A man who failed to return more than 700 children’s books to five different libraries in the county was put into prison. Yesterday he was set free after a book publisher agreed to post his bond (担保金) of $1,000. The publisher said, “There’s a story here. This is a man who loves books. He just can’t let go of them. He hasn’t stolen a single book. So what’s the crime? We think that Mr. Brush has a story to tell. We plan to publish his story.”
When asked why he didn’t return the books, Mr. Brush said, “Well, how could I? They became friends to me. I was afraid to return them, because I knew that kids or dogs would get hold of these books and chew them up, throw them around, rip the pages, spill soda on them, get jam and jelly on them, and drown them in the toilet.”
He continued, “Books are people, too! They talk to you, they take care of you, and they enrich you with wisdom and humor and love. A book is my guest in my home. How could I kick it out? I repaired torn pages. I dusted them. I turned their pages so they could breathe and get some fresh air.
“Every week I reorganized them on their shelves so they could meet new friends. My books were HAPPY books. You could tell just by looking at them. Now they’re all back in the library, on the lower shelves, on the floors, at the mercy of all those runny-nosed kids. I can hear them calling me! I need to rescue them. Excuse me. I have to go now.”

When travelers check the flight board at the airport and see some routes are being called off, it can fill them with a sense of worry. This can happen to any tourist at any time, due to airline strikes, volcanic eruptions(火山爆发) or a number of other disasters. While they will possibly be late to return home, there are several things travelers can do before departing or during an emergency(紧急情况) that can help the process go as smoothly as possible.
According to Australia News, travelers should be well-informed about the place they plan to visit ahead of time. If journeying to a place that’s known for flooding or hurricanes, a daily weather check by smart phone or laptop may help tourists not take the airport all together if an emergency should happen unexpectedly.
Some travelers may wish to stay away from the daily news while trying to relax on vacation, but it can be important to know the latest event in your new place. If trouble seems to be happening, travelers can make several plans before the crowds form.
Having help on speed dial is the key to quickly finding solutions in time of need. Organizing some kind of escape route for travelers and their loved ones will keep everyone knowing where they are during an emergency. Know where the highest ground is in areas likely to be flooding, or plan out a way to escape fire at the hotel before disaster strikes.
One important way to prepare for emergency situations is ensuring travelers have at least two forms of payment. Local money is key when there is not an ATM or a credit card is useless. If guests in a foreign country have to offer payment for last minute transportation plans out of an area, having cash on hand may be the easiest way to find quick solutions to stay safe, according to Money Wise.
Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best is the ideal way to travel, just in case any natural disasters, illnesses or other tough disasters get in the way of a vacation. This will lessen as much stress as possible when dealing with emergencies that can happen on a trip.
32. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. What to do when a disaster happens on a trip
B. Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best
C. How to make good preparations for a travel abroad
D. How to plan for quick escape and emergencies on vacation
33. How many main particular preparations for emergency does the author suggest in the passage?
A. 3 B. 4 C. 5 D. 6
34. According to the passage, when traveling abroad, travelers ________________.
A. should check the daily weather at hometown by smart phone
B. had better not pay attention to the latest news in the new place
C. should turn off their telephones to enjoy themselves
D. need to prepare two or more forms of payment
35. The author writes this article in order to help those who ___________.
A. want to travel on holidays B. hope to settle abroad
C. have survived a disaster D. stay in dangerous situations

Dear Zhang Sha,
I am an editor of English Corner. I’ve received your letter asking me to give you some advice on how to learn English well. Here are some of my suggestions:
First of all, I suggest you read the English words, sentences and short articles aloud every morning. Meanwhile, you should try to memorize the useful sentences as many as possible and recite some short passages as well. Besides, it is suggested that you read a great variety of books after school. Last but not least, a certain amount of time should be spent on listening exercises.
In my opinion, as long as you can make good use of your spare time to learn English, surely, you will make great progress. Just as the saying goes, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” If you hold on to your dream and study hard, I’m sure you will be successful in your English learning some day.
All the best!
Yours sincerely,
Wang Ping
听力材料:
Text 1:
W: Excuse me, I turned in my homework at 12 o’clock last night. Do you know why I got a 0?
M: Yes. It’s because you actually turned it in at 12:05. We don’t accept late homework.
Text 2:
W: Do you know where we’re going? Pull over so we can check a map.
M: Where should I pull over?
W: Right there between those trees.
Text 3
W: How was your weekend? Did you go on that trip?
M: No, but it was still pretty good. At least I got a lot of homework done and had some of my mother’s home cooking.
Text 4:
W: What would you do if your teacher asked you to give a speech, Greg?
M: I’d say I had a headache.
Text 5:
M: Excuse me, ma’am. Can you please stop asking so many questions? I understand that you’re curious, but we have to allow the class to continue.
W: OK, sir. There’s just one more thing I don’t understand…
Text 6:
W: If we spend two weeks in Paris like you want, we won’t have much time left to visit my friend.
M: Where does she live?
W: In the south of France. I haven’t seen her in fifteen years, and we were so close! Couldn’t we fly there? It would save time.
M: I don’t know… I need enough time to visit my family in the city. And then we’re going on a little side tripo with John and Rachel. That will take at least eight days, because we’re going all the way through Italy by car.
Text 7:
M: Hello, ma’am. What kind of game is this?
W: Hello, young man! We’re playing lawn bowling.
M: How do you play it?
W: Oh, you roll a ball, just like I in normal bowling. One difference is that we play outside on the grass. Another difference is that we use much smaller balls, four for each player. You can also knock someone else’s balls to get more points.
M: May I try it? It looks like fun.
W: You can come back two on Wednesday afternoon. That’s when we give free lessons.
M: OK. Can I stay to watch the game this morning?
W: Of course!

M: Oh, that’s good. So, which restaurant do you think is the most well-known?
W: McDonald’s.
M: What makes it so popular?
W: The employees there are helpful and polite, and the tables and floors are quite clean. Most important of all, customers can get the same food at any McDonald’s in any state or country. The food, of course, is quite good. French fries, hamburgers, sandwiches… all are specially prepared.
M: I see. Well, it’s lunchtime now. Let’s get some hamburgers from McDonald’s.
Text 9:

W: Of course!
M: Good. You could study the way animals grow or how they act. There will be a scientist teaching these things at the camp.
W: I’m interested in learning about how plants change over time.
M: Wonderful! Then this is the perfect place for you. A famous plant scientist will be joining the camp staff this year.
W: Great! How much does it cost?
M: It’s free. But you have to apply. Only a small number of students get to attend each summer. You will be competing against about three hundred others.
Text 10
The city of Pompeii was a major Roman tourist nearly two thousand years ago. It was a very rich town. Pompeii was a popular vacation place for the romans. Many wealthy Romans had summer homes in Pompeii and would live there during the hot summer months. Pompeii was right next to the sea, so it was an important place for trade. The land was also very good because of the nearby volcano. After a volcano explodes, the land becomes better for growing things. The area around Pompeii was excellent for grapes. This volcano was called Mount Vesuvius. In the year 79 AD, Pompeii was destroyed by this volcano. For several days before, there had been many earthquakes. NO one realized that this meant the volcano would explode soon. About 16,000 people died, which was almost the whole population of Pompeii. The city was completely covered in ash from the explosion. Everyone forgot about it until the 1700s, when they discovered the buried city again.
