Filmmaker Jennifer Nelson had to pay $ 1,500 to have “Happy Birthday to You” sung in the movie she’s making. The money went to Warner Music Group, a company that claims to own the copyright on the song. A copyright is the legal right to use or sell a creative product such as a song, a TV show, a book, or a work of art. Warner has claimed the copyright for “Happy Birthday to You” since 1988.
“I never thought the song was owned by anyone,” Nelson said in an e-mail to The New York Times.“I thought it belonged to everyone.”
Nelson’s movie is a documentary-a film that uses pictures and/or interviews with people to create a factual report of real-life events-and is actually about the history of the “Happy Birthday” song itself.
Two sisters named Mildred and Patty Hill wrote a song called “Good Morning to All” in 1893. Over a short period of time, people began to sing the words “happy birthday to you” in place of the original lyrics to the tune of the Hill sisters’ song.
A number of history experts say that there is no record of who actually wrote the “Happy Birthday to You” lyrics. Historians also say there is no way to know when the general public began singing the “Happy Birthday” song, but they believe it was being sung by the public long before it was printed and owned by a company.
Nelson’s lawyers say this piece of music’s history proves that “Happy Birthday to You” belongs to everyone in the general public. That would mean Warner Music Group has no right to charge anyone a fee to sing the song in any setting.
Experts estimate that Warner/Chappell, the publishing division of the Warner Music Group, has made about $ 2 million a year from licensing fees for “Happy Birthday to You.”
Nelson’s lawyers are asking a court in New York City to order Warner/Chappell to return fees they have collected over the past four years for use of the “Happy Birthday” song.
  21. Jennifer Nelson had to pay Warner Music Group to .
    1. own the copyright on a song B. have a song sung in her movie
      C. have it play a song in her movieD. have it write a song for her movie
  22. The history experts’ statement can prove that the “Happy Birthday” song .
    1. has always been very popularB. has more than 200 year history
      C. does not belong to Warner Music GroupD. was initially owned by another company
  23. If the court supports Nelson’s lawyers’ claims, .
    1. Warner will return about $ 8 millionB. she can obtain the copyright on the song
      C. Warner will have to pay her for her damages
      D. she only needs to pay a little money to use the song
      B
Is it possible to be both 8 and 80 years old at the same time? The answer is yes-if you count comic-strip(连环画) characters. Nancy, a third-grader, is the star of a popular comic strip found in newspapers across the country and around the world. That comic strip, also called Nancy, turns 80 this year.
Nancy’s Aunt Fritzi was the star of a comic strip called Fritzi Ritz in 1922. Eleven years later, Nancy showed up on Fritzi’s doorstep as an orphan(孤儿). Nancy stole the spotlight, and the comic was renamed. Today, Nancy remains a well-known character, with her comic strip appearing in more than 80 newspapers. TFK Kid Reporter Faye Collins recently spoke with Guy Gilchrist, who has been the comic strip’s author and illustrator(插图画家)since 1995.
      TFK:
What is the best part about drawing the comic strip Nancy?
      GUY GIL CHRIST:
It’s that something I’m doing actually can affect people in America or in the whole world. I get to be a part of something really positive that hopefully makes readers smile. Maybe there’s something that touches them.
      TFK:
Tell us about Nancy and the other characters.
      GUY GILCHRIST:
Nancy is eight years old in the comic strip. She is a regular kid who is loud but very sweet. She loves the character Sluggo though no one knows why, and the two of them are orphans. Aunt Fritzi takes care of both of them, and now Phil is in the strip and is kind of taking care of Sluggo.
      TFK:
What inspires your ideas for the comic strip?
      GUY GILCHRIST:
I’ve been writing things down in little composition books for many years. If I don’t have ideas, and I really can’t think of anything, I’ll look at old composition books. I’ll take some of those old ideas that didn’t really work and I’ll figure out why they didn’t work, and I’ll use them.
  24. The comic strip Fritzi Ritz was given a new name because .
    1. the character Fritzi passed away B. the old name is hard to remember
      C. the new name sounds more interesting D. the character Nancy became very popular
  25. Guy Gilchrist’s favorite part about drawing Nancy is that .
    1. he gets relaxed while drawing B. his works earn him much money
      C. his works can influence lots of people D. he becomes very famous around the world
  26. Which of the following is TRUE about the character Nancy?
    1. She is quiet and smart. B. She lives with her parents.
      C. She is looked after by Fritzi. D. She has a brother named Sluggo.
  27. While drawing Nancy, Guy Gilchrist takes inspiration from .
    1. his regular readersB. some of his friends
      C. some popular booksD. his old compositions
      C
John Harrison has what must be the most wanted job in the United States. He’s the official taster for Edy’s Grand Ice Cream, one of the nation’s best-selling brands. Harrison’ s taste buds(味蕾)are insured for $ 1 million. He gets to try 60 ice creams a day. And when he isn’t doing that, he travels, buying Edy’s in supermarkets all over the country so that he can check for perfect appearance and flavor.
After I interviewed Harrison, I realized that the life of an ice cream taster isn’t all Cookies‘n’Cream-a wonderful flavor that he invented. No, it’s extremely hard work, which requires self-control and selflessness.
For one thing, he doesn’t swallow on the job. Like a coffee taster, Harrison spits. Using a gold spoon to avoid “off” flavors, he takes a small bite and moves it around in his mouth to introduce it to all 9,000 or so taste buds. Next he opens his mouth to get some air into the ice cream. Then he breathes in gently to bring the aroma(香味)of the ice cream up through the back of his nose. Each step helps Harrison assess whether the ice cream has a good balance of dairy, sweetness, and added ingredients. Then, even if the ice cream tastes heavenly, he puts it into a trash can.
During the workweek, Harrison told me that he has to make other sacrifices, too: no onions, garlic, and no caffeine(咖啡因). Caffeine will affect the taste buds, he said, so his breakfast is a cup of tea. This is a small price to pay for what he calls the world’s best job.
Harrison’s family has been in the ice cream business in one way or another for four generations, so Harrison has spent his entire life with it. However, he has never lost his love for its cold, creamy sweetness. He even orders ice cream in restaurants for dessert.
  28. What is special about Harrison’s job?
    1. He buys ice cream for his customers. B. He invents a lot of new ice creams.
      C. His daily task is to taste ice cream. D. His work is related to insurance.
  29. The author develops the third paragraph mainly .
    1. by classificationB. by comparisonC. by importanceD. by process
  30. The underlined part “a small price” in the fourth paragraph means that .
    1. Harrison must travel around the country a lot
    2. Harrison’s taste buds have been affected by caffeine
    3. Harrison avoids some kinds of food and drink for his work
    4. Harrison must order ice cream for dessert when eating in restaurants
  31. What is the text mainly about?
    1. An ice cream taster’s job.B. How to taste an ice cream.
      C. A famous ice cream brand.D. How ice creams are invented.
      D

