Once a man needed a new pair of shoes .This man was very good at math. He knew that in order to get shoes that fit very well, it would be necessary to measure his foot size correctly.
So, before he went to the market, he carefully measured his feet and drew a very detailed picture of his feet on a piece of paper. Then before leaving the house, like a good mathematician, he rechecked his picture.
It was a very long way from the man’s home to the market. It was past mid-day when the man arrived at the market. When the man reached the shoe stall. He realized that he had forgotten to bring his paper. He turned around and walked all the way back home to get it.
It was nearly sunset when the man returned to the market. There he found the market was closing. The shoemaker had packed up all of his shoes. “Foolish man,” the shoemaker said to the man when he was asked to unpack hid goods to make a sale. “Why did you not just try on the shoes?”
The man hung his head shamefully, saying, “I guessed there was only one way to solve my problem. I should have checked with others for another solution that might have worked as well or better than my own.”
The above short story works well with school students and also teachers. Don’t try to solve a problem with a single point of view; there may be many other ways of solving the same problem.
21. Before the man went to the market, he _________.
A. asked others for some advice.
B. knew well about his foot size
C. measured his old shoes carefully
D. drew a pair of shoes on a piece of paper

C. We should think carefully before we act.
D. There is more than one way to solve a problem.

Leonie Muller is writing her paper on the nomadic(流浪的) life, and while doing it, she’s living on a train. But she’s not just riding the train for research purpose. The 23-year-old German student pays only $180 a month and lives out of her backpack.
Of course there are disadvantages to this style of living. Using only public toilets and showers would become tiring after a while. And living out of a bag surely lack the comforts of home.
But the advantages are huge. Not only does Muller get to see the countryside, but Germany’s rail network travels to the far corners of the country and makes frequent stops in all the cities, so she’s able to see friends and family regularly. Her most frequent travels have been between Berlin, her boyfriend’s place in Cologne, and her university at Tubingen.
Plus, Germany’s trains run on time. So Muller doesn’t have to worry too much about arriving late for a meeting with a friend or getting stuck on the train for longer than she was expecting. And also, the Wi-Fi on the trains is excellent and free.y It’s not for everyone, but I’m one traveler who finds this idea fantastic. Could I do it in the United States?
I did some research and found out that there are 30-day passes(乘车券)on Amtrak(美国铁路公司).So, with a $689 pass, a bit of planning and staying with family or friends for a few nights, you might be able to do a full month of travel, spending much of it on the Amtrak trains and the rest with the generous people you know. Even figuring in two or three nights at inexpensive hotels, that’s still cheaper than the rent.
24.Why does Muller live on a train?
A. To save money.
B. To do some research.
C. To meet her friends regularly.
D. To experience a nomadic life.
25.What are Para.3 and Para.4 mainly about?
A. The popularity of living on the train.
B. The advantages of living on the train.
C. What Muller’s daily life on the train is like.
D. How to have a comfortable life on the train.
26.What’s the author’s attitude towards living on the train?
A. Worried. B. Grateful. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
27.To have a full month of travel with a 30-day pass on Amtrak ,you____________.
A. may pay less than 689 US dollars.
B. have to stay in hotels for two or three nights.
C. must plan the travel with your family and friends.
D. need to spend a few nights someplace outside the trains.
C
I’ve heard that it’s better to give than to receive, but I think that both of them have their special magic.
When I was nine years old, my parents went to work in a faraway(遥远的) state. Before they left, they took me and my younger sister to the shelter of my grandparents, who would take care of our needs with meals ,love and transportation to and from a lot of activities and lessons. At that young age, I had no choice but to become independent, although sometimes I felt upset, lonely and angry. I knew that if no one could meet my needs, I would have to become completely self-sufficient(自给自足).Believe it or not, I got a little carried away. Finally, I become so successful that I could take care of everyone in my life.
Once, I took my son to see Santa Claus. When my son wanted to buy the picture that was taken ,I opened my wallet, only to find that I didn’t have enough money. When I got to the checkout counter to take back the picture, I was told that a man in line ahead of me had seen me counting my change and had paid for the picture for me, The color rushed into my checks when other customers strangely stared at me. I realized that it was okay to let someone do something for me, even if I could have done it myself.
I believe that we are all in this wonderful world together. It’s not about my strength and independence or how much I have. It’s about allowing the giver to be blessed when the gift is received. Now I know that giving and receiving are two halves of a whole, each incomplete without the other.
28.Why was the author brought up by her grandparents?
A. Her parents had no time to take care of her.
B. Her mother wanted to teach her to be independent.
C. Her grandmother was more experienced than her parents.
D. Her grandmother could meet her different needs in life.
29.According to Paragraph2, what does the underlined sentence mean?
A. She became very proud of herself. B. She put much effort in helping others.
C. She left her parents when she was little. D. She did more than what she had expected.
C. wash them in hot water before eating them
D. put them in hot water before refrigerating them
C. they can be sold at a good price D. they are still fresh in supermarkets
