One of the biggest social issues in Japan is the increasingly low marriage rate among young people and the small birth rate, which led to an aging and eventually shrinking population. Most young Japanese women simply don't seem interested in having many children.

Now what began in Japan is happening globally. As David Brooks wrote, birth rate is becoming smaller in much of the world, from Iran一1.7 births rate per woman一to Russian, where low birth rates connected with high death rates mean the population is already shrinking. And this includes US, which has long had higher birth rates than most developed nations. Aging countries will face the burden of caring for large elderly populations without a larger resource of young workers.
It's true that global aging is going to present some major challenges. Who will take care of the elderly? Will an older world be less active and slower to change and adapt? It's all true. Sometimes I worry about a coming generational war over resources, just as I worry about how I will take care of my own parents in their old age, just as I worry about who might take care of me.
But here's the thing: an older world may have less pressure on the environment. As we all know, the environment is the real victim of over population.
So maybe a world that grows slower and grows older will put less pressure on the environment, and buy us a few more years to ensure our energy use, along with our birth rates, reaches a sustainable(可持续的)level. After all, we're supposed to get smarter as we get older. Hopefully that holds true for the planet as well.
            24. The population issue in Japan was mentioned to___________.
            A. show young people's preference to marriage
            B. emphasize the revolution of Japanese women
            C. indicate the deeper cause of Japan's depression
    4. introduce the topic of global birth rate becoming smaller
25 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to David Brooks?
      A. The birth rates all over the world are becoming smaller
      B. The most developed countries have higher death rates.
      C. Birth rate's becoming smaller means a great risk to aging countries.
      D. America is the only most developed country with higher birth rate.
      26. Which will be caused by low birth rates according to the passage?
      1. Aging society. B. High death rates.
        C. Low employment rates. D. Environmental problems.
        27. What's the author's attitude to the worldwide birth rates becoming smaller?
        A. Anxious. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Disappointed.
        C
Traditionally, across the world, boys and girls attend a mixed school, where they study together. But boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music.

Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond to(和…相符) the"boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a"real man".
The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.
Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls.
The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when girls do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.
But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.
Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with"boy-focused" approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given"hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around."Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的) and prefer the modern genre (类型) in which violence and sexism are major themes," James wrote.
Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel that they had to be"masterful and in charge" in relationships."In mixed schools, boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means," the study reported.
        28. The author believes that a single-sex school would __________.
        A. force boys to hide their emotions to be"real men"
        B. help boys to be more competitive in schools.
        C. encourage boys to express their emotions more freely
        D. naturally strengthen boys’ traditional image of a man
        29. It is commonly believed that in a mixed school boys __________.
        1. behave more responsibly.B. grow up more healthily.
          C. perform relatively better.D. receive a better education.
          30. According to Abigail James, one of the advantages of single-sex schools is __________.
          A. teaching can be tailored to suit the characteristics of boys
          B. boys can focus on their lessons without being distracted
          C. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in
          D. teaching can be designed to promote boys' team spirit
          31. What does the underlined word acute in paragraph 8 mean?
          1. lovelyB. sharpC. seriousD. dull
            D
Pigeons may only have a brain the size of a thimble (顶针), but it appears that pigeons can categorize and name objects in the same way human children learn new words.
A new study from the University of Iowa has shown that the birds are capable of learning to categorize 128 different photographs into 16 basic categories.
Scientists taught three pigeons to sort out different kinds of dogs or types of shoes, for example by using a particular symbol in exchange for a reward. When they were shown black and white pictures of previously unseen dogs or shoes, the birds were able to correctly match these with the corresponding symbols.
The scientists behind the project say this is a similar approach taken by young children when they are first learning words for objects. However, the researchers said it took their birds around 40 days to perfect the task of learning just 16 categories.
Professor Edward Wasserman, who led the work, said: “Our birds’ rate of learning appears to have been quite slow. Would children learn faster than pigeons? Almost certainly. However, our pigeons came to the experiment with no background knowledge at all. Thus, the more relevant comparison group may be newborn babies, who indeed take 6–9 months to learn their first words.”
Writing in the journal Cognition, the researchers said their experiment was a very simple mirror of the way children are taught words — by their parents pointing to pictures and asking them to name the object.
Pigeons are known to be smarter than many birds. Professor Bob McMurray, who also took part in the study, said the results showed that human learning is not as unique as was previously believed.
He said: “Children are facing a huge task of learning thousands of words without a lot of background knowledge to go on. For a long time, people thought that such learning is special to humans. What this research shows is that the ways in which children solve this huge problem may be shared with many species.
            32. What’s the main idea of this passage?
            A. Pigeons and young children take a similar approach to learn words.
            B. Pigeons are known to be smarter than newborn babies.
            C. Pigeons recognize objects in the same way children learn words.
  4. Pigeons are unique as they can learn like humans.

