In this digital age, we search almost everything online before we decide what to do. According to a US-based business reviewing website, the top searches at different times of the night in different European countries vary a lot. Below are some of the more interesting findings. Take a look.

Italy: While most Europeans are searching for restaurants or bars around 6 p.m., the Italians are searching for messages, shoes and job agencies.

Germany:Coming from perhaps the most organized and efficient country, the average German is attracted to food and drink. Having looked up restaurants and bars earlier in the evening, they have already been searching for breakfast and brunch by 9 p.m.

UK: Karaoke is one of the most popular pastimes in Asia, but in Europe, the UK seems to be the only nation to look first for Karaoke bars in its Internet searches, roughly around 9 p.m. Later into the night, Britons are going to 24-hour pharmacies (药房)by 10 p.m., and then there is a steady interest in 24-hour food stores and delivery, until 1 a.m.

France:The French call it a day online quite early, at about 10 p.m. But they don't do it until they've had a chance to put their dancing shoes on, after searching for “night club” and “dance”.

Spain: The Spanish seem to be quite practical. They search for elementary schools and dermatology(皮肤科) at 10 p.m., followed by swimming lessons at midnight.

21. A man searching for education information online often probably comes from ________.

A. Spain B. UK C. France D. Germany

22. We can learn from the text that ________.

A. the Italians don't like restaurants or bars

B. UK is considered the most organized country

C. Asian people often look for Karaoke first online

D. usually French people end their online search early

23. In which section of a magazine does this text probably come from?

A. Opinion. B. Lifestyle. C. Food. D. Technology.

B

“Dad,” I say one day, “let's take a trip. Why don't you fly out and meet me?”

My father had just retired after 27 years as a manager for IBM. His job filled his day, his thought, his life. While he woke up and took a warm shower, I screamed under a freezing waterfall in Peru. While he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks.

My father sees me drifting aimlessly, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wants me to settle down, but now I want him to find an adventure.

He agrees to travel with me through the national parks. We meet four weeks later in Rapid City.

“What is our first stop?” asks my father.

“What time is it?”

“Still don't have a watch?”

Less than an hour away is Mount Rushmore. As he stares up at the four Presidents carved in granite(花岗岩), his mouth and eyes open slowly, like those of a little boy.

“Unbelievable,” he says, “How was this done?”

A film in the information center shows sculptor Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to the sculpture and then left the final touches to his son.

We stare up and I ask myself, “Would I ever devote my life to anything?”

No directions, no goals. I always used to hear those words in my father's voice. Now I hear them in my own.

The next day we're at Yellowstone National Park, where we have a picnic.

“Did you ever travel with your dad?” I ask.

“Only once,” he says. “I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other—but never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave.”

The_last_sentence—it's_probably_the_same_thing_I'd_say_about_my_father._And_what_I'd_want_my_child_to_say_about_me.

In Glacier National Park, my father says, “I've never seen water so blue.” I have, in several places of the world. I can keep traveling, I realize—and maybe a regular job won't be as dull as I feared.

Weeks after our trip, I call my father.

“The photos from the trip are wonderful,” he says. “We have got to take another trip like that sometime.”

I tell him I've decided to settle down, and I'm wearing a watch.

24. We can learn from Paragraphs 2 and 3 that the father ________.

A. followed the fashion

B. got bored with his job

C. was unhappy with the author's lifestyle

D. liked the author's collection of stamps

25. What does the author realize at Mount Rushmore?

A. His father is interested in sculpture.

B. His father is as innocent as a little boy.

C. He should learn sculpture in the future.

D. He should pursue a specific aim in life.

26. What could be inferred about the author and his father from the end of the story?

A. They begin to change their attitudes to life.

B. The Swiss watch has drawn them closer.

C. They decide to learn photography together.

D. The call solves their disagreements.

27. From the underlined paragraph, we can see that the author________.

A. wants his children to learn from their grandfather

B. comes to understand what parental love means

C. learns how to communicate with his father

D. hopes to give whatever he can to his father

C

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?

UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined.

Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the_opposite_is_true:_trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”.

Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.

Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.

“We didn't take any notice of it,” Simard says sadly. “Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.

28. The underlined sentence “the opposite is true” in Paragraph 3 probably means that trees ________.

A. compete for survival

B. protect their own wealth

C. depend on each other

D. provide support for dying trees

29. “Mother trees” are extremely important because they________.

