“Privacy”is translated as“yin si”in Chinese. Traditionally,in the Chinese mind,“yin si”is associated with that which is closed or unfair. If someone is said to have“yin si”,meddlers(好事者)will be attracted to pry(打探)into his or her affairs. So people always state that they don't have“yin si”.

On the contrary,Americans often declare intention to protect their privacy. Their understanding of privacy is that others have no right to pry into things which belong to themselves alone and have nothing to do with others. One who is too curious and who spreads rumors is said to violate the right to privacy.

In the evening,Sonia and I went to a bar for dinner. In China, when people mention bars, something bad usually comes to mind. But here, the bar was a quiet and tastefully laidout place. People spoke quite softly, afraid of interrupting their neighbors, and sat face to face as they drank, sometimes three or five persons sitting together.

This sort of atmosphere was totally different from my preconception(传统观念),so I wanted to take a picture. Sonia stopped me,“Don't you see these people are pouring out their hearts?Maybe they are colleagues, friends, secret lovers. They came here looking for a peaceful place free from interruption by others. They wouldn't want to leave any trace of their having come here. So taking their pictures would be a serious violation of their right to privacy.”

Is there privacy between husband and wife? One of Sonia's friends married a talented Chinese man,but recently she became so angry that she wanted a divorce. The reason was that her husband had opened one of her letters and looked through her purse. The husband didn't realize that this is not tolerated in the US. He thought that being a couple was like being one person;why couldn't he see the letter or the contents of the purse?Truly, everyone, even those living as a couple, needs room—not only in three-dimensional space, but in the heart.

24.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Everyone has the right to privacy.

B.There is privacy between husband and wife in America.

C.The understanding of“privacy”is different in China and America.

D.Everyone in every country needs room for himself.

D.taking pictures in a bar would interrupt the neighbors

26.One of Sonia's friends wanted a divorce because____.

Have you played it? It's a game for a person or for a carload.

Someone begins,“I'm grateful to God for...”And he or she shares something. Then the next person gives gratitude for something. This goes on for 5 minutes or more until you reach your destination. There's no loser. Everyone feels happy after expressing gratitude. And sometimes you discover amazing things.

My 5yearold granddaughter and I played the gratitude game when she visited us. I found out she was grateful to her friend Josh... and“the other Josh”. She was grateful to go swimming at the pool. She was grateful to have a daddy who played with her and to a nice mommy.

She would begin the gratitude games as soon as we settled into the car to drive somewhere. Playing it with her, I tried to be honest and not just say something fast. I really stopped to think. What was I grateful for at the moment? That our country was not at war. That we had plenty to eat. Playing the game made me more aware of the good things in my life.

A friend of mine was having a tough time seeing that there wasn't any good in his life. I suggested to my friend that he take a few minutes before going to bed and write down all the good things he could think of that happened during the day.

Later he told me what happened. He couldn't think of anything good. But he persisted until he was able to write a few things down. The next morning he decided to look for signs of good during the day. He sat down on his front steps. A robin(知更鸟) landed on the grass. In his words, it began“doing a little dance”, preening(整理羽毛) and cleaning itself. He watched the entire show. It was delightful. He realized that if he hadn't been really looking for good, he would never have noticed the robin and would have missed what to him was a remarkable display.

That evening he filled several pages with recordings of good that had happened during the day and things he was grateful for. Gratitude had made a huge difference!

28.The purpose of the gratitude game is to________.

A.let people share their gratitude to God

B.make people realize the good things around them

C.discover amazing things in life

D.practice people's skill of expressing themselves

29.What was the problem with the writer's friend?

A.He had lost his purpose of life.

B.He saw nothing worth his appreciation.

C.He had trouble remembering what had happened during the day.

D.He found it hard to play the game.

30.In which way has the game helped the writer's friend?

A.It made him interested in birds. B.It opened his eyes to nothing good in life.

C.It taught him the necessity of giving gratitude.

D.It inspired him to play the gratitude game every day.

31.The story of the writer's friend tells us that________.

A.life is meaningless to a person who doesn't know how to give gratitude

B.one can always find relief in nature when he is in depression

C.it's not difficult to find good things in life if one starts looking for them

D.gratitude plays an important role in changing a person's character

In America, parents tend to encourage their children to develop their potential to the fullest extent. Fathers and mothers frequently teach their children both ambition and the confidence necessary to work toward their goals. American parents are always active in concentrating on what their kids can do, not what they can’t. As a result, millions of American boys and girls grow up hoping to become actors and athletes, diplomats and doctors. Many of them even want to become president.

American parents often encourage their children to become involved in extra activities of all types at school, such as student government, sports and music. They believe that only through taking part in these activities can their children become mature young adults.

As we all know, schoolwork is important. But parents should realize that the social skills their children learn from natural conversations with each other are as important as schoolwork and the skills they will need in the future work. What’s more important in their work is that their children should have a sound knowledge of physics or the ability to communicate effectively. As a rule, Chinese parents don’t educate their children about the same kind of ambition and confidence as Americans do, nor do they encourage the same level of participation in extra activities. Children are typically advised to study hard and pass exams. They have to spend a lot of time in doing much schoolwork every day. It is a great waste of time to do so.

Now more and more Chinese parents have recognized that they should pay attention to developing the potential of their children. I hope that leaders in Chinese educational circles should take some measures to develop the potential of their children. I am very confident about it.

32.From the passage, we know the American parents pay much more attention to

________.

A.their children’s studying hard and well

B.the social skills than Chinese parents

C.what their children want but they can’t

D.extra activities than schoolwork

33.According to the passage, Chinese parents ________.

A.don’t encourage their children to participate in extra activities

B.owning ambition and confidence is necessary and important

C.pay much more attention to their children’s fine future

D.know more than American parents to educate their children

34.From the passage, we can infer _______.

A.American children are brave and adventurous

B.American children are more active in their studies

C.Something should be done to develop the potential of the children in China

D.Chinese children have the ability to communicate effectively

35.What’s the writer’s attitude towards Chinese education reform?

A.Neutral.B.Indifferent.C.Negative.D.Positive.
