In ancient Greek mythology we learn about a young man named Narcissus. He was so

beautiful that he fell in love with his own reflection (倒影) . He became obsessed (自恋) , but soonrealized that what he loved was not real. As a result, he became sad and died. In the place wherehe had stood appeared a soft yellow flower –a narcissus. This is where the word “narcissism” came from. Unfortunately, narcissism is often used toshow disapproval because it is usually used to mean being self-centered and not caring aboutothers. However, part of the reason that narcissism carries these negative meanings is that manypeople admire themselves in an unhealthy way. But the truth is that good self-love is necessary forour mental health, scientists say.A study published 10 years ago shows that low self-esteem is responsible for many socialproblems, and it can affect teenagers seriously. When they feel less confident and not as good astheir classmates, teenagers are more likely to suffer from depression, commit suicide, get pregnantand bully others, according to the BBC.The other reason that narcissism is considered an ugly thing is because we are taught that weshould care more about others than ourselves and that it’s better to give than to receive.Thinking about others is the right thing to do, without question. But psychologists say thatthe love of others is actually based on self-love. If you see yourself as an unpleasant stranger, howcan you be capable of making friends with anyone else? After all, you are closer to yourself thananyone else. After years of study, scientists also found that parents play a big part in building a child’sself-belief. Only if the parents approve and accept their children, do they feel loved and learn tolove themselves. The next time you look in the mirror, try to tell yourself that you are one of a kind. Pick outyour best qualities and be proud of yourself.

61. The main purpose of Paragraph 1 is to _______.

  1. tell a sad Greek myth about lost love

  3. explain why being narcissism can harm our health
  4. warn people not to be self-obsessed

62. The underlined word “disapproval” is closest in meaning to _______.

  1. agreement B. argument C. dislike D. dishonesty

63. According to the text, low self-esteem _______.

  1. can make teenagers self-centered
  2. is the result of putting others before oneself
  3. has nothing to do with how a person was raised
  4. can give teenagers mental health problems

64. It is suggested in the article that _______.

  1. people should admire their reflection in the mirror
  2. people should be confident and appreciate their good qualities
  3. people should put others before themselves
  4. people should be more self-centered

65. What would be the best title for the passage?

  1. Love others or yourself? B. Learn to love yourself

C. Self-love D. Narcissism

Our Fears Can Change the Reality of the Situation

At times, our worries and anxieties can defeat us. In addition, our worries can change our

understanding of what is reality and what is not. Here is a brief list of skills that you can use to

help gain a better viewpoint on things during your anxious moments.

71 A person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few

minutes to get their mind off the problem. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music,

or do an activity that will give them a fresh opinion on things.

Remember that our fearful thoughts are made to seem worse and can make the problem

worse. 72 When unexpectedly having thoughts that make you fearful or anxious,

challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common

sense.

Be smart in how you deal with your fears and anxieties. Do not try to deal with everything all

at once. When facing a current or upcoming task that drives you anxious, break the task into a

series of smaller steps. 73

Remember that all the worrying in the world will not change anything. Most of what we

worry about never comes true. 74 Everything else you can leave in the hands of God.

It is not easy to deal with all of our fears and worries. When your fears and anxieties have the

best of you, try to calm down and then get the facts of the situation. The key is to take it slow. All

you can do is do your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it

easy. 75

  1. Take it one step at a time and things will work out.
  2. When feeling anxious, stop what you are doing and try to do something relaxing.
  3. This will give you the confidence to manage your anxiety.
  4. Instead of worrying about something that probably won’t happen, concentrate on what you
    are able to do.
  5. The next time you feel anxious, review your list and think about the good things that you
    have in your life.
  6. A good way to manage your worry is to challenge your negative thinking with positive
    statements and realistic thinking.
  7. Finishing these smaller tasks one at a time will make the stress more manageable and

increases your chances of success.
