The family lost touch and as years passed only a single letter gave any information about her. The information was enough for a WHT reader to recognize Margery and put the family back in touch.
John, 67, said he had been searching for a long time and a friend suggested writing to the paper.
“That’s the one that made it, the letter to your paper a few months back,” he said. “It’s like a dream come true. The last time we ever heard from Margery was in 1953 after the floods. She wrote home to know if we were all right. My sister Dorothy wrote back, but Margery had moved again and never got the letter.
Having retired from his job as gardener at Park House, Mr Hannant decided to take action once and for all.
He and his wife Doreen traveled to Margery’s home in Chelwood Avenue, Hatfield, which she shares with her husband Jack Cooke.
Now 88, she is recovering after several months in hospital, but immediately recognized her brother. John said, “At first it was exciting. It’s something I never thought was going to happen.” As well as finding his sister, John has also discovered he now has a nephew and a niece.

Recently in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a door-to-debt salesman.
I once read a saying. “If somebody wants something of yours, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don’t, you may be treated as coldly as winter.” You may consider this an exaggeration (夸张), but if you are a salesman, it is clearly correct.
You would never have it to be so true if you hadn’t been a salesman. You needn’t stand doubtful looks and unfriendly comments; you needn’t listen to something completely wrong and nod to say that it was quite right; you needn’t worry about being refused time after time; you needn’t always keep patience and a smile; you needn’t repeat the sentences over and over again; you needn’t talk to somebody you dislike.
I did this work for a month, then I decided to give it up. Apart from the reasons above, I found I was paying much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting worse.
Even worse, I hadn’t enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don’t think it is worth doing such a thing for. Even though I was earning money, it came at a great cost.
Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about excellent students who do part-time work while also keeping high scores in class. But according to my experiences, part-time can have some strong negative influences on study.
Most students don’t view the relationship between study and work correctly. In my opinion, if it isn’t a must for financial reasons, students should be careful about taking up a part-time job.
  28. What cause the writer to give up his part-time job?
    1. His grades were getting worse.
    2. He did the job for a month.
    3. He was once a salesman.

  29. Which of the following words is the closest meaning to the underlined word"sacrificing"?

  30. The writer thought________. .
    1. Doing a part - time job was unnecessary.
    2. Part-time jobs had good effect upon study
    3. It was hard to deal with the relationship between study and work
      D. Part-time jobs would be good for every college student
  31. What would be the best title for the text?
    1. Part-time Jobs Are Useful.
    2. Part-time Jobs Can Cost much.
    3. Students Shouldn’t Take Part-time Jobs.
    4. Part-time Jobs Are Important to Many Students.
      D
Go to church, then have a big lunch, then go out to play while mum does the housework. That was a typical British Sunday in the 1960s. But things now could not be more different.
Some British sociologists recently studied the typical British Sunday. They found that people get up later and do less housework than they did 40 years ago. They are far more likely to be out shopping or enjoying themselves than cooking Sunday lunch.
Sunday mornings were busy 40 years ago. Most women caught up on their weekly housework and cooked a nice lunch. They seldom allowed themselves any “leisure” until afternoon, after the dishes were cleaned. Then there would be another rush to the table between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm for tea.
But now, Britons can have brunch at the restaurant. Fewer people bother to cook themselves.
“You only have two free days a week. You don’t want to have to waste one because there is nothing to do but watch boring TV,” said Elizabeth Biggs, 25, a producer in London.
“On Saturday you are recovering from the week,” Biggs added. “Sundays are the last chance for the weekend — you want to get as much as you can out of the day before you have to go back to work.”
In the past, British women usually did their shopping during the week, while the husband was at work. “Now men seem to do that as much as women,” said Jonathan Gershuny, a professor who took part in the study.
Men also do more housework now on Sundays. Back in the 1960s, men were far more likely to spend Sundays out of the house — at the pub or playing football — before lunch.
  32. Many Britons have brunch at the restaurant because ______.
    1. They have no time to cook at home. B. They get up too late.
      C. They won’t bother to cook themselves. D. They will go to church.
  33. Which of the following is NOT true?
    1. Britons used to go to church on Sundays.
    2. Britons usually had a big lunch at home.
    3. British women did their shopping on Sundays in the past.
    4. British men did little housework at home in the past.
  34. The underlined word “leisure” in Para 3 means ______.
    1. houseworkB. shopping C. lunch D. free time
  35. The text mainly tells us ______.
    1. What Britons did on Sundays
    2. Why Britons go shopping on Sundays
    3. How Britons spend their holidays
    4. The changes of the ways the Britons spend their Sundays

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项

It should come as no surprise that there is a strong link between self-esteem(自尊) and the health of our relationships. 36 You don’t have to become a better person, or set unrealistic goals that will never get done. But once you love yourself, you are ready to start giving everyone else more reasons to love you too. If you want to improve relationships with others, then I highly suggest you start here.

37

It may seem opposite to loving yourself, but pouring yourself into other people is a form of sharing your love with them. Numerous studies have shown that acts of service and charity benefit the giver more than the receiver, at least in the sense of positive and emotional gains.

Exercise and eat healthily

38 Being fit physically makes us fit emotionally, improving our moods alongside our health. Going to the gym and eating right gives us energy and relieves stress. As a result, we feel good about ourselves, and these positive feelings carry over to the people who are around us.

Keep your eyes up.

One of the best ways to improve relationships is to practice eye contact. When you look down, you are telling others that you are being submissive(顺从的) to them. This is how someone is able to determine instantly whether or not they can walk all over someone else. 39

Create something

Whether you’re a painter, writer, construction worker or professional singer, creating something that is wholly yours is self-love. You don’t have to create something out of thin air; it’s as easy as doing something you love to do better than everyone else.40

  1. Serve others
  2. Be self-aware.
  3. Loving yourself is about accepting who you are.
  4. Love yourself by showing love to your body.
  5. That sense of accomplishment in your work plays a huge part in personal growth.
  6. What you may not realize is that this can really damage your relationships with others.
  7. The result is that you aren’t respecting yourself, and you’re letting others disrespect you.
