    A
An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile items, like those made of glass should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire breakouts during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases at all times.
If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.
If trapped in debris(瓦砾堆), cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you. Use a whistle (哨子) if one is available. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust. Do not light a match because you may burn yourself. Do not move about or kick up dust.

Butterflies can seem friendly and harmless. But at least one type has learned to raise its youngbytricking(欺骗) ants into feeding it and giving special treatment, British researchers report in this weeks Science.
The pupae (蛹) of the Rebels Large give off a smell that imitates (模仿) the ants and make themselves at home inside the ant nest. Once they become a caterpillar (幼虫) they even beg for food like young ants, a team including Oxfords Jeremy Thomas say. But, not satisfied just to be fed, the butterflies even manage to demand special treatment. It turns out that queen ants make sounds that signal their special position to worker ants. The caterpillars have learned to imitate those sounds, gaining position high enough to be rescued before others if the nest is attacked.
The original idea came to Jeremy some 15 years ago when he was recording the sounds of worker ants. He realized that sometimes worker ants treated the caterpillars of the Rebels Large Blue like queen ants when the caterpillars make chemical and behavioral (行为的) signals just like those of the advanced enough to prove whether or not the idea was correct.
In an experiment, the team recorded and then played back the sounds made by queen ants to worker ants in a nest. Jeremy said, When we played the queen sounds, they would stand still with their antennae (触角) held out and their jaws (下颌) apart for hours --- the moment anyone goes near they will attack. In short, the right sound signals cause worker ants to protect and care for a caterpillar pretending to be their queen.
Such a discovery is especially important because the Rebels Large Blue is an endangered species.
28.The best title for the passage could be ______.
        A. A New Kind of Butterfly Discovered
        B. How Ants Communicate with Each Other
        C. How Butterflies Raise Their Young

    29. Worker ants will protect the butterflys caterpillar when it ______.
    1. stands still with its mouth open
    2. begs some of the worker ants
    3. gives signals like the queen ant
    4. acts just like a worker ant

30. According to the passage, butterflies trick worker ants mainly through ______.

  1. sounds and movements
  2. smells and touches
  3. chemicals and movements
  4. sounds and smells

31. What is the major importance of the discovery?

  1. It may help protect a type of butterfly.
  2. It will be used in communication technology.
  3. It finds out how ants care for their queens.
  4. It provides a new way to keep ants away.

For twenty years, I saved all my college course notes and textbooks: that's a lot of paper.

Worse, it's not easy to carry them around — and trust me, they aren't light — on at least seven moves. Yet I never once looked at them. They sat in our basement, covered in a thick layer of dust. If books and papers could wonder, they'd wonder why they were still under our stairs after all those years. When would the Big Day come?

Well, the Big Day eventually did arrive; only it was different than expected. My wife, always more accepting changes than I am, finally talked me into clearing out the entire mess.

The pain I experienced was also unexpected. What hurt me was to come across those terrible papers I'd written, which reminded me of my poor study habits, and an embarrassing lack of comprehension. It was great to get rid of them. But it was also a clearing of personal history.

At first, I struggled with this. The truth was in the record that my books, my notes, and my papers were primary source materials, recording an important time in my life. To clear them out was to clear out the truth.

What I've learned since taking this leap is that the process is more important than the truth. I feel as if much of my real education during my college years isn't in the documents but now in me.

So I am glad to free myself of this physical burden. And what's better is that I don't need to look back to those painful moments. They belong to the past.

You might want to consider doing something similar, either under the stairs of your basement or in your mind.

What is the personal rubbish piling in your life? Clear it out and make your life awesome.

32.Why was the author finally determined to desert all the college materials?

A.Because his wife persuaded him to.

B.Because they were of no use at all.

C.Because they were heavy on the moves.

D.Because they occupied space too long.

33.The author didnt want to throw away the old materials from college because________.

  1. they were worth a lot of money

B. they reminded him of his bad study habits

C. they were still useful for life

D. they were his personal history

34.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

  1. The past experiences.B.The wasted collegerelated materials.

C.The rubbish in the basement.D.Physical and mentalmess.

35.What would be the best title for the passage?

  1. Let It Go B.Sort It Out

C.Give up the Past D.Forget the History
