      请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
      A
He’s an old cobbler(修鞋匠) with a shop in the Marais, a historic area in Paris. When I took him my shoes, he at first told me: “I haven’t time. Take them to the other fellow on the main street; he’ll fix them for you right away.”
But I’d had my eye on his shop for a long time. Just looking at his bench loaded with tools and pieces of leather, I knew he was a skilled craftsman. “No,” I replied, “The other fellow can’t do it well.”
“The other fellow” was one of those shopkeepers who fix shoes and make keys “while-U-wait” -- without knowing much about mending shoes or making keys. They work carelessly, and when they have finished sewing back a sandal strap (鞋带) ,you might as well just throw away the pair.
My man saw I wouldn’t give in, and he smiled. He wiped his hands on his blue apron (围裙), looked at my shoes, had me write my name on one shoe with a piece of chalk and said, “Come back in a week.”
I was about to leave when he took a pair of soft leather boot off a shelf. “See what
I can do” he said with pride. “Only three of us in Paris can do this kind of work.”
When I got back out into the street, the world seemed brand-new to me. He was something out of an ancient legend, an old craftsman with his way of speaking, his pride in his craft.
These are times when nothing is important but the bottom line, when you can do things any old way as long as it “pays”, when, in short, people look on work as a path to ever-increasing consumption (消费) rather than a way to realize their own abilities. In such a period, it is a rare comfort to find a cobbler who gets his greatest satisfaction from pride in a job well done.
      56. Which of the following is true about the old cobbler?
      A. He had the best repairing tools. B. He was the only cobbler in the Marais.
      C. He was proud of his skills. D. He was a native Parisian.
      57. The sentence “He was something out of an ancient legend.” (paragraph6) implies that .
      A. nowadays you can hardly find anyone like him
      B. it was difficult to communicate with this man
      C. the man was very strange
      D. the man was too old
      58. According to the author, many people work just to .
      A. realize their abilities B. gain happiness
      C. make money D. gain respect
      59. This story wants to tell us that .
      A. craftsmen make a lot of money B. whatever you do, do it well
      C. craftsmen need self-respect D. people are born equal
      B
Phyllis Wheatley is regarded as America’s first black poet. She was born in Senegal, Africa in about 1753 and brought to America at about the age of seven. John and Susannah Wheatley bought her for three pounds at a slave (奴隶) market in Boston in 1761. Phyllis was soon accepted as one of the family, which included being raised and educated with the Wheatley’s twin 15-year-old children, Mary and Nathaniel. At that time, most females, even from better families, could not read and write, but Mary was probably one of the best educated young women in Boston. Mary wanted to become a teacher, and in fact, it was Mary who decided to take charge of Phyllis Wheatley’s education. Phyllis soon showed her remarkable talents. It was the first book published by a black American. In 1775 Phyllis wrote a poem about George Washington and sent it to him. He responded by praising her talents and inviting her to visit his headquarters. After both of her benefactors (恩人) died in 1777 and in 1778, Phyllis was freed. She married in 1778, moved away from Boston, and had three children. But after the unhappy marriage, she moved back to Boston, and died in poverty in 1783.

The Wizarding World(魔法世界) of Harry Potter theme park will open in Florida in 2009,and will provide attractions and rides based on places from the Harry Potter books.

The novels’ author JK Rowling has already given her blessing to the project. She said, “The plans I’ve seen look unbelievably exciting, and I don’t think fans of the books or films will be disappointed.”

Stuart Craig, the man in charge of the design of the park, is an Oscar-winning production designer who worked on the Harry Potter films so it should be faithful(忠实的) to JK Rowling’s vision.

Visitors to the park will be able to explore some of their favourite places from the book such as the village of Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and, of course, Hogwarts Castle, where Harry goes to school.

Although fans can look forward to a holiday in the Harry Potter theme park, many will be saddened by the fact that the best-selling series (系列)is now drawing to a close.

The final instalment(分期连载的一部分) in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be published on 21 July, and to mark the event JK Rowling is to read extracts(摘录) from the book to a select audience at midnight on the day of publication.

A moment later I heard my uncle calling me, and found the two men on the road together. The captain then addressed me as if I was his equal, which was very pleasing to a young fellow like me.

"Sir," said he,"Mr. Balfour tells me great things of you, and I like your looks. I wish I was staying here longer so that we might become friends. But we'll make the most of the short time that we have. You must come on board my brig(双桅船) for half an hour and have a drink with me."

