阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Samuel Osmond is a 19-year-old law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲) by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.

Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable .They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn't even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.

Samuel can't understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear them in mind---each and every note,” says Samuel.

Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can't play it. Samuel says confidently,” It's all about super memory---I guess I have that gift.”

However, Samuel's ability to remember things doesn't stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.

Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn't know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.

Every man wants his son to be somewhat of a clone, not in features but in footsteps. As he grows you also age, and your ambitions become more unachievable. You begin to realize that your boy, in your footsteps, could probably accomplish what you hoped for. But footsteps can be muddied(模糊的) and they can go off in different directions.

My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten. Science projects waited until the last moment. Book reports weren't written until the final threat.

I've been a newspaperman all my adult life. My daughter is a university graduate working toward her master's degree in English. But Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a “vo-tech” student(技校学生). They're called “motorheads” by the rest of the student body.

When a secretary in my office first called him “motorhead”, I was shocked. “Hey, he's a good kid,” I wanted to say. “And smart, really.”

I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don't often make school honor rolls(光荣榜).

But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don't have the abilities that motorheads have. I began to learn this when I had my car crashed. The cost to repair it was estimated(估计) at $800. “Hey, I can fix it,” said Jody. I doubted it , but let him go ahead, for I had nothing to lose.

My son ,with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got parts(零件)from a junkyard, and ability from vo-tech classes. The cost was $25 instead of $800.

Since that first repair job, a broken air-conditioner, a non-functioning washer and a non-toasting toaster have been fixed. Neighbors and co-workers trust their car repairs to him.

These kids are happiest when doing repairs. They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.

I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Most important, I have learned that fathers don't need clones in footsteps or anywhere else.

My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made mine.

16. What used to be the author's hope for his son?

A. To avoid becoming his clone.

B. To resemble him in appearance.

C. To develop in a different direction.

D. To reach the author's unachieved goals.

17. What can we learn about the author's children?

A. His daughter does better in school.

B. His daughter has got a master's degree.

C. His son tried hard to finish homework.

D. His son couldn't write his book reports.

18. The author let his son repair the car because he believed that_______.

A. His son had the ability to fix it.

B. it would save him much time.

C. it wouldn't cause him any more loss

D. other motorheads would come to help.

19. In the author's eyes, motorheads are _______.

A. friendly and hardworking

B. cheerful and smart

C. lazy but bright

D. relaxed but rude

20. What did the author realize in the end?

A. It is unwise to expect your child to follow your path.

B. It is important for one to make the honor roll.

C. Architects play a more important role than builders.

D. Motorheads have greater ability than office workers.

Like every language, American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come from the day-to-day life to the people and develop in their own way.

Our expression today is “to face the music”. When someone says, “Well, I guess I'll have to face the music.” It does not mean he's planning to go to the concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, any why you didn't do this or that. Sour music indeed, but it has to be faced. At some time or another, every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember father's angry voice, “I want to talk to you.” and only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!

The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. And where did this expression come from? The first explanation comes from the American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on the stage. When they got their cue(提示) to go on, they often said, “Well, it's time to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did--- facing the orchestra(管弦乐队) which was just below them. And an actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps hostile, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So the expression “to face the music” came to mean “having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.”

Other explanations about the expression go back to the army. When the men faced inspection(视察) by their leader, the soldiers would be worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean enough to pass inspection? Still the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

Another army explanation is more closely related to the idea of facing the results and accepting the responsibility for something that should not have been done. As, for example, when a man is forced out of the army because he did something terrible, he is dishonored. The band does not play. Only the drums tap a sad, slow beat. The soldier is forced to leave, facing such music as it is and facing the back of his horse.

21. How many ways does the phrase “to face the music” comes from?

A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4

22. What's the meaning of “to face the music?”

A. To face something far less pleasant. B. To face the stage.

C. To face the back of one's horse. D. To face one's leader.

23. Which of the following is a situation of facing the music?

A. When we are playing basketball

B. When we are making a speech

C. When we are having a party

D. When we are talking with somebody

24. The underlined word “hostile” means “_______”.

A. unfriendly B. unusual C. unimportant D. unnecessary

25. What is the article about?

A. The history of English idioms

B. Different explanations of an English expression

C. An English idiom only used in the army

D. What can people do when they “face the music”$来&源:

第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Alone But Not Lonely

In today's society, we've become uncomfortable with silence. We try to find different types of activities that can help us escape feelings of laziness or boredom. 26 Solitude(独处)does not have to be uncomfortable or lonely. In fact, solitude and loneliness are very different things.

The death of a loved one or the inability to find people who understand you can leave you feeling lonely. Even if you are surrounded by other people, it's natural to experience an emptiness while longing for love or acceptance. 27 Geoffrey F. Fisher once said, “In cities, no one is quiet but many are lonely. 28

We often fill loneliness with all types of unsatisfying activities. Young people would rather spend a Friday night out with strangers, than spend the night alone. They're looking for a way to kill time while they wait for true friendship. Then there are young adults in gangs where they don't really like their gang “friends”. 29 Why does being alone scare us?

Do not be afraid of silence. 30 It teaches you how to truly listen. It teaches you to pay attention to what's going on inside of you. Only when we are alone can we have the space and peace we need to think without being outwardly influenced. It therefore becomes easier to make important decisions as well as to reflect on how we are feeling.

A. Loneliness is therefore a feeling that can be experienced whether or not one is physically alone.

B. They would rather feel accepted on a shallow level than risk feeling alone.

C. The problem of loneliness can be easily solved in a modern world.

D. But, when doing so, the main thing we are trying to avoid is loneliness.

E. In the country, people are quiet but few are lonely.

F. It can provide you with amazing benefits.

G. It guides you through hardships.

A Possible Version:

To celebrate the coming new year, the New Year’s Gala took place on the third floor of our school stadium which enabled we students to relieve from the pressure.

A number of students from Grade 1 and Grade 2 gave creative and powerful performances on stage. Since it was the Chinese traditional new year that we celebrated, the gala was of Chinese traditional style with some girls dressed in ancient costumes dancing and singing. Besides, the historical dramas were so eye-catching that they won loud applause when they came to an end. Throughout the gala, everyone was in high spirits and they took many pictures of the performers. I was deeply impressed by the performances given by our teachers. With surprising talents for singing, they showed us a totally different side from what they were in the classroom. That’s why we love them even more.

It was an extraordinary gala and I am starting to look forward to the one for 2018.