A. pass on nutrition to young trees

B. seem more likely to be cut down by humans

C. look the largest in size in the forest

D. know more about the complex “tree societies”

30. The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to ________.

A. how young trees survive

B. how trees grow old

C. how forestry industry develops

D. how “tree societies” work

31. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Old Trees Communicate Like Humans

B. Young Trees Are in Need of Protection

C. Trees Are More Awesome Than You Think

D. Trees Contribute to Our Society

How to Make Wise Decisions

We make decisions every day; everything we say and do is the result of a decision. __36__ However, there are some steps you can follow.

●List your options(选择).It may appear that there is only one course of action, but that is not necessarily true. No matter how limited your situation seems, try to make a list of options. Brainstorm, and write down every idea that comes to your mind, as crazy as it may seem. You can always cross it off the list later, but crazy ideas can bring creative solutions. Once you have your list, ask others for suggestions. __37__

●Weigh the possible results. For every option, list every possible result, and label(标签) it as positive or negative. __38__ You can put a plus sign next to each positive result and a minus sign next to each negative one. Give two pluses or minuses to the best and the worst.

●__39__ This is the hardest step, but there will hopefully be a decision on your list that is supported by both logic and intuition(直觉). If you still can't decide, ask for advice from people you trust. If need be, let them be the tie-breakers—it's better than flipping(掷) a coin.

●Once you have made a decision, carry it out wholeheartedly. At this stage, don't let yourself be confused by thinking about all the choices you didn't pick.

In the end, remember to evaluate (评估)your decision afterward.__40__ By drawing wisdom from every decision you make, you can ensure that every choice has at least one positive result.

A. Make a choice.

B. Think about who is affected.

C. There is a simple way to do this.

D. You should hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

E. There are no easy formulas (公式)for making the right decision.

F. Sometimes they can offer the most creative ideas.

G. If you don't evaluate your decision afterward, you won't learn anything from it.

Dear Peter,

I have read your post and I am quite interested in it. Now I'm putting forward my idea about clothes suitable for people to wear in the future.

The clothes should look cool with their multifunctions. They are made from special high-tech materials, which can make them easy to wash. Besides, the clothes' temperature and humidity can agree with the changing environment. In this way, people can feel cool in summer and warm in winter. What's more, magic is that they can even change the color into whatever you like. Last but not least, they can play music and produce a pleasant smell to help people work and sleep more soundly. I strongly believe that this new kind of clothes will be popular in the future.

I hope you like my idea.

W: Oh, it's San Chong Men written by Han Han.

M: San Chong Men? I've heard of that book. It's said to be a huge success among young readers.

W: Yes, indeed. This is the third time that I have read it.

M: It sounds interesting. I must read it one day.

W: It's certainly worth reading. I'm going to the bookshop to look for more of his works tomorrow. Would you like to come with me to buy one?

M: Yes, I'd like to. I can read it on the train to Beijing the day after tomorrow.

W: Summer vacation is coming and it will last for two full months. Where are you going to go?

M: I haven't decided where to go yet. What about you?

W: I'm going to Yangshuo in Guangxi province with my parents to spend the first month of the vacation there.

M: Why do you want to go there?

W: Well, as we all know, Yangshuo is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I can try some local dishes and enjoy the comfortable climate there. And the natural scenery attracts me the most.

M: Wow! That sounds great!

W: Why not come with us?

M: Well, I'd like to, but I have an appointment with my friends. They are talking about going to several different places, such as Lijiang, Wuyuan and so on.

W: Where do you want to go?

M: I am dreaming of going to Lijiang, but I don't know if everyone will agree to go there.

My cat is a grey Egyptian beauty with yellow eyes and her name is Squash. She is often unhappy when I leave, and she always misses me when I am away. One day, I was away at school, and Squash was in my bedroom. She came out of the bedroom meowing and was walking down the hall with my shirt in her mouth to go into the living room. So my mum took a picture of her! It was so funny!

Another funny thing happened one month ago. Well, she loves my computer and she loves drinking milk. That day she jumped onto my desk because she thought I had a glass of milk. However, I had a glass of tea and she spilled it on herself. She sat on the computer until she was dry. I got mad and shouted at her, but she gave me a “You did it—I didn't!” look. She is really a naughty, but lovely cat! Next month is her third birthday, and I think some fish would be the best present for her.
