Jerome Kern is often called the father of American musical theater. Kern is remembered for the hundreds of songs he wrote for musical plays and movies. To a great extent, he led the development of the first truly American theater music.

Jerome Kern began his career as a songwriter in theaters in London and New York City. Success came quickly. By the early 1920s, Kern was a successful young composer for Broadway musical comedies. He worked with each song until he was satisfied that the music was perfect. American musical plays at that time were still usually copied from European ones. Kern wanted to try something completely new. He thought a musical play should be a real work of art, not just a collection of songs and dances. He thought songs should help move the action of the play along, by showing a person's feelings. Kern wanted to do a truly American musical, with real American characters and real situations.

In 1927, he found the story he wanted. It was the book"Show Boat" by American writer Edna Ferber."Show Boat" takes place in the 1880s on a passenger steam boat that travels along the Mississippi River. The boat is called a show boat because singers and dancers entertain the passengers. The captain of the show boat has a daughter who is a singer on the boat. She falls in love with a man who earns his money by gambling with cards.

The story dealt with some unusually serious issues for a musical. It showed the hard lives of African-Americans in the South. And it showed marriage between people of different races, which was against the law at that time. Although serious in places,"Show Boat" was not a tragedy. The public and critics loved it."Show Boat" became the greatest work of American musical theater .Music critics said Kern's effect on musical theater was revolutionary. It was Kern's music that made the show a great success, which has been performed thousands of times all over the world.

24. The passage above is likely to appear in ___________.

  1. a poster B. a radio program C. a notice D. a news report

25. According to the passage, Jerome Kern can be described as being ___________.

  1. adventurous and sympathetic B. brave and kind

C. productive and creative D. hardworking and determined

26. The story of “Show Boat” is _________.

27. The purpose of the passage is to _____________.

  1. introduce Jerome Kern’s life and his career
  2. explain how Jerome Kern’s truly American musical was created
  3. tell us the unusual story of “Show Boat”
  4. show the differences between American musical plays and European ones

C

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment . As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.

It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and under-bushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results innumerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.

Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shutout sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.

What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

28. What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean?

  1. Improving the quality. B. Worsening the state.

C. Fixing the time. D. Deciding the conditions.

29. The passage is developed mainly by_________.

  1. showing the effect and then explaining the causes
  2. giving examples
  3. pointing out similarities and differences
  4. describing the changes in time order

30. What is the passage mainly about?

  1. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.
  2. The eating habit of African elephants.
  3. Disappearance of African elephants.
  4. The effect of African elephants’ search for food.

31. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?

  1. They are home to many endangered animals.
  2. They result from the destruction of rain forests.
  3. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.
  4. They provide food mainly for African elephants.

D

When you bite into a loaf of bread, you’re eating a little slice of history, with roots that stretch back for millennia. But this basic and important food, which has dominated tables for thousands of years, is in a dangerous decline.

According to a study, 32 percent of the purchased bread is being dumped in the UK. And in France – a country whose breads are internationally well-known – young people are eating 30percent less than a decade ago.

Traditionally, bread has been a cornerstone of many cultures around the world. Wherever wheat was grown, bread was sure to follow. Its roles were just as varied as its origins. Bread could be used as an appetizer, a palate cleanser, a post-meal palate cleaner – even as an entire meal itself. As its popularity grew, so too did its symbolic value. Christianity adopted bread as are presentation of Christ during religious ceremonies. “Breaking bread” with someone became a common symbol of friendship. The French even used to bring baguettes(法棍面包) home as a symbol of love to the family.

But recently, the world’s love with bread came to fade. Some guess that the fast pace of modern life is changing people’s eating habits. Others believe it’s a reflection of health concerns.

Bread is rich in complex carbohydrates(碳水化合物), a fact that could alienate(使疏远) anyone who practices a low-carbon or gluten-free(不含麸质物的) lifestyle.

The shift against bread is also associated with its mass production. Extra yeast(酵母) and additives(添加剂) are added to the dough, to extend its shelf life. In the process, bread ends up being blanched(变白) and nutritious stripped.