Now, I cannot describe how eager I was to see the inside of a ship. But I was not going to put myself in danger, and I told him my uncle and I had an appointment with a lawyer.

"Yes," said he,"he told me of that. But, you see, the boat will set you on shore farther along, near Ran Keillor’s house." And here he suddenly leaned down and whispered in my ear:"Take care; the old devil(恶魔) has evil plans. Come on board till I can have a word with you."

Then, passing his arm through mine, he continued aloud, as he set off towards his boat:"Now what can I bring you from Carolina? Any friend of Mr. Balfour can ask for what he likes. A roll of tobacco? Indian feather work? A wild beast's skin? A stone pipe? A mocking-bird that cries just like a cat? Make your choice and give your order."

By this time we were beside his boat and he was helping me in. I did not dream of refusing. I thought (like a fool) that I had found a friend and helper, and I was looking forward to seeing the ship. As soon as we were all in our places the boat was pushed off and began to move over the water. I was so delighted with this new experience that I hardly understood what the captain said, and must have answered him without thinking.

As soon as we were alongside, Hoseason ordered a rope and chair to be sent down, declaring that he and I must be the first to go on board. I was lifted into the air and set down again on the deck(甲板), where the captain stood waiting for me and immediately slipped his arm under mine. I stood there, rather confused and perhaps a little afraid, but delighted with the strange things all around me, while the captain pointed out some of the strangest and told me their names and uses.

And then I saw that my uncle was not with us.

I felt I was lost. With all my strength, I tore myself out of the captain's grasp and ran to the side of the ship. Yes, there was the ship being rowed back to the shore, with my uncle sitting in it. I gave a wild cry-so loud that it rang out over the harbor, and my uncle turned around and showed me a face full of cruelty and terror.

That was the last thing I saw. Already strong hands had been pulling me back from the ship's side, and now lightning seemed to strike me. I saw a great flash of fire, and fell unconscious.

第四部分 任务型阅读 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。

注意:每空格1个单词。

Wealthy Chinese do not have a good reputation(名声), a survey by China Youth Daily and Sina.com has found.

The poll(民意测验), conducted last week, showed about 70 percent of 3,990 interviewees believe the rich are immoral(不道德的) and not worthy of respect. Only 4 percent thought rich people are good, the survey said.

For the rich to become popular they need to do three things, the survey suggested.

First, they need to have a sense of social responsibility. Second, they need to be self disciplined, and third, they need to have a caring heart.

The number of people who make at least $50,000 a year increases by 15 percent a year and, according to the China Economic Times, the country now has 1.5 million rich people.

The China Youth Daily and Sina.com survey found interviewees questioned how the rich became rich in the first place.

"Some rich people are thought to have gathered their wealth through illegal means, such as bribery(受贿)," said a post-graduate student at the Communication University of China.

Even so, the survey found wealthy people who obey the law, have a sense of social responsibility and a caring heart, are respected.

The poll showed about 60 percent thought these kinds of wealthy people were worthy of respect.

The survey suggested many voters were much better disposed(倾向) toward rich people from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Western economies - rather than the mainland.

Hong Kong property tycoon(巨头,大亨) Li Ka-shing was most highly regarded, followed by Bill Gates, mainland property tycoon Wang Shi and basketball player Yao Ming.

"Rich people on the mainland invest too little in charity(慈善) and gain too much," a student from Beijing Sports University said.

Yu Guoming, a professor at Renmin University of China, called on the heads of Chinese companies to think and invest in a long-term way."Corporate social duty is not only about charity, it also connects the company with the government and the public."

书面表达

The decision, which comes into force this term, has caused a heated argument. Opinions are divided on the topic.

Some people are for this decision. Their reasons are as follows. Firstly, this decision is very useful in developing students’ ability to study independently. Secondly, it’s good for students’ physical and mental health.

However, other people hold the opposite opinion. For one thing, they are worried that some students can’t make good use of their spare time after school. Instead, they will waste their time going to the internet Café. For another thing, students can’t get high scores with less homework. As a result, it’s challenging for them to go to key university.

As far as I’m concerned, I support this decision. It means we will have more free time. We can study what we want, take part in activities and build our character. But some of us are afraid of being forced to attend various training classes by our parents.
