Apollo Robbins is a pickpocket(扒手), but he is not a normal pickpocket. He is an entertainer. Hundreds of people enjoy watching Robbins perform in shows.
Robbins began learning these skills at a very young age. His two older brothers taught him basic pick pocketing tricks. And Robbins quickly became very good stealing.
Robbins was naturally good at pick pocketing. But it took years to develop his ability to perform for other people. When he was 15, he started studying magic. As he learned about magic, he was less interested in stealing.
After seven years, he began to perform in his own shows. He now performs at events and meetings around the United States. Many magicians agree that Robbins is the best at what he does. His tricks surprise even experienced magicians!
Robbins has also worked with the scientists at Yale University in the United States. He would show his different methods of movements to people while the scientist watched how their eyes moved. They were interested in what people concentrated on. They discovered that different people reacted in the same ways.
This work is helping the scientists understand attention and human nature. Knowing how human attention works is important. It can help officials create better driving laws and road signs. It can help companies create telephones that are easier to use. It can even help office workers to manage their time better. More importantly, it can help people know how to protect themselves from pickpockets!
For Robbins, understanding human attention makes him a better magician. While performing his tricks, he can tell the crowd how he uses a person’s attention to his advantage. “A lot of magic is designed to look very beautiful. But I am trying to affect people’s minds, emotions, and ideas. My goal is not to hurt or trick them. I want to challenge the ideas they have about what is real,” he said.

The college selection process is tough enough. Don’t let the myths(谣言) about college frighten you away from a college or university that might be just right for you. Year after year students settle for a second and third choice college because they listened to the half-truths for false descriptions concerning the college selection process. We want to explode these myths so you can choose the college or university that is best for you.

MYTH 1: I need to decide on my career before I can choose a college.

College is a time to explore. Except in a few specific cases, you can choose a major in your second year and still complete the degree in four years. A surprising number of students discover the field for them while taking a course they didn’t expect to like. Don’t let well-meaning friends pressure you into deciding on a major field or a career at this time. Take your time.

MYTH 2: A lot of out-of-class activities will make up for poor grades.

Admittedly, colleges consider out-of-class activities when they review an application. But colleges look at your academic performance first. Lots of out-of-class activities help only if the college already believes you can do the work. “the thicker the papers, the stupider the child” is an expression admissions counselors (招生顾问) use when a promising student submits materials on all that they have done, but they have poor high school grades.

MYTH3: Colleges are only concerned with my academic development.

Many colleges and smaller universities pride themselves on their ability to “develop the whole person”. Some of this personal development comes from requiring a broad-based general education that contributes to your understanding of the world and our society. In some cases, personal and professional development is intentional. At these colleges, there are workshops (研讨会)open to students on time management, developing relationships, handling yourself at a job interview and your responsibilities as a citizen.

25. As for choosing the major, you should ______.

A. explore it for yourself

B. take your friends’ advice

C. choose it in the first year of college

D. decide on it before going to college

广东省东莞市松山湖莞美学校2014-2015学年高二下学期第一次月考英语试卷(无答案)

27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Students must take part in workshops in college.

B. Colleges mainly develop students’ academic ability.

C. Most students mainly develop professional skills in college.

D. Colleges attach importance to students’ all-round development.

Michael Guerreri wanted to try human growth hormones (激素) so he could look like a great wrestler (摔跤手). Joe Badalanato hoped HGH would help him become a better football player. James O’Brien figured the drug would improve his fastball.

The three 18-year-olds from Philadelphia said that they bought bottles of HGH online in the past year. Turns out, what they bought was not the real thing.

Their experiences are part of a growing trend. A national study, published Wednesday by the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, finds in 2013, 11% of 3,705 American high school students reported using human growth hormones at least once, without doctors’ permission. That’s a jump form 2011 and 2012 when the number of teens using the drug was 5%.

Many products claiming (声称) to be human growth hormones are widely available on the internet. But getting real HGH—which can cost up to $1,000 for a monthly supply—isn’t that simple.

Dr. John Kolonich, a chiropractor (按摩师) in Franklinville, New Jersey, said real HGH is only injectable and also noted it is very expensive. “HGH” is not the drug of choice for a high school kid who wants to play better,” he warned.

Steve Saunders, CEO of Power Train Sports Institute, trains thousands of high school and college athletes. “We tell all our athletes they can’t use chemicals to replace hard work and a proper nutrition plan,” Saunders said.

Parents are partly responsible for the increase of the trend. Frank Trumbetti, owner of Rock Bottom Nutrition and Fitness Center in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, said not only teens but also parents ask him about HGH every day. He said he threatened to call child protection services on a dad who wanted to put his 14-year-old son on human growth hormones.

“That’s just one example,” Trumbetti said. “You have some moms and dads that are afraid to have their kids take just protein powder (蛋白粉)(which is commonly used by those involved in bodybuilding and athletics). And then you have parents that are encouraging their kids to use performance-improving drugs like HGH because they think they’ll help the kid get a college scholarship.”

