any field without being well-organized. List what you believe you can achieve. Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they are, and you’ll be a step closer to achieving them.”

Kirsten Best

Poet & Writer

“When things are getting hard, a voice inside my head tells me that I can’t achieve something. Then, there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to concentrate. When I feel tense, it helps a lot to repeat words such as ‘calm’, ‘peace’ or ‘focus’, either out loud or silently in my mind. It makes me feel more in control and increases my confidence. This is a habit that can become second nature quite easily and is a powerful psychological tool.”

Some parents said that they had difficulty in getting along with their children. I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling(叛逆). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching (紧握) at one another’s hands for reassurance.

They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up huddled (聚在一起) round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蚕茧) into a larger cocoon.

It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.

But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come — with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.

29. In this passage, the author wants to tell _______.

A. teenagers to try to decide things for themselves

B. readers to try to be popular with people around

C. parents to try to control and guide their children

D. people to try to understand and respect each other

30. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. There is no popularity that really counts.

B. What many parents are doing is helping their children from finding their own paths.

C. It is bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates.

D. Most teenagers claim that they want to do what they like to, but they are actually doing the same.

31. What does the author think of advertisements?

A. Convincing. B. Influential. C. Instructive D. Authoritative.

D

BEIJING - The Ministry of Environmental Protection on Wednesday reported malpractice(不法行为) in Hebei, the province that produces most of China's steel, after sending inspection teams to smog-hit areas.

It was found that some thermal(热气流) power plants, cement(水泥) and steel makers failed to stop or curtail production during severely smoggy days, said the ministry in a statement.

Small coal burning boilers in main urban areas were not shut down as required. Other malpractice included ineffective controls against dust pollution in construction sites.

According to the ministry, 12 inspection teams were sent to Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei Province and their surrounding areas on Sunday, to review the local governments' response to air pollution.

Violations revealed by the inspection teams will be harshly punished, said the ministry.

Almost all provinces in central and east China have been under a cloud since Friday, while Beijing and the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Henan and Liaoning have reported"severe smog."

A new report launched by Beijing authorities on the morning of February 24 indicates that the concentration of PM 2.5 has risen, with no sign of it decreasing, the orange warning will still be in effect, according to Xinhua News Agency.

According to data released by the Beijing Tourism Website, by 2:00 pm, February 24, popular scenic areas including the Great Wall and Palace Museum had been affected by the smog in terms of tourist numbers.

As for the Palace Museum, the number of visitors was only 11,200 that day, far from the figure of 40,000, which is the daily average number of visitors it normally receives.

There were a few visitors in Beihai Park on the morning of February 24, and two visitors from Hebei province plan to end their morning tour earlier than scheduled because of the smog with one of them saying “The visibility is poor, we can’t take good photos, we’d better leave early.”

In response to worsening air conditions, travel agencies have also started to avoid a further decline in tourist numbers. An employee with China Youth Travel Service, Wang Tao, said the agency will inform tourists of the weather conditions at their destinations. A tour guide with China Travel Service also told the media that it is a tour guide’s duty to inform foreign visitors of the smog conditions in Beijing, and the agency will provide free face masks to those in need.

32. According to the report, which of the following probably contributes to smoggy days?

①severe pollution from factories

②small coal burning boilers used in cities

③large numbers of private cars

④ineffective controls against dust pollution in construction sites

A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④

33. The word “curtail” underlined in the second paragraph most probably means _____.

A. reduce B. increase C. multiply D. promote

34. We can learn from the passage that____.

A. inspection teams were sent only to Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province

B. all the local governments' response to air pollution is satisfying

C. people may have trouble taking clear photos because of smog

D. the Palace Museum normally receives an average of 11,200 visitors

35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. face masks have been used for every tourist.

B. tourists care more about air conditions than before.

C. a tour guide needn’t inform foreign visitors of the smog conditions in Beijing.

D. travel agencies don’t take any measures to increase the number of tourists.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

What do the world’s most successful people all have in common?

By examining the work habits of over 150 greatest writers and artists and scientists, the researchers including Standford Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer found that high achievers like Robert Moses turn out to be all alike:

Busy ! Busy!

36 In a study of general managers in industry, John Kotter reported that many of them worked 60 to 65 hours per week—which translates into at least six 10-hour days. The ability and willingness to work difficult and tiring hours has characterized many powerful figures. Energy and strength provide many advantages to those seeking to build power.

Just Say No!

The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say “no” to almost everything. And that’s what gives them the time to accomplish so much. 37 And focus means saying “no” to a lot of distractions.

Know What You Are!

Ignore your weakness and keep improving your strengths. Don’t waste time exploring skill areas where you have little competence. Instead, focus on—and build on—your strengths. 38.

Create Good Luck!

Luck is not magical—there is a science to it. Richard Wiseman studied lucky people for his book Luck Factor, and broke down what they do right. 39 By being more outgoing, open to new ideas, following the feeling that something is true, being optimistic, lucky people create possibilities.

Does applying these principles to your life actually work? Wiseman created a “luck school” to test the ideas—and it was a success. In total, 80 percent of people who attended Luck School said that their luck had increased. 40.

A. Spend enough time to improve your weakness.

B. Achievement requires focus.

C. On average, these people reported that their luck had increased by more than 40 percent.

D. They never stop working and they never lose a minute.

E. Busy people are more likely to be lucky.

F. This means knowing who you are, what you are and what you are good at.

G. Certain personality types are luckier because they behave in a way that offer the chance for good opportunities.
