A

It’s exciting to imagine how future humans will have solved the problems we have now, or what amazing new inventions will make our lives more convenient and interesting. We asked top scientists to share their predictions on what the world will be like in a century. If they’re right, the 2114 is going to be really cool.

  1. Robots will do your chores and more
Robots will be doing most of our jobs, from building homes to teaching math. There are already robots that clean floors and pump gas. In the future they will be more complicated and useful. Unfortunately, with robots taking all the jobs, unemployment will be high.
  2. You will read minds.
Speaking of being social, we will communicate in an entirely different way. Forget texts and emails. Mind-reading technology will allow us to send thoughts to each other without speaking a word. We will also be able to send thoughts to objects around us. (Instead of pressing “start” on the microwave, you could just think “start.”) Meanwhile, chips implanted(植入)in our brains will improve memory and intelligence.
  3. Your car will drive you
Today, around 30,000 Americans die in car accidents each year. One hundred years from now, accidents will be a thing of the past. According to Mark Safford, consultant or the U.S. Department of Transportation, future cars will drive themselves. These electric cars will communicate with other cars on the road to travel safely in close formation at high speeds.
  4. You will eat fake meat.
Raising animals is not an efficient way to produce food, and it harms the environment: Cows, chickens, and pigs eat a lot, and then we have to deal with all that poop(粪便). What’s more, that poop can rise up poisoning lakes, rivers, and streams. Today, scientists can “grow” meat in a lab from animal cells, but it’s expensive and not very delicious. In the future, they will have perfected the process. You’ll order hamburgers that come from factories, not cows. Scientists may even find ways to make lab-grown meat tastier and healthier than the real thing.
1.According to the passage, what is likely to happen when robots become more common in the future?
    1. People will be much lazier. B. More people will lose their jobs.

C. People may become physically weaker. D. More people may become less intelligent.

2.According to the passage, in the future cars will be__________.

  1. less popular B. more expensive

C. much easier to operate D. much smaller and lighter

3.Future meat will be ________.

  1. much more affordable B. less tasty but healthier

C. more organic and delicious D. more environmentally friendly

4.What is the passage mainly about?

  1. The history of human life. B. The predictable future life.
    C. The development of science. D. The latest scientific findings.
    B
The USA is a land of immigrants. Between 1815 and 1914, the world saw the great peaceful migration in its history: 35 million people, mostly Europeans, left their homelands to start new lives in America. Why did these people risk everything by leaving their homes and families?
First, one major cause of the departure among European peasants was the rise in population which in turn led to hunger. Another was politics. Many young men fled eastern Europe to avoid being forced to join the army.
Physical hunger provided another pressing reason. Following the failure of the economy of southern Italy in the 1860s, hundreds of thousands decided to make a new start in America.
Religion also encouraged millions to leave the Old World.
In short, people chose to leave their homes for social, economic and religious reasons. As a result, by 1890 among a total population of 63 million, there were more than nine million foreign-born Americans.
But what were the attractions? First of all, there was the promise of land which was so scarce in Europe. Next, factories were calling out for labour, and pay and conditions were much better than back home. Men were needed to open up the West and build the long railroads, and settlers were needed to populate new towns and develop commerce. There was the space for religious communities to practice their faith in peace.
As we know, there were losers. To start with, there were those unwilling immigrants, the slaves who had been used as a source of cheap labour. Nor should we forget the equally awful fate of the American Indians. By 1860 there were 27 million free whites, four million slaves and a only 488000 free blacks.
Nowadays, the USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land. As always, it remains an attractive place to the ambitious and the energetic who are ready to commit themselves to the land that gives them a second chance.
    5. What is not given as a reason for emigration in the passage?
    1. The search for religious freedom. B. The search for adventure.

C. Avoidance of military (军事的) service. D. Economics.

6. The lives of 19th Century European peasants were difficult because ______.

  1. there was no shortage of land B. there was no peace

C. the population had gone down D. there were too many of them

7. Which of the following can best summarize the whole passage?

  1. The USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land.
  2. The USA is a land of immigrants.
  3. Religion encouraged millions to leave the Old World.
  4. About one-eighth of non-native born Americans live in the USA in 1890.

8. We know from the passage that ________.

  1. All people coming to the New Land was successful.
  2. All people came to the USA out of their willingness.
  3. Some people were forced to be brought to the USA.
  4. the story of the Native Americans was the saddest one.

Each time I see a balloon , my mind flies back to a memory when I was a six-year-old girl . It was a rainy Sunday and my father had recently died . I asked my mum if my dad had gone to heaven . “ Yes , honey . Of course , ” she said . “ Can we write him a letter ? ”

Eagerly , I got my favorite pen , and poured out my six-year-old heart in the form of blue ink . I gave the letter to Mum . She read it over , and a smile crossed her face . She made a hole in the corner of the letter to tie it to the balloon . We went outside and she gave me the balloon . It was still raining . “ Okay , on the count of three , let it go . One , two , three . ” The balloon , carrying my letter , flew upwards against the rain . We watched until it was swallowed by the mass of clouds . Later I realized , like the balloon , that Dad had never let his sickness get him down . He was strong . No matter what he suffered , he’d keep on , fly up , and finally go beyond this cold world and his sick body . He rose into sky and became something beautiful . London Underground

The world’s first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease(减轻) the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.

The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰), as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year.

13.What led the British government to build the London Underground?

A. Traffic jams and pollution. B. Population and pollution.

C. Overcrowding and traffic jams. D. The poverty and subway problems.

21___40 D A B A D B D A A C A C B C C B A B D A

1. D。 keep rich意思是“富有”,从后文she was even willing to work without pay.

2. A。从空后的that helped other businesses find jobs for old people.

7. D。从后文She began to write a newspaper column called“Sixty Plus”,我们知道,她为国家杂志写人物故事是以前的事。

8. A。联系上下文Old people like herself.

11. A。从空后的see the truth behind a problem我们得知,Anna Douglas用的是 thinking abilities。

Say good things to them and about them.

a to tolerate offered to constantly conveniences Fold

45.解析:admission意为“准许进入”,admission to a university指“被大学录取”。 2.Some 46.

However different quickly translation surprised

【小题1】giving →given 【小题2】or→ and【小题3】they→ we【小题4】said→ say

【小题5】with→ in【小题6】shyly →shy【小题7】Don’t后加be【小题8】them →it

【小题9】At 后去掉the【小题10】which →what

1】giving →given 。Never shall I forget the first English lesson giving by Miss Liu.。

2】or→ and。we found that she was a young or beautiful lady.

3】they→ we。Then she introduced herself and said they shouldn’t call her Teacher Liu。

4】said→ say。she asked us to go to the blackboard and said something about ourselves with English in turn。

5】with→ in。……. and said something about ourselves with English in turn。“用某种语言”,介词用in,所以把with改为in。

【小题6】shyly →shy。I felt so shyly that I didn’t dare to say anything before the class.。

【小题7】Don’t后加Be。“Don’t afraid …..”.

8】them →it 。“…..I believe you can do them well”。

【小题9】At 后去掉the。At the last, 1 went to the blackboard.。固定短语:at last “最后”,所以把the去掉。

【小题10】which →what。She praised me for which I had done。
