Do other countries’ students also have so much homework? What do they usually do in their free time? You may feel curious about them.

On April 8, a report came out on the lives of high school students in China, Japan, South Korea and the US. It surveyed around 6,200 students from the four countries last year. You will find the answers to many of your questions in this report.

Who studies hardest?

Chinese students spend the most time studying. Nearly half of Chinese students spend more than two hours on their homework every day. That’s much more than the students of the US (26.4%), Japan (8.2%) and South Korea (5.2%).

Japanese students fall asleep in class most often. About 45% of them said they sometimes doze off in class. In South Korea, it’s 32%; in the US, 21%; and 5% in China.

South Korean students don’t like taking notes. About 70% said they write down what the teacher says in class, many fewer than in Japan (93%), China (90%) and the US (89%).

Who is the most distracted(走神)?

American students are the most active in class, but also the most distracted: 64.2% said they chat with friends in class; 46.9% said they eat snacks in class; and 38.9% said they send e-mails or read unrelated books in class.

What do they do after school?

In their spare time, most Chinese students study or surf the Internet. Most American students hang out with their friends. Most Japanese students do physical exercise. Most Korean students watch TV.

Last week I visited my friend Pete in the new home where he lives with his wife and daughter. Pete used to spend his holidays travelling around the world, visiting the pyramids in Egypt or scuba diving (潜水) in the Caribbean. Nowadays he prefers to spend his holidays and weekends making his house look more beautiful. Like hundreds of thousands of other British people, he has discovered the joy of DIY (Do It Yourself), which means if there are any things that need fixing around the house, he will try to do the job himself.

As he showed me the new kitchen he put together by himself and the newly painted walls, I asked Pete where he got his inspiration (灵感) from. He told me that his favorite source of ideas was a DIY program on TV.

This got me thinking about the great popularity of DIY programs in the UK. Each major channel(频道) has at least one home or garden improving show and there’s even a satellite channel completely about the subject.

I guess it is not really surprising that DIY programs are so popular. Two common sayings in Britain- ‘an Englishman’s home is his castle’ and ‘there’s no place like home’-show how important our houses are to us. With the present economic downturn, many people can’t afford to buy a bigger house so they are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. DIY is the perfect choice.

But be careful! I read a report that said over 230,000 people were injured while doing home improvements in the UK in just one year, including 41,000 who fell off ladders (梯子) and 5,800 who were seriously hurt by hammers(锤子). So I won’t be going down to the hardware store.

24. How did Pete spend his holiday in the past?$来&源:

A. Visiting his friends. B. Diving.

C. Travelling around the world. D. Making his house beautiful.

25. Which might NOT be shown in a DIY program on TV?

A. Scuba diving

B. A garden improving feature (特别节目).

C. Home improvements.

D. Fixing things in kitchens

26. Which is NOT the reason why DIY is popular among British people?

A. They enjoy DIY.

B. They want to make their houses better themselves.

C. They can improve their houses without spending much money.

D. They want to be on TV.

27. At the end of the article the writer wants us to remember _____.

A. not to go to the hardware store

B. to be careful not to get hurt while doing DIY

C. to keep watching DIY on TV while drinking a nice cup of tea

D. not to climb ladders or use hammers

C

Attitude is one of the most important factors in determining success for all people. Successful people have one thing in common—an expectant (期待的) attitude of success. Most people begin each morning in neutral and react to events of the day. You can be one of the successful people in life by starting each day with a positive attitude, a gratitude for the opportunities you have, and an expectancy of the best for yourself.

People tend to live up to expectations. We get out of life just about what we put into it. Our environment becomes a mirror of our spirit, our attitude, and expectations. If we set a great goal, we get great results. If we have a fair goal, we accomplish fair results, and if we have a poor goal, we accomplish poor results. The world will give you back what you expect, so expect the very best. Don't be defensive or doubtful. Nothing changes unless you do. Before you can do something, you've got to be something. Know that you have worth and value. Show that to the world.

Treat everyone you come in contact with as the most important person in life. It will build self-esteem(自尊心). Smile! You'll be rewarded with a returned smile. Don't react to others rudely. Forgive everyone who ever hurt you. Then, forgive yourself. Keep yourself healthy. Exercise. Eat a proper diet. Display an attitude of confidence.

Develop these good habits and your expectancy will be rewarded by successes. This attitude will put you into that group of people who are truly successful, because you will know and understand how an expectant attitude enhances(提高)every aspect of your life.

28. According to the author, we are likely to achieve success if we____.

A. hold on to our dreams B. take a positive attitude

C. have a good opportunityD. show gratitude every day

29. We learn from Paragraph 2 that____.

A. the greater our goal, the better results we will get

A. building self-esteem is important B. we should treat everyone else fairly

C. it makes good sense to forgive others D. if treated kindly, others are friendly

31. The author's purpose of writing the text is to____.

A. stress the importance of positive attitude B. offer advice on confidence building

C. suggest some ways to acquire success D. share his view point about life

D

Thanksgiving Day is a special holiday in the United States and Canada. Families and friends gather to eat and give thanks for their blessing.

Thanksgiving Day is really a harvest festival. This is why it is celebrated in late fall, after the crops are in. But one of the first thanksgivings in America had nothing to do with a good harvest. On December 4, 1619, the Pilgrims (圣地朝拜者) from England landed near what is now Charles City, Virginia. They knelt down and thanked God for their safe journey across the Atlantic.

The first New England Thanksgiving did celebrate a rich harvest. The Pilgrims landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620. They had a difficult time and the first winter was cruel(残酷的). Many of the Pilgrims died. But the next year, they had a good harvest. So Governor Bradford declared a three-day feast (盛宴). The Pilgrims invited Indian friends to join them for their special feast. Everyone brought food.

In time, other colonies(殖民地)began to celebrate a day of thanksgiving. But it took years before there was a national Thanksgiving Day. During the Civil War, Sarah Josepha Hale persuaded Abraham Lincoln to do something about it. He proclaimed (宣布) the last Thursday of November 1863 as a day of thanksgiving. Today, Americans celebrate this happy harvest festival on the fourth Thursday in November. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving Day in much the same way as their American neighbors. But the Canadian thanks-giving Day falls on the second Monday in October.

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job.    36

So, you have to give a speech and you are terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank Goodness, it’s over. I’m just not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.”
Cheer up! 37   Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of your time doing your research. Then spend plenty of your time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they help you make your points more clearly.   38   Don’t talk over their heads, and don’t talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief.  39   And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience.
If you follow these simple steps, you will see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You’re not convinced yet?   40  资*源%库

书面表达

Nowadays, a growing number of people, especially young people, prefer ordering meals online or calling the take-out restaurant for meals to cooking in person. The reasons are so follows.

It’s not surprising for them to do so. In the first place, as the pace of modern life is becoming faster and faster, people have less time to even cook one meal for themselves. What is more, the development of technology offers the smart phones and Internet more powerful functions, which leads to the increase of take-out service. Last but not least, all the people may not have an ability to cook, and sometimes the meals they cook are not as delicious as they buy.

In my view, our health is closely related to what we eat. The busier we are, the more attention we should pay to food. Therefore, I prefer to cook food at home and go on a balanced diet. (or: From my perspective, there is no denying that ordering meals has a pile of advantages. Not only does it save our time, but also make our life more convenient. So I have a preference for ordering meals online.)
