When you are bored with running at school, be sure to think of the 91-year-old woman
Harriet Thompson, who not only finished the San Diego Rock N’ Roll marathon on May 31st, 2014, but also broke SDRNR marathon’s records. She was the oldest runner in this marathon as well as the fastest in the 90-to-94 year-old group.
She finished the 26.2 mile race in 7 hours 7 minutes 42 seconds, breaking the earlier record of 8 hours 53 minutes 8 seconds set by Mavis Lindgren in 1997. While these are her first records, Harriet, who ran at the speed of 16 minutes and 20 seconds a mile, is no stranger to this competition. She has taken part in 15 of the last 16 San Diego Rock N’ Roll marathons and only missed last year, because she had a cancer, which she successfully beat.
What’s even more amazing is that the grandmother who ran the marathon alongside her 55-year old son Brenny, took up the sport at the age of 76! Harriet says that she normally trains with a group. However this year she decided to run alone because she had a hard time keeping up, given that most of them are about 60-70 years younger.
Harriet says she runs to keep healthy and raise money for a hospital, which is close to her heart, thanks to her family’s cancer history. Over the years, she has raised over $90,000 for the hospital. And she is not done yet! Harriet says she plans to train harder and come back even stronger, in 2015!
    24. Harriet broke SDRNR marathon’s           records at the age of 91.
    A. Two      B. Three      C. Four      D. Five
    25. Why did Harriet not take part in the marathon last year?
    A. She was too old to run. B. Her sons didn’t let her run
    C. She had a bad illness. D. Nobody would like to run with her.
    26. When did Harriet begin to take part in the marathon?
    A. In 1997.         B. In 1999.  C. In 2014.      D. In 2015.
    27. Which of the following may be true?
    A. Harriet’s father or mother hasn’t had a cancer.
    B. Harriet will no longer raise money for the hospital.
    C. Harriet will not take part in the marathon next year.
    D. Harriet will take part in the marathon next year.

It’s wrongly spread that colds are caused by cold. Actually, they are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated Arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes.
During the First World War, soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches(战壕), cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds. In the Second World War, prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz Concentration Camp(奥斯维辛集中营), naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds.
At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty (通风的)room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.
If, then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter? Despite the most pains-taking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.
No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors(止痛片) such as aspirin, but all they do is to relieve the symptoms.
    28. The passage mainly discusses ________.
    A. the continued spread of common cold.
    B. the experiments on the common cold .
    C. the reason and the way people catch cold.
    D. the mistaken belief about the common cold.
    29. The writer offered _______ examples to support his argument.
       A.3         B. 4        C. 5        D. 6
    30. Arctic explorers may catch colds when ________.
    A. they are allowed to be with cold water.
  2. they are writing reports in terribly cold weather.
    C. they are working in the isolated Arctic regions.
    D. they are coming into touch again with the outside world.

31. Which of the following does not agree with the chosen passage?
A. Colds are not caused by cold.
B. The Eskimos suffer from colds all the time.
C. People suffer from colds just because they like to stay indoors.
D. A person may catch a cold by touching someone who already had one.

It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a damaged brain. Without enough blood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. More often the doctors can’t fix the damage. Sometimes they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctors might make the person worse if he operates on the brain.
Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.
Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, and then he operated on them. He made the monkeys' blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys' brains. When the brain’s temperature was 10°C, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again. After their operations the monkeys were like they had been before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.
32. The biggest difficulty in operating on the damaged brain is that________.
 A. the damage is extremely hard to fix   B. the patients are often too nervous
C. the time is too short for doctors   D. the blood-cooling machine might break down
33. The brain operation was made possible mainly by ________.
 A. taking the blood out of the brain     B. trying the operation on monkeys first
C. having the blood go through a machine   D. lowering the brain’s temperature
34. With Dr. White's new idea, the operation on the damaged brain ________.
 A. can keep the brain's blood warm          B. can last as long as 30 minutes
C. can keep the patient's brain healthy      D. can help monkeys do different jobs
35. What is the right order of the steps in the operation?
a. send the cooled blood back to the brain
b. stop the blood to the brain
c. have the blood cooled down
d. operate on the brain

I am English student studying in China. Yesterday, I go to your cinema to see a film. The film was very good, and I did not enjoy it because there were some problems in the cinema. First, the film was delayed as there was so many advertisements at the beginning. It was rather annoyed. Second, the sound of the film was such loud that I could hardly bear it. The EXIT signs could not be seen clearly, that presented potential safety problems. If something terrible should happen, it would be difficult for people to get out quick. As a visitor to you city, I’m disappointed with my experience in you cinema. I am writing the letter in the hope that you can consider these problems and to make some improvements.