But dedicated bakers around the world have rushed forward to rescue bread’s good reputation. They say no to mass production in favor of baking flavorful loaves the old-fashioned way. British baker Mark Newman is a good example. His loaves take up to 18 hours from start to finish. “In terms of nutrition and eating satisfaction, a handmade loaf of real bread and mass-produced bread are completely different products.” he said. Artisanal bakers(手工面包师) hope to build on the popular enthusiasm to grow their industry. With a little luck – and some fresh, whole grains –bread might return to its traditional glory.

32. From the traditional view, bread ___________.

  1. could not be served before a big meal
  2. could be mass produced
  3. was not used for religious purposes.
  4. symbolized some close relationships
    33. In the mass production of bread, what’s the purpose of overusing yeast and additives?
    1. To blanch bread. B. To make bread more nutritious.
      C. To help bread keep longer. D. To speed the process of production.
      34. What is the structure of the passage? (○=paragraph)
      A. ①→②→③④→⑤⑥ B.①②→③→④⑤→⑥
      C.①②→③④→⑤→⑥ D.①→②③→④⑤⑥
      35. What is the main idea that the writer wants to convey?
      A. Bread plays an important role throughout the world.
      B. Bread is becoming less consumed.
      C. Handmade bread enjoys great popularity nowadays.
      D. Bread has a long history as main food dominating tables.
      第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
      根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Most students have had experienced or suffered from procrastination( 拖延症). Here are some tips to help you reduce procrastination.
      Set Goals
Students often procrastinate because they think that they can put off the work for a while and enjoy their time at the moment. 36 , when the deadline becomes one day away and the essay has yet to be started. In order to stay on track, you should constantly set and update goals. It can be beneficial to mark all deadlines in a planner and think about how much time you need to meet them all. Update your plan for the upcoming two weeks so that you do not get overwhelmed, and continue to update as other assignments and events arise. Additionally, make a daily schedule in order to reach necessary goals before going to bed.
      Reward yourself
It can become extremely difficult to work for hours straight in order to finish school work. In order to keep productivity, set breaks at the end of a period of time or once you finish a section of
your work so that you can reward yourself with some deserved, scheduled, and controlled procrastination-like activities37 . Breaks like these are proven to increase productivity and keep you focused, and they will make the process of studying much more bearable!
Remind yourself of what you’re doing
Sometimes you may begin to think that what you are working on has little to do with what you ultimately want to do. You may consider some work or a class pointless and not useful to your further studies. However, when these thoughts arise ,remind yourself what the ultimate goal of your schooling is. Remind yourself why you wanted to go to school and take this program in the first place.38.
      Turn off the Internet
      39. If you do not need the Internet to do your work, turn it off so that you are not receiving notifications while completing your work, and you are not as tempted to search for sites. The same goes for your cell phone; you can take a break from being connected to the cyber world in order to do your school work. If you feel the need to check messages and websites often, set times when you will allow yourself to do so rather than constantly staying connected.
      40
Being productive for all hours of every day does not work – you do need breaks, and as a student you are entitled to have a lot of fun. So, in order to balance productivity and amusement, plan times to go out with friends or do something relaxing. But ideally, social and relaxation plans should be made for after a significant portion of work is complete. This way, while you are working, you can keep in mind that once you are finished your work you can go out and not worry about your assignments.
      A. Enjoy every minute in school
      B. Have something to look forward to
      C. The Internet has become an essential part of our daily life
      D. You may understand why you should focus on completing your work
  5. This thought tends to make things worse, though
  6. Some of the most common distractions are those found on the Internet
  7. You may have coffee with a friend, cook, or watch an episode of a television show

Dear Alex,

How is everything going recently? I am writing to you in the hope that you can recommend a hotel tome.

To experience different cultures and broaden my horizons, I will visit London during the winter holiday. When I am staying there, I want a single room with a private bathroom for five nights, from Feb 8to Feb 12. I hope that the hotel you recommend to me should be located near the bus station so that I can take a bus conveniently. In addition, to keep in touch with my family and friends, I hope I can gain access to the Internet in the room.

I would appreciate it if you could help me. I am looking forward to your early reply.

Yours sincerely,

Wang Lin

录音原文:

Text 1

M: I need to use the restroom, but the door is locked. No one is in there because I already knocked on the door.

Can you give me the key?

W: Well, the restroom is for customers only. You’ll need to buy something before I can give it to you.

Text 2

M: When does the play start? My ticket says 7:30 p.m.

W: Well, that’s when it officially starts. They actually check tickets fifteen minutes earlier. And if you’re not seated when the lights go down five minutes before that, they won’t let you in.

