When my husband walks in the door after working late, his first words to me are “Thank you.” He’s thanking me for taking care of the kids. He usually follows it up with “I’m sorry ” for having worked late, even though it was not his choice.

Those words express his respect and admiration for the work I am doing at home with our three children. I’m sure he is tired from a long day at work, but he knows I am physically and emotionally exhausted as well from a long day at home. He may not spend as much time caretaking as I do, but he’s done enough to know what I’m going through every day.

When our children were babies, he would do late-night and early-morning feeding whenever possible. “I would like to do it.” He wanted to help me and spend time with our children. Now that our kids are little older (2, 5 and 10 years), he’s still a hands-on father. He does not shy away from any tasks of parenting.

He’s lucky to have a job that’s allowed him to marry his passion for art with earning money to support a family. His job has allowed me to be home for a total of almost a decade so far. Money is necessary and important ----- I cannot deny that fact. But his attitude reflects that raising our children is the most important job.

I know my husband’s attitude and actions will stay with my kids, because it stayed with my husband from his own childhood. His dad always respected and valued his mother’s contribution, so my husband viewed childcare as an important job in itself.

My husband is certainly not perfect, but he’s pretty extraordinary in his recognition of the value of parenting. He gives everything he has to them---- every ounce of energy, attention, patience and love that he has within. I am blessed to have a considerate husband.

24. What is probably the author’s husband’s job?

  1. A doctor B. A driver C. A painter D. A policeman

25. How many years has the author been a full-time mother?

  1. Almost five years B. Almost seven years C. Almost ten years D. Almost twelve years

26. The author’s husband’s attitude towards childcare is influenced by _________.

  1. his father B. his teacher C. his friends D. his boss

27. How does the author feel about his husband?

  1. Annoyed B. Grateful C. Disappointed D. Puzzled

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recently surprised Chinese students when he spoke to them in Chinese. In a speech at Tsinghua University in Beijing, Zuckerberg spoke Chinese for about 30 minutes. With Chinese having the most native speakers in the world and the study of the Chinese language increasing rapidly around the world, Zucherberg’s talk raises a question: Is Chinese the language of the future? Could it replace English as the world’s international language?

Chinese will grow in importance, especially for people who want to work and do business in China. But I don’t think Chinese will replace English any time soon.

American movies, music, television, video games have wider audiences, which is one reason for English’s popularity as a foreign language. So far China’s success in this aspect has been very limited. Chinese films, Chinese television shows and Chinese music don’t have a huge following outside of China. In addition, English is seen as a more neutral (中立的) language than Chinese. Unlike Chinese, English is not associated with one country. It is a universal language and is spoken in more than 170 countries. In 2014, China hosted the Asia—Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Beijing, China. But the meeting was not in Chinese. The official language of APEC is English.

The most important reason is that Chinese is a more difficult language to learn. It is estimated that it would take a native English speaker 2,000 hours to reach professional fluency in Chinese. That is four times longer than it would take to reach the same level in Dutch, French, or Spanish. While Chinese grammar is much simpler, Chinese has a tone and writing system that is more difficult for adult learners to master.

Last but not least, more people learn English than Chinese. A recent survey by Gallup showed that only one in four Americans is multilingual, which means only 25% of Americans can speak a foreign language besides English. For most Americans, learning a foreign language is a choice, not a necessity. China Daily estimates that 400 million Chinese are studying English. That means China has more English learners than the U.S has English speakers.

28. Mark Zuckerburg surprised Chinese students by _____________.

  1. singing Chinese songs B. wearing Chinese clothes

C. making a speech in Chinese D. speaking highly of Chinese

29. Which of the following contributes to English’s popularity as a foreign language?

  1. American growing economy B. American pop culture
    C. American freedom of speech D. American education system
    30. The underlined word “multilingual” means __________________.
    1. able to afford a foreign trip B. able to speak more than one language
      C. able to take on more than one task D. able to speak Chinese and English
      31. What is the text mainly about?
      A. The results pop culture development brings about.
      B. The influence English has on the global economy.
      C. The suggestions on how to master Chinese in a short time.
      D. The reason why English would be more popular than Chinese.
      D
Over the past few years, there has been a big increase in the number of people sharing information online. Sharing information online has become a routine for many of us, but have you ever given a thought as to why we will involve ourselves into this activity?
We often share information with our friends in office or at home to educate, entertain, or pleasantly surprise them. In this way we can be connected with others. A lot of people share information online to present their true image to the outside world. Some people, especially those who feel shy and uncomfortable to talk about their areas of interest in the presence of others, find it extremely convenient to share that information online with like-minded individuals
78% of the respondents in the study of TheNew York Times said they shared information online because it helped them develop better relationships. Today, a lot of people do not have the time to meet each other in person, and the Internet has become a great substitute. A lot of people now meet each other online, rather than in conventional places like restaurants and pubs.
Lastly, when we share our thoughts online, we are actively involving ourselves in the vast community of people who are a part of the World Wide Web. Sharing information will make a difference to the viewpoint of others, or add to their understanding about the world. In the study of The New York Times, 89% of the respondents said that feeling satisfied with what they have done, they enjoyed sharing to get more involved in the world.
      32. What attitude do most people take when sharing information online?
      A. Responsible B. Critical C. Self-centered D. Negative
      33. Which of the following may lead to people’s sharing information on line?
      A. Young age B. Unsuccessful career C. Shy personality D. Broken marriage

With the winter holiday just around the corner, it seems like everybody is busy planning their vacations. Here are some tips that can help you enjoy your holiday without emptying your pocket :

Travel off-season

Go to your desired destination while the demand is low and take advantage of huge discounts. During the peak season, the hotel and flight prices increase quickly, and you’ll likely spend more of your vacation time standing in line due to the rush of tourists. 36.

37

Websites can help you find discount hotel rooms. Look for places that do not charge extra for children if they use the existing bedding. Stay with the locals. If you and your family are going to stay for a longer period, renting a small apartment is a good choice.

Eat like a local

Why eat at big restaurants when you can experience something new? 38. During your family trip, try new food where the locals eat. This will not just save money, but also provide you with a new and different experience. For smaller meals and snacks, avoid restaurants and try street food or other takeout.

Dont hesitate to bargain

Tourist-heavy places are known for overcharging for just about everything. Clothes, travel goodies, souvenirs, etc. are very expensive at these places. 39 Bargain hard to get the best price.

Choose local transportation

40 Instead, take buses, railways or subways, which are always cheaper. If you are planning to stay for a while, you can consider renting a car. Hiring a car is much easier than carrying your bags everywhere if you are moving around a lot.

  1. Save on hotels.
  2. Surf the Internet while traveling.
  3. Therefore, avoid buying anything there.
  4. So it’s best to find out when the off---season starts.
  5. Planning your meals is another way to reduce your travel costs.
  6. For this reason, you shouldn’t feel ashamed to ask for bargains.
  7. As a tourist, avoid taking taxis whenever possible, since they are expensive.

Dear Mark,

I know from your e-mail that you are learning Chinese this semester and ask me for some advice. Here are my suggestions.

First, you should listen attentively to your teachers in class and practice as often as possible after class because practice makes perfect. Second, I’d like to recommend you to read some Chinese story books, which helps you enlarge your vocabulary and understand the different meanings of the words. Third, I think it is a good idea to communicate with native speakers. Meanwhile, watching Chinese movies and listening to Chinese songs are also good ways to improve your Chinese.

I hope my advice will be helpful.

Yours

Li Hua
