You may think that sailing is a difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind.
First, you must ask yourself“Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side” You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.
Let's start with the wind blowing from behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. It should be at a 90°angle to the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.
If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat. In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be at a 45°angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn't flap(摆动)It shouldn't look like a flag on a flagpole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.
Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can't go in a straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tacking. When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.
  21. What should you consider first while sailing?
ASailors' strength. BWave levels.CWind directions. DSize of sails.
22What do you have to do when sailing against the wind?
AMove in a straight line.BAllow the sail to flap.
    CLower the sail.DTack the boat.
23Where can you probably find the text?
    AIn a popular magazine.BIn a tourist guidebook.
CIn a physics textbook.DIn an official report.
    B
宁夏银川九中2016届高三上学期第一次月考英语试卷London—Having first played together as teenagers, Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai won their first Grand Slam title with a 7-6(1), 6-1 victory Saturday over Australian duo Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua in the women’s doubles final at Wimbledon.
Hsieh became the first player from Taiwan to win a Grand Slam title while Peng gave the Chinese mainland its first doubles title at a major in seven years.
“It’s very special because I don’t think tennis is popular in Taiwan,”Hsieh said. “We didn’t see many media during this tournament. We’re very proud we can win this tournament together with my good friend. It’s our first title, for Taiwan, so I think it’s a big thing in Taiwan. ”
The pair, who are both 27, played a few tournaments together as amateurs but ended their partnership after turning professional. After a seven-year hiatus, Hsieh asked Peng at the 2008 US Open if she would be up for a renewed(重建的)association.
The duo reunited by the end of that year 2008 and won their first 11 matches, claiming titles in Bali and Sydney. They lost their opening-round match in the 2009 Australian Open quarter finals against Serena and Venus Williams but now have six titles together.
Both Peng and Hsieh play two-handed shots on both sides, like Marion Bartoli, who won the Wimbledon singles title on Saturday.
“It’s probably the first time two-handed players win the singles and the doubles,”Peng said. Peng and Hsieh said they opted for this unorthodox style of play because they were too small to hold their rackets with one hand when they were kids.

My father was Chief engineer of a merchant ship, which was sunk in World War II. The book Night of the U-boats told the story.
Memories

In September, 1940, my mother, sister and I went to Swansea, where my father’s ship was getting ready to sail. We brought him a family photograph to be kept with him at all times and keep him safe.

Then I remembered my mother lying face down, sobbing. She had heard from a friend that the ship had been sunk by a torpedo(雷).

I can remember the arrival of the telegram,Which in those days always brought bad news. My grandmother opened it. It read, “Safe, Love Ted.”

My most vivid memory was being woken and brought down to sit on my father’s knee, his arm in a bandage.

He was judged unfit to return to sea and took a shore job in Glasgow for the rest of the war. For as long as I can remember, he had a weak heart. Mother said it was caused by the torpedoes. He said it was because of the cigarettes. Whichever, he died suddenly in his early 50s.

Ten years later I read Night of the U-boats and was able to complete the story.

Torpedo

One torpedo struck the ship. Father was in the engine room, where the third engineer was killed. He shut down the engines to slow the ship making it easier for it to be abandoned.

By the time he got on deck he was alone. Every lifeboat was gone except one which had been stuck . When he tried to cut it free, it swung against the ship, injuring his hand and arm. He had no choice but to jump—still with the photograph in his pocket.

Three days later, he and other survivors were safe in Glasgow. All 23 with him signed the back of the photograph.

In my room is the book and the photograph. Often, glass in hand, I have wondered how I would have dealt with an explosion, a sinking ship, a jump into a vast ocean and a wait for rescue? Lest(以免)we forget, I have some more whisky and toast the heroes of the war.

32. We can infer that the mother and children went to Swansea ________.
A. to see the father off B. to meet a friend
C. to take a family photo D. to enjoy the sailing of the ship

33. What did the author learn about the father from the telegram?
A. He had arrived in Glasgow. B. His knee was broken.
C. His ship had been sunk.D.He was still alive.

34. What can we know about the author’s father after his ship was attacked?
A. He lost his armB. He repaired the engines.
C. He was the last to leave the ship. D. He managed to take a lifeboat.

35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A group of forgotten heroes B. A ship engineer’s wartime experience.
C. A book describing a terrifying battle. D. A merchant’s memories of a sea rescue.

You often find somebody who works around you complaining all the time, don’t you?

36About 70% of Americans say being around nonstop complainers sometimes has a bad influence on them. Luckily, here are 4 tips to help form positive patterns.

1. Self-awareness

When a negative thought pops into your mind, immediately correct it. Instead of telling yourself “That’s a nice shirt, but I can’t afford it,” change the message to “That will look great with my black pants when I can afford it.” 37

Of course, everyone complains sometimes. But the less frequently you complain, the better you will feel.

2. Distance yourself

38 Excuse yourself and go somewhere quiet, somewhere outdoors in the fresh air. Think of something pleasant before returning. You have to take this seriously because negative people can and will pull you into the quicksand(困境).

3. Don’t try to change complainers

If you find yourself trapped in a group of complainers in a meeting or at a social event, simply choose silence. Let their words bounce off you while you think of something else. Attempting to stop the complaining can make you a target. 39 If someone says, “I hate Mondays, weekends are too short,” try to think, “I’m glad I rested up over the weekend, so I’m ready to make some improvement on that big project.”

4.40

When someone is shouting at you angrily, throw the responsibility back at them by asking, “So what do you intend to do about it?” In most cases, complainers don’t really want a solution. They just want to speak them out. If you make them aware that they themselves have to find the solutions, they will leave you alone and find someone else to complain to. If so, you will be happy.

A. Find solutions

B. Change responsibility

C. You have got a lot of company.

D. By doing this, it will lead to positive behaviors.

E. But you can redirect the discussion in your own mind.

F. Whenever possible, escape from negative conversations.

G. You will never know what they are going to talk about.
