Father’s Day has a very short history. It was started because there was a Mother’s Day. And just because some Americans thought that if we had a Mother’s Day, we should also have a Father’s Day. Father’s Day has become important in North America. And shopkeepers found it was a good way to get people to buy presents for their fathers, presents from their shops.
By the way, very few countries have a Father’s Day, though some have Children’s Day, or a special day for boys and another for girls. More and more countries are having Mother’s Day, so maybe Father’s Day will also become popular before too long. Now, what do people in North America do on Father’s Day? The newspapers, radios, and TV tell children what they should do-buy a Father’s Day present for your father. They even tell a wife to buy a Father’s Day present-not for her father but for her husband, even if he is not yet a father. And they tell grandchildren to buy a Father’s Day present for their grandfathers.
The important thing to remember about Father’s Day is that American children can show their love to their fathers in a more open way.

Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?

As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it's not easy to change later in life.

Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their finances. This is part of our value system and it has a great impact on the way we look after our money.

According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant,the cricket and the snail.

The ant works first

Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don't care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest(投资)in some funds and stocks with low risk.

The cricket(蟋蟀)fun first

The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn't think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.

The snail lives under pressure

The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long term loans from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure whether they can afford it.This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.

24.People with the character of the snail would like to __________.

C One of the most recent social changes taking place in the world is social networking.Social networking has been in existence for at least 150 years, and probably longer than that. In the times before the invention of the computer and the World Wide Web (WWW), social networking was done in person. People who had similar likes and interests would gather together to share experiences, make new friends, and improve their businesses.

On the Internet, social networking websites made their first appearances during the late 1990s. The first major social networking website in the United States was MySpace. MySpace allowed its users to exchange messages, share pictures, and make new friends in a way that was never thought of in the past. With MySpace, people who did not go out much could reach out to others from their own homes.

In 2004, Facebook was created. It was first a website created for use by Harvard University’s students and teachers, but it soon expanded to include just about everyone. It is now larger than some of the largest companies in the world. It is a website that is changing all the time. Facebook has completely changed the way people stay connected with each other and the rest of the world. The way it works is simple. Users can set up a new account (账户) easily. All a new user needs is an email address to start. Once a person has created an account and his friend also has his own Facebook page, he can invite his friend by sending a request out to him. Once you get started, making new friends will come easily.

28. What can we learn about social networking?资*源%库

  1. It is not a new development.   B. It made World Wide Web famous.资*源%库

  3. MySpace led to the appearance of Facebook.
  4. MySpace was improved by Harvard University’s students.

30. What do new users of Facebook need to create an account?

  1. An email address.                  B. His friend’s help.

  C. High-speed network.            D. His friend’s Facebook page.

31. What does the passage mainly tell us?

  1. The way to be a Facebook user.
  2. The importance of social networking.
  3. Two important social networking websites.
  4. The differences between MySpace and Facebook.
    D
In an age when technology moves faster than most can keep up with, a small group of people still remain in the time of old-fashioned letter. Frankly speaking, I was once certain that traditional letters could never be replaced by other means of communication.
But a story about online communication changed my mind.
An old man, who suffered a lot from Parkinson’s disease, was not able to talk clearly and could hardly write his name. Living totally alone, he managed to keep in touch with nearly all the members of his family. How did he achieve(实现) this? He clicked out words on his computer keyboard.
I, therefore, managed to get an E-mail box as soon as the chance came. My life changed. E-mail, and all online communication, is something truly different. It has abilities that few other products can match.
E-mail is convenient. It takes less time with its fast speed and 24-hour connection. The slow postal service is no match(匹配之物). If you wouldn’t want to have a face-to-face talk with your manager, you might talk with him through E-mail even if you are in the same office.
Naming all the good things about online communication is not easy. But wait. E-mail can be inconvenient. It can waste time and energy. Just think what may happen when you take a short vacation and return to find your e-mail box filled with 200 unread messages. You could easily spend half a day clearing junk ads.
Then, online communication will keep us staying at our computer while it connects us to distant strangers. Once we throw ourselves into the machine, we may forget the human touches we once held so dear. I’m sure there is and always will be a place for the old-fashioned letter, phone call, and face-to-face meeting… even in the world of modern communication.
As I listen to the sound of the modem(调制解调器), I was excited at stepping out to the outside world but, at the same time, I sensed a loss of control over something valuable in my personal life.
    32. What caused the writer to become interested in E-mail and online communication?
    1. His own illness. B. The sound of the modem.

C. A sick old man’s experience. D. The changing of his life.

33. What does the writer think of online communication?

  1. It should replace old-fashioned letters completely.
  2. It is perfect and always does good to you.
  3. It is extremely useful and convenient, but it may be inconvenient or even harmful.
  4. It does more harm than good.

34. According to the writer, traditional means of communication will never disappear because ________.

  1. they help to keep the friendly relationship between people
  2. they are convenient and popular though they are slow
  3. most people cannot keep up with the development of technology
  4. modern means of communication does too much harm

35. How did the sick old man keep in touch with his family members?

  1. By visiting them regularly. B. By writing letters with his pen.

C. By making telephone calls. D. With the help of his computer.

When someone has deeply hurt you, you may feel 61 very difficult to let go of your anger. But forgiveness is possible and it can be 62 great benefit to your health. So far, research has shown that people who forgive have more energy, better appetite and better sleep. “People who forgive show 63__ (little) anger and more hopefulness,” says Dr. Frederic Luskin, 64 wrote the book Forgive for Good. “So it can help reduce the tiredness and allow people to feel more 65(energy).”

So when someone hurts you, cool down first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a 66 (beauty) scene in nature, or someone you love. Don’t wait for an apology. “Many times the person who hurt you may never consider 67 (apologize),” says Dr. Luskin. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things 68 same way.”

Dear Jack,

I’m glad to know you will come to our school next term. In order to make you adapt to our school, I’d like to give you some advice and I think it may help you.

When you come to our school, I think you’d better introduce yourself so that you will be known to us .Secondly, you should help us to learn English when we have difficulty with it and at the same time we are willing to help you to learn Chinese. Thirdly, you can join us in all kinds of activities in our school ,such as sports meet and Singing Competition. By doing this ,you will get along well with us. Last but not least, you should treat your friends as you want them to treat you. If you treat people with love and respect, they will treat you with the same.

I hope that you will find these suggestions useful.

Yours,

Xiaoming

Text 10

What do Napoleon and Clinton have in common? They are both left-handed.

Today, about 15% of people are left-handed. But why are people left-handed? The answer has to do with the way the brain works. The brain has two halves — the right half controls the left side of the body, and the left controls the right side of the body. So, right-handed people have a strong left-brain, and left-handed people have a strong right-brain.

The two halves of the brain are about the same size. But each side controls different things. The left side controls language, math, and logic. When you remember new words, or when you put things in order, you use your left side. The right side of the brain controls your love of art, colors, and music. It is also good at recognizing faces.

This doesn’t mean that all artists are left-handed and all lawyers are right-handed. Some right-handers have a strong right-brain, and some left-handers have a strong left-brain.