33. Why does the writer think newborn babies are the more relevant comparison group?

  1. They don’t have any background knowledge.
  2. They learn relatively slow.
  3. Pigeons and newborn babies learn at a similar speed.
  4. Young children are smarter.

34. From the passage, we can learn that .

  1. learning without background knowledge is unique to humans
  2. many species may be able to learn without background knowledge
  3. pigeons are able to solve many huge problems
  4. pigeons are known to be the smartest birds
  1. The passage is intended to .
    1. introduce pigeons B. prove a fact C. support an opinion D. report a study

Having a heart-healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be hard work. It’s just as easy as doing a 5-minutes-a-day strength training program while cooking coffee in the morning, or stopping to think for three seconds when the “you’ve got mail” alert sounds on your computer. 36

37 As you put on weight in adulthood, your weight gain is mostly fat rather than muscle. This extra weight can lead to conditions that increase your chances of heart disease. Even a small weight loss of 10 percent can be helpful for you.

We spend 22 hours a day sitting or lying down. 38 Having a healthy heart means you need to fit movement back into your life, however busy you are. Start by cutting down on convenient short cuts. Doing cleaning by yourself, walking or biking to the corner store, or shopping at stores are all easy ways to get moving.

Fresh, whole foods don’t have to cost more or take more time to prepare than the packaged stuff. These wholesome, delicious foods not only taste good, they also protect your heart by reducing blood fats, driving down elevated blood sugar, and fighting destructive chemicals.

39 It is quite possible that one may die of heart diseases if he or she smokes heavily. So we must keep away from nicotine.

Researchers show that friends and optimism are linked with healthier hearts. 40 so spend an evening curled up on the sofa with your partner instead of watching the night news alone. Also, try these stress-saving solutions: give yourself a massage, or listen to some light music after a long day’s work.

A. Keep a healthy weight.

B. Good mood is quite important for keeping hearts healthy.

C. However, our bodies are built for lots and lots of daily activity.

D. Hearts are healthiest and happiest when in the company of others.

E. Many things such as tobacco, fat, sugar and other polluted things are harmful to our hearts.

F. Hiring a cleaner, driving your car and shopping online may be your daily habits since you are always busy.

G. Including these small steps into your routine one at a time will help you develop a healthier lifestyle without even realizing it.

W: I really like the design, and the price is quite reasonable, but I don’t like blue.

M: We have some other colors for you to choose from. This way, please.

(Text 2)

W: Can you tell me what you usually do in your spare time?

M: Well, I like music — I listen to a lot of pop music — but most of all I like reading a book. It’s much better than watching TV.

(Text 3)

M: Could you take this down to the accounting office for me, please?

W: Sure, Mr. Stone. I will just be on my way down to the shipping department, anyway. Accounting office is just one floor above it, so it’s right on the way and I will do it for you first.

M: Great. Maybe when you get back, I could take you to that Thai restaurant you’re always telling me about.

(Text 4)

W: How about going camping this weekend?

M: I don’t think it’s a good idea. The weather report says we may get some very heavy rain in the mountain areas this weekend.

