        A
Mum, Helen Clements, described how her fun family trip to Longleat Safari Park turned into a nightmare(恶梦) as their car caught fire while they were surrounded by killer beasts.
The story happened when the group reached the lions’ area during a visit to the park. Just as they came up to a group of 12 lions, smoke suddenly began to come out of the engine. Helen was so scared that she pressed the horn to ask for help from the park workers, but then flames started to appear. The family was then faced with the dilemma of staying inside the car away from the lions or escaping the deadly fire.
Fortunately, the lions were led into a night-time enclosure(围栏) by the workers as the family made their escape from the car. With the family sent to the safety of the park office, the roads were cleared of cars so the fire service could put out the fire. No one was injured in any way and no lions were hurt. Helen said that it was not the workers’fault. She said, “They were great.”
Today speaking of the experience, Helen said: “Looking back at it, we can laugh, but at that very moment it was frightening. I think, Oh my goodness. Why did it happen in the lion enclosure? Why not while we were at the penguins, or the kangaroos? When the car was filled with more and more smoke and the flames were getting bigger, I was thinking about explosions, just like in films. Luckily we didn’t think about the lions. The cars in front of us were kind of sheltering us from them, so we didn’t really see how close they were. If we had been just 50 yards further along, it would have been a very different story.”
        21. What does the underlined part “killer beasts” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
        A. The lions. B. The penguins. C. The flames. D. The kangaroos.
        22. How did Helen feel when the car caught fire?
        A. Calm. B. Frightened. C. Excited. D. Angry.
        23. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
        A. The family were taken to the hospital after the accident.
    2. The fire service cleared the cars from the road after the fire.
    3. Helen didn’t blame anyone for the accident.
    4. Helen thought the lions were great.

24. What can be inferred from the text?

  1. Helen is a very optimistic and imaginative woman.
  2. The family will never go to this park again.
  3. Helen still has nightmares about the accident today.
  4. Things would have been different if the lions were nearer.

TheNewYorkTimes recently published a report about scientists who are preparing astronauts for a trip to the Moon. The newspaper said the scientists want to make sure that their astronauts return home in good health. But there are many problems to solve before people are ready for long trips to the Moon.

Humans developed on a planet with a surface that is more than 70 percent water. Our bodies are also about 70 percent water. When there is no gravity, that water moves up toward the head, raising the pressure in the skull(头骨). Arms and legs grow weak at what is called zero gravity because they no longer need to push against the force of gravity.

Five years ago, astronauts who spent weeks in space reported a change in their eyesight. These astronauts were members of the crew on the International Space Station. Research showed a change in the shape of their eyes. Normally-round eyeballs had become flat during the time in space. The research also showed that the right eye was affected more than the left, and that men were more affected than women. Scientists could not find an explanation for the differences.

Bone loss was one of the problems first reported by astronauts returning to Earth after longer stays in space. So scientists designed exercise machines to use on the space station. Tests showed that the exercise equipment helped space travelers keep their bones almost as strong as when they left Earth.

There are other health issues for astronauts who spend a long time in space. They may have problems eating and sleeping. But the biggest health issue is exposure to radiation. On Earth, human beings are protected by the atmosphere and the planet’s magnetic field (磁场). In outer space, there is no such protection.

32. What does the underlined word“planet”in the second paragraph refer to?

  1. Moon. B. Earth. C. Mars. D. Sun.

33. What will happen to people if there is no gravity?

  1. The water in the body will move down to the feet.
  2. The pressure in the skull will increase.
  3. The brain will grow weaker.
  4. The thinking will be slower.

34. What is the biggest problem that astronauts have to face?

  1. Sleeping. B. Eating. C. Listening. D. Radiation.

35. What is the text mainly about?

  1. A report about a trip to the Moon.
  2. How to keep healthy as astronauts.
  3. Some health problems astronauts face.
  4. How to protect themselves as astronauts.

    Evaluating Sources of Health Information
Making good choices about your own health requires reasonable evaluation. A key first step in bettering your evaluation ability is to look carefully at your sources of health information. Dear Sir,

I am a student from Xinhua Middle School and I am glad to learn that you need a few more part-time English reporters. Interested in the job, I am writing to apply for it because I think I am quite fit for it. As a student, I have not only a wide range of knowledge but also a good command of English. Besides, I am so good at writing that I have ever had such a similar experience as working as a reporter for my school broadcasting station. Also I am easy-going, skilled at communicating and always willing to work with others cooperatively. I am looking forward to your timely reply and hope that I will be lucky enough to take the job.
