I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my job stand in the way of being a good parent.

I no longer consider myself as the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows(誓言) mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.

So here’s what I want to tell you today : Get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion , the bigger paycheck, or the larger house.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure , it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways, that, if I had had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.

I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned .

By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion as it ought to be lived.

22. How did the writer form her view of life?

  1. Through social experience    B. By learning from her friends

paragraph, the writer really means that people tend to _______.

  1. make a living rather than live a real life

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding. Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose friend’s trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly. Generosity(慷慨) means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feeling. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.

Sooner or later every one needs understanding and helping with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.

No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty ,generosity ,and understanding.

25. Some friendships don’t last very long because        .

  1. there are too many people who want to make friends
  2. some people receive friendship but don’t give friendship back
  3. those who give others friendship receive friendship from others
  4. they don’t know friendship is something serious

26. According to the passage honesty is ______   .

  1. something countable          B. the base of friendship

C. as important as money        D. more important than anything else

27.Which of the following isn’t mentioned in the passage?

  1. Always tell your friends the truth.
  2. Sharing your mind with your friends is of great value.

C. Discussing your problems with your friend often helps to solve the problem.

D.A friend who gives you his lunch money is a true friend.

For the first time in Hong Kong’s history an entertainer(艺人) has been written into middle school text books. He is considered one of the best actors in Hong Kong. Yes,he is Chow Yun-fat .

The example of his long hard struggle for success has been used in a chapter in a Hong Kong middle school textbook. Using his experience, students can learn to make the most of their time and to grab every opportunity to succeed.

On hearing about this,Chow said happily,“I really hope that my experiences can make young people understand that one should not be afraid of difficulties and setbacks(挫折) ,for they are the only way to success.”

Indeed,Chow has traveled a long and difficult path to reach his success. In 1955,he was born into a poor family in Hong Kong. When he was 17,he had to leave school. He worked in a number of jobs—as a postman, camera salesman and taxi driver. These experiences paved(为...铺路) the way for him to play all kinds of roles late in life.

Chow broke into the film industry in the late 1970s.He was one of the hardest working actors and starred in a number of popular TV dramas and files including Shanghai Bund and A Better Tomorrow. Since 1985,he has won many Awards including Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards and Hong Kong File Awards .

In 1995,he went to Hollywood. Although he was already in his 40s.He had to learn English. He even put chopsticks in his mouth to practice pronouncing certain sounds.

His film,Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon, began to gain him more fame and recognition around the world. In 1998,the mayor of Chicago set aside January 12 as “Chow Yun-fat Day”.

32.Chow Yun-fat has been written into middle school textbooks mainly because

__________.

  1. he plays best in Hong Kong     B. he keeps on struggling for success

C. his experiences are very special    D. he is well thought of

33.What can we infer from the passage?

  1. Chow Yun-fat is proud of his success.
  2. Chow Yun-fat is popular both at home and abroad.
  3. Chow Yun-fat prefers to make a living by selling cameras rather than by
    performing.
  4. Chow Yun-fat has won more awards than other actors.

34.The underlined sentence(in Paragraph 6 )suggests ____________.

  1. chopsticks is of great help to practice English pronunciation
  2. Chow Yun-fat is willing to struggle with difficulties
  3. Chow Yun-fat has suffered a lot since he went to Hollywood
  4. it is hard for a person who is over 40 years old to learn spoken English

35.The author wrote this passage to _____________.

  1. introduce Chow’s way to success
  2. praise Chow for his excellent performance
  3. call on people to learn from Chow

第二节:(七选五)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

How much of your stress, disappointment, anger or worry comes from one little thing? Almost all of it comes from your expectations(期望), and from wishing things were different. We build these expectations in our heads of what other people should do, what our lives should be like ... 36 And when reality doesn’t meet our fantasy (想像), we wish the world were different.

Here’s a simple solution: Picture all the expectations you have for yourself, your life, your kids, your job and the world. 37 A river or lake will also do. What happens to them? They’re carried around by waves. They float away. Let them be washed away by the clean waters, and let them go. Now live your life without them.

38 It means you accept reality as it is, and people as they are. Without expectations, you see things as they are. 39 Or if you are, you accept it, and then let it go.

That’s not to say you never act. You can act in a way that agrees with your values, but never have an expectation of how the world will react to your actions. 40 Do good because you love doing good, and expect nothing beyond that.

Let the waters of the world clean us, and let us walk lightly in a world that is wonderful without our fantasies.

  1. And yet it’s not real; it’s all fantasy.
  2. What’s a life without expectations like?
  3. Don’t beat yourself up if you have expectations.
  4. If you do something good, you won’t expect praise.
  5. Take them from you, and throw them into the ocean.
  6. When things don’t turn out as we expect, we’ll get angry.
  7. It’s a life where you don’t need to be disappointed or angry.

    IV.语法填空:(满分15分,每小题1.5分)
    阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容或括号内单词的正确形式。
Were you the first or the last child in your family? Or were you a middle or an only child? Some people think 61 matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideas about what birth order means. Some people say that oldest children, 62are smart and strong-willed(意志坚强的), are very likely 63(succeed). The reason 64 this is simple. Parents have a lot of time for their first child and give him or her a lot of attention. An only child will succeed for 65 same reason.
What happens to the 66 children in the family? Middle children don’t get so much attention, so they don’t feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child, 67, often gets special treatment. Often this child grows up to be funny. But a recent study saw things quite 68(difference). The study found that first children believed in family rules. They didn’t take many chances in 69 lives. They usually 70(follow) orders. Rules didn’t mean as much to later children in the family. They took chances and they often did better in life.

Dear John,

I am glad to hear that you are going to travel. Now I’d like to share my view on traveling with you.

In my opinion, traveling is a very good activity. When you get tired with your work or study and when you have free time, you can go out to enjoy the beauty of nature .You can breathe the fresh air, meet different people and make friends with them. Only by relaxing yourself will you forget your tiredness and build your health.

In order to have a pleasant journey, you need to make full preparations ahead of time. You’d better have clear information about the weather, and bring proper clothes, a camera, some medicine for common injuries or diseases and so on. On your journey, you must pay attention to what you eat. Be careful with everything everywhere in case your money gets stolen.

Do you agree with me? Wish you a good journey.

Yours,

Linda
