The Healthy Habits Survey shows that only about one third of American seniors(老年人) have correct habits. Here are some findings and expert advice.

1. How many times did you brush your teeth yesterday?

Finding: A full 33% of seniors brush their teeth only once a day.

Step: Remove(移除) the 300 types of bacteria in your mouth each morning with a battery-operated toothbrush(牙刷). Brush gently for 2 minutes, at least twice a day.

2. How many times did you wash your hands or bathe yesterday?

Finding: Seniors, on average, bathe fewer than 3 days a week. And nearly 30% wash their hands only 4 times a day-half of the number doctors recommend(推荐).

Step: We touch our faces around 3,000 times a day-often inviting germs (病菌) to enter our mouth, nose, and eyes. Use toilet paper to avoid touching the door handle(把手). And, most important, wash your hands often with hot running water and soap for 20 seconds.

3. How often do you think about fighting germs?

Finding: Seniors are not fighting germs as well as they should.

Step: Be aware of germs. Do you know it is not your toilet but your kitchen sponge (海绵) that can carry more germs than anything else? To kill these germs, keep your sponge in the microwave(微波炉) for 10 seconds.

Americans like to travel on their yearly(每年的) holiday. Today, more and more travelers in the United States are spending nights at small house or inns(客栈) instead of hotels. They get a room for the night and the breakfast the next morning.

Rooms for the night in private(私人的) homes with breakfast have been popular with travelers in Europe for many years. In the past five to ten years, these bed-and-breakfast places have become popular in the United States. Many of these America’s bed-and-breakfast inns have only a few rooms; others are much larger. Some inns do not provide telephones or televisions in the rooms, others do.

Staying at a bed-and-breakfast inn is much different from staying at a hotel. Usually the cost is much less. Staying at an inn is almost like visiting someone’s home. The owners are glad to tell about the areas and the interesting places to visit. Many vacationers(度假者) say that they enjoy the chance to meet local families.

25. Americans take a holiday trip _________.

A. all the year round      B. for years      C. every year        D. every other year

26. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. Some Americans like to stay at bed-and-breakfast homes instead of at hotels.

B. The bed-and-breakfast inns are private homes open to vacationers.

C. The bed-and-breakfast inn owners provide a morning meal for their visitors and a room for the night.

D. The bed-and-breakfast inns have been popular in America for a long time.

27. Staying at the bed-and-breakfast inns, _________.

A. the travelers needn’t pay anything

B. the travelers don’t have to pay for the telephone or television

C. the travelers can meet and talk with the local people

D. the owners will show the travelers around the area

C

Will it matter if you don't take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment(实验), these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.

Opposite(相反) to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

28. During the test, those who were tested were given ________.

A. no breakfast at all             B. very rich breakfast

$来&源: C. little food for breakfast      D. different breakfasts or none

29. The results of the test show that ________.

A. breakfast has a great effect on work and studies

B. breakfast has little to do with a person's work

C. a person will work better if he has a simple breakfast

D. those working with brains should have much for breakfast

30. The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don't eat breakfast, you will ______.

A. lose weight                    B. not lose weight

C. be healthier                   D. gain a lot of weight

31. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Poor breakfasts hardly affect those who work with brains.

B. Eating nothing in the morning may cause one to get thinner.

C. Reducing lunch and supper is of less value in weight losing.

D. Eating less in lunch and supper may help to lose weight.

D

Football is, I believe, the most popular game in England: one has only to go to the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for one side or the other. To a stranger, one of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge(知识) of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He will tell you who he expects(预料)will win such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times his age.

Most schools in England take football seriously-much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all very important and games are left for the children themselves. In England it is believed that education is not only a matter filling a boy’s mind with facts in the classroom: education also means the training of character(品格); and one of the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games; where a boy or girl has to learn to work with others for his or her team, instead of working for oneself alone. The school therefore plans games and matches for its students. Football is a good team game. It is good both for the body and the mind. That’s why it is every school’s game in England.

32. In paragraph 1, by “this” the author means ________.

A. people often go to football games

B. people, rich and poor, young and old, play football

C. football is the most popular game in England

D. people usually shout at each other in a football match

33. In England school boys seem _________ about football games.

A. not to know much         B. to know a great deal

C. to know little               D. to know nothing

34. In England, a boy’s opinion of a match is often ________.

A. three or four times better than that of adults

B. worse than that of adults

C. as good as that of adults

D. worth considering three or four times than adults

35. In England, education means_______.

A. filling a boy’s mind with stories

B. more than the teaching of knowledge

C. the teaching of knowledge only

D. training character by means of football games