Text 3

W: I play basketball three times a week. What’s your favorite sport, Patrick?

M: I played baseball as a young kid, but I haven’t picked up a bat in years. I’m much more into tennis these days.

Text 4

M: I wish Uncle Jim wouldn’t talk with his mouth full of food.

W: Well, I love his jokes and that makes up for his lack of manners.

Text 5

W: How much did you pay for this new fridge?

M: Oh, it was a little over a thousand dollars, plus tax. It was much more expensive than our washing machine, but not nearly as much as our bed!

Text 6

W: I can’t believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Who usually does the cooking in your family?

M: My mother and my two aunts don’t let anyone else do anything except for the salad and the drinks. That includes all the sauces, desserts, and place settings.

W: Wow. It sounds like they take Turkey Day pretty seriously.

M: Listen, if Thanksgiving were an Olympic sport, they would be kicked out for winning too many gold medals! What about you?

W: Well, my parents and I do everything together. It’s better than one person trying to do too much.

Text 7

W: Oh, there is nothing better than a nice cold glass of ice water on a hot day.

M: You know, cold water always gives me stomachaches.

W: Really? I’ve never had that problem. I’ve been drinking ice water since I was little.

M: Hmm. When I was a small boy, my grandmother never let my mom give me anything other than warm water. W: Even in the summer?

M: Yes. Every once in a while, my dad would take me to get some ice cream, but my grandmother was never happy about that. I think it was the sugar that she didn’t like…

Text 8

M: Is it me, or is it really hard to understand this speaker?

W: You’re right. It’s not that he has an accent like some of the other speakers from another country. It’s just that

he is speaking too softly. Do you think it would be rude to ask him to turn his microphone up a little bit?

M: I don’t think he’s wearing one. Either that or he’s turned it off.

W: That’s crazy. There must be four hundred people here.

M: This part of the conference has turned into such a waste of time. Maybe we should leave and try to find another lecture.

W: I can’t do that. I come here specifically to hear this guy’s speech. I think I’ll just go up to him at the end of the speech and try to ask him some questions.

M: Good idea. Would you mind if I followed you up there? It might be the only way to get anything out of this hour.

W: No problem.

Text 9

W: Excuse me. Can you tell me where I can find dresses for teenagers?

M: Yes, they’re on the left, next to the purses. But don’t you think you should look for something, uh…a bit more mature?

W: Oh, no…it’s not for me. I’m looking for a present for my niece. She’s turning 16 next week, and she’s having

a big party.

M: Oh, I remember when my daughter was that age. She’s about to graduate college now.

W: How wonderful! Yeah, Elizabeth is looking at schools right now. We’ll probably take her on a tour of the East

Coast colleges sometime in the fall. She lives with my brother and his wife in Oregon.

M: There are some schools there that offer good programs, but they probably don’t get the scenery like we do here

on the East Coast. I’ve always liked seeing the seasons change. I went to the University of Pennsylvania. What about you?

W: I went to Brown University.

M: Great! So where does your niece want to go to school?

W: Oh, I think Harvard, Yale, and the University of Chicago are her top three choices.

M: Well, those are all fantastic schools with a long history, but I think it’s a good idea to take her to see all those places up close and in person. You can’t get a sense of a college until you set foot on campus.

W: I couldn’t agree more! Well, I’d better get back to my shopping!

Hello, I’m Rachel Joyce. I’m so happy to be here today at the Claremont Library. I’ve traveled all the way from England, and it’s truly wonderful to visit the United States! This is the first stop on my book tour. I’m off to Australia next! Before I take any questions, let me tell you a bit about myself. My new novel, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, was recently published in 2014. The book is a companion to my first novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which follows a man named Harold Fry as he goes in search of his old friend, Queenie Hennessy, in hopes of saying goodbye before she dies. The novel was published in 2012. It was almost chosen for the Commonwealth Book Prize and the Man Booker Prize. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy is Queenie’s side of the story as she waits for Harold. I’ve also written many radio plays for BBC Radio Four, and in 2007, I won the Tinnis wood Award for my radio play To Be a Pilgrim. I have also won the UK National Book Award for New Writer of the Year. Before I was a writer, I was an actress in theatre and on TV. I’ll take questions from the audience now.
