Many people in high school can not wait to go to college and leave their hometowns behind. Questions arise, though, when it comes to all of the decisions involved in choosing a college.

One of the first considerations may be finance. State and public colleges are often the least expensive. Often, though, the better colleges are private and more expensive. It is sad when gifted students cannot attend a college of their choice just for financial reasons.

Another major factor is location. Whether the college is in a small town or large city can have a major impact on its activities. A water lover probably will be more comfortable spending four years near an ocean or a lake. Those who cannot tolerate heat will probably be more comfortable at a northern college. Distance from home may also come into consideration. If family is a top priority, that person should stay close to home; on the other hand, if independence is desired, a campus farther from home would be more appropriate.

School size also plays a major role in the decision process. If you want to get to know your teachers, a small college is suitable. For those of you who consider yourself a “people person” and want a wide range of activities, a large college is more fitting. Your area of interest is another factor to consider in the decision-making process if you want to get the most from your education. The whole point of college is to learn what is of interest to you.

Crucially(至关重要地), one must take into consideration the colleges by which you can realistically be accepted. An Ivy League school for an average student would probably not be a good match. Similarly, an average school for an above-average student would not work well. The college should provide enough of a challenge for the student to work hard. Although there may not be the perfect college out there, there probably will be one that is close. Those who cannot find a suitable college are probably not looking hard enough.

21.When it comes to going to college the author thinks .

A. students will become homesick

B. students are unwilling to leave their home

C. financial situation is the first to consider

D. students are eager to attend their ideal university

22. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A. The location of the college is a main factor.

B. A long distance will make students upset.

C. Students can be independent at college.

D. The climate must be taken into consideration.

23. What does the underlined part “people person” in the passage mean?

A. A person of great capacityB. A very sociable person

C. A very particular personD. A person of great importance

24. Which is the most important factor when choosing a college?

A. The location of a collegeB. School size

C. The examination resultsD. the coming challenges.

Death Valley is the lowest, hottest, driest area in North America. This California National Park has less than 5cm of rainfall a year and temperature up to 53oC in summer. That’s enough to keep Americans away during the hottest months from June to August. But it is the high temperature and terrible heat that draw their most crazy fans, the foreign tourists. From all over the world, they come to the valley floor in cars, carrying maps and water bottles, and fanning themselves with newspapers to keep cool.

About 1.3 million visitors enter the park each year, from June through August. 90% of them are foreigners. They go there to experience the summer heat that gives Death Valley its name. The average high in July is 53.2oC and the low 30oC. For August, the average high is 52.2oC and the low 29.4oC.

So what do Americans think of the foreign visitors who arrive for the heat, just when locals from the United States try to avoid it? Park manager Brenda Henson says, “The foreigners want to experience the heat in Death Valley. We think it’s crazy.”

In fact, Death Valley is a series of salt flats(盐滩) 225 km long and 6 km to 26 km wide. Birds and animals are largely absent, and only the hardiest plants have any chance of existence in this extreme place.

One tourist from Paris concluded, “We come to here because we can tell all our friends and family that we’ve been to the hottest place in the world”.

A few years ago a literary agent turned me down after he read a couple chapters of my manuscript(稿件). After I received the rejection, I responded to his email with a question. “So is it the lack of platform,” I asked him, “or the quality of the writing…or both?”

He answered quickly. “To tell you the truth, you don’t have a strong enough platform yet, but the bigger issue right now is your voice. Your writing is okay, but your voice needs work.”

Staring at that reply on my computer screen, I burst into tears. That was the day I quit writing and gave up my dream to publish my book. “It’s too hard, too disappointing,” I complained to my husband later that evening. My husband listened carefully, and then he asked me a single question: “Can you imagine your life without writing?”

I didn’t even have to think about it. “No,” I answered Brad. “No, I can’t image my life without writing.”

“Well then keep at it,” Brad encouraged. “Keep writing. Something will come of it.”

Not long after, I hired a professional editor to work with me on the manuscript. The editor observed two voices competing on the pages: the personal voice and the instructional voice. The two voices didn’t play well together, the editor concluded; switching from one voice to the other was unsettling to the reader.

I wish I could tell you that reworking the manuscript was an inspiring, fulfilling process. But it wasn’t. It was hard, slow work. Another entire year passed before the manuscript was ultimately accepted by a different agent. And it was another two years before that agent was able to sell the book to a publisher.

I’m grateful my husband asked me that pointed question the day the agent rejected my manuscript.

And I’m even strangely grateful the agent offered such a searing criticism of my work. Without it, I might have been satisfied with writing that was merely “okay”.

33. What was the author’s biggest problem with her writing?

A. The voice in it needed to be improved.

B. There was lack of platform in it.

C. He didn’t show his personal voice in it.

D. There was a strong platform in it.

34. Who helped the author improve her writing?

A. Her husbandB. A professional editor

C. A different agentD. A famous writer.

35. Why is the author grateful to the literary agent who turned her down?

A. He made her realize her writing needed improving.

B. He encouraged her to go on writing.

C. He pointed out her potential in writing.

D. He gave practical advice on her writing.

范文

Dear sir,

I’m writing to request a valuable chance to be one of the host families of the British students.

We have a large and clean house, which lies in a beautiful area of the city. I’m good at English and my parents are both professors of English, so I’m sure we won’t have any difficulty communicating with English speakers. My father is an excellent driver and we will be very glad to show foreign students around some nearby places of interest in our own car. Last month we received two American students. We had a great time. Besides, my mother cooks well, so the students will be able to enjoy delicious Chinese food.

I would greatly appreciate it if I could have the chance to make friends with them.

Looking forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Xiaoming
