Hank Viscardi was born without legs. He had no legs but stumps that could be fitted with a kind of special boots. People stared at him with cruel interest. Children laughed at him and called him “Ape Man” Because his arm practically dragged on the ground.

Hank went to school like other boys. His grades were good and he needed only eight years to finish his schooling instead of the usual twelve. After graduating from school, he worked his way through college. He swept floors, waited on table, or worked in one of the college offices. Most, if not all of us, can’t go a single day without using technology. Our lives are filled with not only the obvious things, like computers, cell phones, and DVDs, but also with everyday items we now take for granted. Things such as beds, and tables, and even the lowly pencils we tend to ignore fairly often.once, however, those lowly pencils were considered an amazing invention.

In ancient times, scribes(抄写员) didn’t have any pencils. They wrote using an instrument called a stylus. A stylus was a thin metal rod which left a light, but readable mark on papyrus, an early form of paper. Writing technology advanced a huge step in 1564 when graphite (石墨) was discovered in England. At the beginning graphite sticks were wrapped in string. Later on, the graphite was placed into wooden sticks. In 1662 Germany started mass producing pencils, and in 1812 almost two centuries later the US production began.

Learn some interesting facts about pencils that you just might not know.

- You can write underwater with a pencil.

- The major part of European pencils didn’t carry erasers.

- your average pencil will draw a line 35 miles long.

D

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school i have ever taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling.

If spelling becomes the only focal point of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.

I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience. “This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is terrible.” It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil’s technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad refection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child’s deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centered on the child’s ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement.

52.Teachers are different in their opinions about _____.

  1. The difficulties in teaching spelling
  2. The role of spelling in general language development
  3. The complexities of the basic writing skills
  4. The necessity of teaching spelling

53.The underlined expression “play safe”probably means “_______”.

  1. To write carefully
  2. To do as teachers say
  3. To use dictionaries frequently
  4. To avoid using words one is not sure of

54.Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that ______.

  1. Students will be able to express their ideas more freely
  2. Students will have more confidence in writing
  3. Teachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakes
  4. Students will learn to be independent of teachers

55.The major point discussed in the passage is ______

  1. The importance of developing writing skills
  2. The complexities of spelling
  3. The correct way of marking compositions
  4. The relationship between spelling and the content of a composition