You might take a car, a bus, or a bike to school. But in Bangladesh, instead of waiting for a school bus to come down their street, many students wait for a school boat to come down the river. That’s right—these students attend school on a boat!

Bangladesh is very close to sea level.______36______ The flooding creates many problems. For the nearly 160 million people living there, the periodic flooding means that they are often unable to access roads, electricity, or telephones.

Growing up in Bangladesh, Mohammed Rezwan was often troubled by these disruptions(破坏). ______37_____ The name means “self-reliance (自力更生).” The purpose of the organization is to help the people of Bangladesh receive an education and also to bring technology and an improved quality of life to poor people in remote areas of the country. In 2002, Rezwan began transforming boats into schools. Each boat was built to house between 30 and 35 students. The boats had everything you might find in a regular classroom. The only difference was that they floated on a river.

______38______ Today Rezwan and his organization operate 88 boats in northern Bangladesh. About half the boats are used as schools, and the other half are used as temporary houses during the flood season. In addition to the schools and the temporary housing, there are also a floating technology and training center, a library that allows students to check out books, and a health-care center. The school boats travel along the rivers and pick up students for classes that include computer technology, agriculture, and human rights.

At night the boats provide additional learning opportunities for students and adults. ______39______ They study using solar lamps that are charged during the day at stations near the river. Special equipment on the boats also projects lessons onto big screens made from sail cloth. People can come down to the river bank to watch films. In all, these boats help educate close to 90,000 families in Bangladesh.

By floating down the rivers, the school boats provide more than books. ______40______ “This ‘library’ boat inspired me,” said 18-year-old student Shanto Islam, who enjoys reading science fiction books. “I started to dream.” Islam now wants to attend a university.

A. In 1998 he founded an organization called Shidhulai.

写作:The Ten-minute Break Between Classes

Time seems to be so limited for us senior high school students. Thus, with so much work to do, a great many students are always eager to seize every minute to study in and after class, including the ten-minute break. However, the outcome isn’t as satisfying as expected.

As far as I know, we need the short break, of which the significance can’t be overlooked. As a matter of fact, the ten-minute break helps us keep a balance between study and relaxation. Short as the break is, we can refresh ourselves and get well prepared for the next class. Thus, there is no need to push ourselves to study even during the short ten-minute break.

Now I’d like to share with you my ten-minute break activities. During the ten minutes, I will walk out of the classroom, breathe the fresh air, and then make preparations for the next class. Only in this way can I do my work remarkably well.