W: I thought the good weather would last till the end of this week.

M: Well, I’m afraid it won’t.

(Text 5)

M: I lost my ID card. What do I do to replace it?

M: OK. I’m ready.

W: I’ll print you the new ID card in about a minute.

(Text 6)

W: Have you received an invitation to Anna’s party?

M: I don’t know. I haven’t checked my mail yet. When is the party, by the way?

W: On July 10th.

M: That’s too bad. I’m afraid I cannot go. Some friends of mine from Chicago are coming to see me this Friday. I’ve promised to hang out with them the following day. I can’t get out of that, unfortunately. I wish I could.

W: I’m so sorry to hear that. I was really looking forward to seeing you at the party.

M: Don’t worry. I can go next time. Anna throws parties quite often, after all.

W: But I’m leaving America next month. I’ll be in China for a whole year.

M: Really? I cannot believe it.

W: The walls in your room were dull and lifeless, so I covered them with these prints.
M: Oh, I like this one. Where did you buy it?

W: At the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Art History Department recently organized a special museum tour there.

M: Is this a copy of something in the museum collection?

W: Yes, it’s a print of a painting by Georgia O’Keefe.

M: Is the Art History Department planning another museum tour here in Washington?

W: No. The next one is a special exhibit of European painters at the Museum of Find Out in Boston. I think I will sign up for that one. Maybe I will even come back with prints to cover the bare walls of my room.

W: Welcome to our program. Today we have invited Fred Wocson, a driving instructor with over 20 years of experience, to talk to us about learning to drive. Well, Fred, do you think it’s getting expensive to learn to drive these days?

M: Well, it depends. If you come to a private instructor like me, it’s going to be a bit less expensive than going to a big school. The thing is, most people have usually heard of the big schools by the Internet or newspapers so they go there. My first customer is one of my friends, so I usually get my customers through personal connections.

W: Does that mean you have to try hard to get customers?

M: Not now. When I started, I had to work hard and taught one-to-one, but at the moment I am fully booked, and my prices are quite competitive.

W: No wonder you have so many customers.

W: All right, everyone. Please pay attention. Can everyone hear me in the back?

M: Yes!

W: Good. Today, we’re going to talk about your term papers.

M: I thought we only had some weekly tests, monthly reports, a midterm, and a final for this class.

W: I have decided to take out the weekly tests and add a term paper instead. I think this will give you all a better opportunity to show what you have learned.

M: How long should the paper be?

W: All papers should be at least five pages long, but no more than ten pages long.

M: How should we decide what to write about?

W: You can focus on any period from the 18th to the 19th century. You can basically write about anything you want, but you must choose an idea, present an argument, and support it with research. That means you will need to find some sources from the library or online.

M: What kinds of sources are acceptable?

W: Books and articles in newspapers, journals, or magazines are going to be your best sources of information. Interviews might also be okay, but you should discuss these with me in advance.

M: When are the papers due?

W: All papers will be due on January 22. That gives you exactly four months to finish them. However, we will have meetings every month where you will need to have completed certain parts of the paper.

Please listen carefully. We’ll be hiking down into the Grand Canyon soon. But even though it’s a comfortable 26°C here now, it’ll get much hotter as we go down. In fact, when we get to the bottom four hours from now, it’ll be 43°C down there. So, most important, everyone must take along at least three liters of water. You’d better wear comfortable clothes and take some medicine in case you suffer from an illness. The heat can kill! In fact this year four people have already died in the Grand Canyon from heat exhaustion. One of them, a healthy 24-year-old man, just died one week ago. These have been the first heat-related deaths in the Grand Canyon in five years. Normally, people die in the Grand Canyon when they fall into it. Sometimes they also just get lost or get bitten by snakes, but this year has been extremely hot. The average daily temperature has been 41°C at the bottom. So, be careful and tell me if you feel uncomfortably hot. Last, I will carry a GPS; one will take a compass; three other persons will take a map. Well, good luck!
