Parents do need to teach their kids financial responsibility and that money is earned. Still, many child-development experts agree that tying a child’s pocket money to chores(琐事)can be a slippery slope. Here’s why.

Susie Walton, master instructor at Peace in Your Home advises to keep chores and pocket money totally separate. “Pocket money is one thing. When it comes to chores, life skills, responsibilities---that’s a whole different thing.” says Walton.

Walton says, “When kids aren’t doing a chore, you don’t say, ‘well, there goes your pocket money.’ You’re going to sit them down and ask what’s going on. ‘We are a team. We are a family. We’ve got to have them done.’”

Besides, by paying children for chores with pocket money, you’ll also be sending the message that work isn’t worth doing unless they’re getting paid for it.

There are times when it would make sense to pay kids for chores. Most financial and child-development experts agree that it’s a fine idea to pay children money for extra jobs that are outside their normal set of chores, such as washing windows, washing the car or helping to clean out the garage—especially if the child is saving for a big item. This may even develop an entrepreneurial(企业家)spirit to think outside of the box to earn money.

For parents who are concerned that their children won’t learn the value of a dollar if the pocket money isn’t tied to household chores, notes that there are still plenty of money management skills to be learned from a straight allowance. Depending on the age, kids can be made responsible for paying for their own toys of snacks. Some parents even require that kids set aside a percentage of their pocket money towards savings.

“I really like having my own money,” says Kevin, 9 “It’s up to me if I want to buy the cheap toy now, or save and get the better toy.” And that’s a good lesson on learn at 9 years old.

No matter which pocket money route you take in parenthood, kids will feel empowered by being able to handle their own money.

24. According to Susie Walton, if kids don’t do chores, parents should _________.

A. teach them the entrepreneurial spirit

B. talk to them about family responsibilities

C. give them a smaller pocket money than usual

D. order them to give reasonable explanation

A. money given by charity organizations

B. money earned by doing part-time jobs

C. money earned by doing everyday household chores

D. money given by parents and not dependent on chores

26. What is the author’s attitude towards Kevin’s action?

A. Worried B. Doubtful C. Approving D. Unfavorable

27. The text is mainly about _________.

A. the importance of kids doing chores

B. whether parents should pay kids for chores

C. whether it is good or bad to give kids pocket money

D. whether parents should give kids regular pocket money

A Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. While you’re sleeping, your brain is forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Although we all know the importance of getting a good night's sleep, not all of us know the best way of getting it. A sleep expert, Phil Atherton, gave some top tips for getting the most out of the night, which will leave you ready for action in the morning.

According to Phil Atherton, not eating a large meal before bedtime is important for getting a good night's sleep. The time difference between eating and sleeping should be at least three hours. So you'd better avoid eating any food three hours before bed, asitwill lower your blood sugar during sleep and help minimize damage from too much sugar floating around.

It's also important to find ways to prepare your body for sleep. You can follow a routine like trying not to expose yourself to too much artificial light within 1 hour before bed, as your brain uses light to help set internal"body clock". Although it might seem unnatural to schedule your sleep, the purpose is to send a signal to your body and mind that it's time to sleep.

Another way to prepare your body for sleep is to get into a relaxed state by taking a bath or listening to soft music. Both of them will help to take the mind off the daytime pressures.

Having a suitable bed, especially a suitable mattress (床垫), is necessary for a good night's sleep. Sleep is a personalized activity, and we all adopt different sleeping positions. Finding the mattress that suits you will reduce back pains that can result from a poor sleeping position. The bed should be four to six inches longer than its tallest user, allowing for space to move around.

The recent research is pretty clear that a good night's sleep in a major component of good health. Since the start of the 21st century, studies have linked a lack of sleep to many diseases, such as diabetes and obesity. Taking action now will lead to long-term benefits for you and those around you.

28. What does the author intend to tell us in the passage?

A. When to start a sound sleep. B. How to get a good night's sleep.

C. What to do with sleep problems. D. Why to form a good habit of sleeping.

29. According to the author, before going to sleep, you'd better __________.

A. free yourself from tension B. check your blood sugar

C. relieve your pain in the back D. record your biological clock

30. What does the underlined word"it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. Not eating food. B. Taking a meal. C. Not sleeping well.  D. Having a good sleep.

31. Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?

I always figured that comedians were the best kind of people to hang around with as a kid. They tell funny stories, make joke after joke, and happiness seems never to leave them. But time goes on, and we come to see these same people as clowns on the outside, but crying a river in the inside. Comedy from these people comes from a deep pain and sadness in their lives, or out of a deep-seated anger they have at the world around them.

Look at Richard Pryor, need I say more? Richard seemed to have everything. For Superman , he ended up getting more money than Christopher Reeve did. Yet he said while he was in his forties that the last truly happy moment he remembered in his life was when he was jumping around in the dirt while pretending to be a cowboy at the age of 10. This guy set himself on fire, and he played that for laugh while performing live at the Sunset Strip! Comedy was his constant weapon against pain, and he never held anything back.

The movie Funny People understand very well this gloomy field many comedians have to survive in. It stars Adam Sandler as George Simmons, a famous comedian in the movie. Simmons has it all: a beautiful mansion overlooking the sea, a swimming pool, great cars, and so on. But in his eyes, we see that he is a sad man who has come to truly look down upon himself for what he has become. All the wealth he has collected only serves to separate him from the rest of the world and it makes him defensive when around total strangers who cannot see him as a normal person. But now , he hears from his doctor that he has a terminal disease and has only months left to live. Simmons reacts to this news as if someone took away his blood in the heart, and it makes him clearly see just how much he hates his life. So now he has to make every minute count. Then come a series of funny stories.

Comedy is just life as it is , isn’t it?

32. What can we infer about “comedians” according to the text?

$来&源:A. Comedians like to get along with kids.

B. Comedians’ life is full of jokes.

C. Comedians often use their sad experience.

D. Comedians often cry in their daily life.

33. When was the happiest moment for Richard Pryor?

A. When he played the part of Superman Ⅲ.

B. When he got more money than Christopher Reeve.

C. When he pretended to be a cowboy in the childhood.

D. When he performed live at the Sunset Strip.

34. Why was George Simmons unhappy?

A. He wasn’t accepted by the outside world

B. He had no friends at all

C. He spent too much on his house

D. He was hated by all the strangers around

35. By saying “Comedy is just life as it is, isn’t it?”,the author means_________-_.

A. life like comedy will make you happy

B. comedy comes from the sadness in real life

C. there is no happiness at all in real life

D. life is full of comedy in reality
