      第一节(共15题;每小题2分,满分30分)
      阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
      A
Are you looking for something to do? You might like to try one of these four experiences.
      Crocodile watching
Do you fancy getting up close to some of the most terrifying animals on earth? Crocosaurus Cove, in Darwin (Australia) has the “Cage of Death”. It’s an enclosure that’s lowered into a pool. This gives you a 360 degree view of a crocodile as it’s being fed. The cable broke once and the cage sank to the bottom, but they’ve fixed it since then.
      Edge walk
How about walking along the edge of a building several hundred meters up in the air? If that sounds like fun, head off to the CN Tower in Toronto (Ontario, Canada). Built in 1976, the tower is 553.33 meters tall.
The Edge walk consists of a 20-30 minute stroll along a 1.5 meter wide platform that runs around the tower’s restaurant roof. During the walk, you’re encouraged to lean forwards as you look over Toronto’s skyline (轮廓线).
      Plastic ball rolling
Do you fancy rolling down a hill in a plastic ball?
Plastic ball rolling is popular all over the world, but the place to give it a go is in Rotorua (New Zealand). Brother David and Andrew Akers came up with the idea in 1994. A typical orb (球) is about 3 meters in diameter, with an inner orb size of about 2 meters. There’s no brake or steering mechanism, but the inner layer of the plastic ball helps absorb the shock.
      Volcano bungee jumping
If you’re looking for the adventure of a lifetime, how about going bungee jumping off a helicopter into the crater of a live volcano? As part of the jumping, a helicopter ride takes you to the Villarreal volcano, one of the most active in Chile. Once you’re at the drop zone, you leap off the helicopter and fall into the volcano. Finally, you enjoy the ride back to the airport flying at 130kph.
Attracted by the above? If so, please contact us. Only half price from March 22 to April 25th For more information, please click here.

Each year there is an increasing number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling cars and trucks with gas. Americans won’t live without cars!
Most Americans would find it hard to think what life would look like without cars. However, some have realized the serious problems of the air pollution that is caused by the car. The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.
One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That’s what several of the large car factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.
Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. Inventors are now working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.
To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean.
But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.
Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.
  24. How many ways to get rid of air pollution are suggested in this article by the writer?
    1. OneB. TwoC. ThreeD. Four
  25. Large car factories are trying to build a clean car, .
    1. which is clean itselfB. which is used to clean streets
      C. which does not pollute the air D. which is easier to make
  26. If the number of cars is cut down, the most serious problem to American workers is .
    1. to have no work to do B. to keep the air clean
      C. to get a better lifeD. to go to work by bike
  27. What is the conclusion of the writer?
    1. Bicycling is the only way out.
    2. The number of cars must be cut down.
    3. Cars bring us nothing but serious problems.
    4. Cars bring us not only a better life but serious problems.
      C
The iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fashion. Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” — and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer — which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet — adopted the title in 2008. A lovely bear — popular in the US and the UK — that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down (精简的) version of The Independent newspaper was launched last week under the name “i”.
In general, single-letter prefixes have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use.
Most “i” products are aimed at young people and considering the major readers of The Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name.
But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, former head of the Language Center at King’s College London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous (模糊不清) . When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive (交互式的), Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition,” he says.
“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability (轻便).” Adds Thorne.
Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western world is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade.
But as history shows, people grow tired of fashion. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the trend unavoidably disappeared.
      28. People use iPlayer to _________.
      1. listen to musicB. make a call

C. watch TV programs onlineD. read newspapers

29. What is the Independent’s “i” aimed at?

  1. engineersB. young readers
    C. fashionable womenD. old readers
    30. Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are _________.
    A. easy to carryB. environmentally friendly
    C. advancedD. recyclable
    31. What is implied in the last paragragh?
    A. “i”products are often of high quality
    B. iTeddy is a living bear
    C. the letter “b” replaces the letter “i” to name the products
    D. the popularity of “i” products may not last long
    D
Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality(不测的事). And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.
    32. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?
    A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
    B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
    C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
    D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.
    33. The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ______.
    A. keep her appointment with the eye doctor
    B. meet her father who was already an old man
    C. join in the holiday celebration of the company
    D. finish her work before the deadline approached
    34. The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
    1. avoidedB. lackedC. abandonedD. took

35. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Emotional Well-beingB. The Two Saddest Words

C. The Most Useful RuleD. The Peace of Mind

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

It is necessary to be reasonable and flexible enough to avoid conflicts as much as possible and live in peace with others. 36 If you have done all your best to avoid conflicts and you are still arguing, then read these effective tips on how to avoid conflicts.

Don’t get in the center of the conflict.

Sometimes people can get in the center of conflicts due to their enthusiasm for offering help. Frankly speaking, it is very unwise, because it can make you the main figure of the conflict. 37 You should focus on your own life issues.

Be kind.

38 Life is full of conflicts and disagreements, that’s why you should find more conservative ways of dealing with them. For example, kindness can lessen the conflict.

Try to be a peacekeeper.

Peacekeepers tend to cooperate with people without bad emotions which usually lead to arguments and even conflicts. “39” This saying is the life motto of a natural-born peacekeeper. Don’t worry if you are not a natural-born peacekeeper; you can gain this skill during life.

Walk off.

When the conflict is gathering pace and you can’t manage to control yourself, you should choose to handle the situation in another way. By all means, try to keep yourself away from stress. 40 You should get away from the situation for a while.

A. The greatest victory is the battle not fought.

B. Conflicts are unavoidable, so try to accept them.

C. Weak people usually desire others to offer help and support.

D. Let other people solve their problems without your presence.

E. It is helpful to put some distance between yourself and the opponent.

F. When someone pushes you to the limit, try to act kindly towards this person.

G. Arguing can either break your friendship or affect your relationship to some degree.