28. What can we infer about the three teens from Philadelphia?

A. They all were cheated.

B. They all achieved their aims.

C. They all benefited from HGH.

D. They all enjoyed their experiences.

29. What do we learn from the national study?

A. Most doctors are against using HGH.

B. It is easy for US students to get real HGH.

C. High school students are fond of online shopping.

D. The use of HGH among US teens is on the increase.

30. What is Steve Saunders’s attitude toward athletes using HGH?

A. Curious B. Unfavorable

C. Skeptical D. Uncaring

31. Frank Trumbetti provided an example of a dad who ______.

A. often called child protection service

B. forbade his kid to take protein powder

C. had no interest in bodybuilding and athletics

D. asked his kid to take performance-improving drugs

D

On an elementary school playground, hundreds of children run and jump, smiling and laughing as they play. Watching sea otters (海獭) playing in their own environment is like watching children at play. Sea otters, which are presently on the endangered species list, are a joy to watch and, fortunately, are experiencing an increase in population.

Groups of sea otters live on the shores of the North Pacific Ocean. They are seldom found far from land but spend almost their entire lives at sea. The otter has been known to dive as deep as 180 feet and stay underwater as long as four minutes. Each day the sea otter eats as much as one-fifth of its body weight in fish or shellfish.

Not only are sea otters playful, they are also amazingly resourceful. Their favorite food, abalone(鲍鱼), is protected by a thick shell sea otters are unable to break with their teeth. Sea otters use stones from the ocean floor and break the abalone open on their bellies(肚子) as they move slowly across the surface of the water on their backs, a behavior that makes them one of only a few animals on Earth, including human beings, to use tools! Their intelligence is also displayed while sleeping, in order not to move into dangerous waters, sea otters actually cover themselves with plants in the sea, which keep them in place before falling asleep.

Because sea otters have a special means of keeping insulated (隔热的), they can keep their body heat in their cold environment. They have unbelievably fine fur that traps tiny air bubbles, and that keeps them comfortable when warmed by body heat, however, their fur loses this insulating quality if it becomes dirty.

Sea otters have faced dangers from hunters in the past and from oil spills more recently. Fortunately, due to a 1911 agreement and to rescue and habitat protection efforts, the sea otter population has nearly recovered.

32. Paragraph 2 mainly talks about sea otters’ .

A. appearance B. living habits C. economic value D. living environment

33. The underlined word “resourceful” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to .

A. beautiful B. energetic C. careful D. smart

34. What can be inferred about sea otters’ fur?

A. It consists of tiny air bubbles.

B. It has a layer of insulating water bubbles.

C. It keeps sea otters warm only when it’s clean.

D. It becomes dirty easily in the cold environment.

35. We learn from the text that sea otters .

A. mostly stay on the land

B. like sleeping among stones

C. are increasing in population again

D. usually hide themselves under plants in the sea

Life in Death Valley

Death Valley, in southeastern California, is the driest place in North America.36The highest temperature ever recorded in the valley was 134°F, and the temperature routinel reaches 115°F in July. 37This extremely low rainfall is caused by the rain shadow effect.

Sources disagree on the exact size of Death Valley National Park but agree that it is more than 3.3 million acres. The park includes the valley itself and the surrounding mountains. Although the name of the park has the word “death” and it has extremely bad climatic conditions, Death Valley is alive! 38These plants include not only cactus(仙人掌), but also grasses, bushes, and even trees like pine and others. Most of the trees grow in the mountains, where the air is cooler and there is more water.

39Most are active at night. There are scores of bird species, as well as many reptiles and a few amphibians. Snakes, a few kinds of frogs and many others survive here, too. Small mammals, including mice, rats and squirrels, also live in the park. So do larger ones, like foxes, wolves, mountain lions, deer, and sheep. Horses, while not native species, also survive in Death Valley. 40They live in the park’s spring, streams, and ponds.

  1. More than 970 types of plants grow there.
  2. The park is alive with various animals, too.
  3. It’s also one of the hottest places known in the world.
  4. There is an even more surprising fact: there are fish in Death Valley!
  5. The valley is surrounded by mountains, while its surface is mostly flat.
  6. Parts of Death Valley receive fewer than two inches of rain in an entire year.
  7. This is very important in Death Valley as it provides its specific climate and geography.

Last Saturday, we took part in Career Day activities. We had gathered in the library at 9 am. Having read the schedule, we entered the meeting hall. The guest from different businesses were already there waiting for us. They gave us lectures introduce what they did at work, that provided us with some general knowledge about different jobs. After that, we communicate with them face to face. To our delight, they gave us valuable information about what we were interested. Surprisingly, we were also given a chance to experience the work in their guidance. It helped us get a picture of their favorite jobs.

Now I have the clear goal of my future career. I’m sure I will try hardly to achieve it with determination.
