There are lots of outdoor activities in London. The following are four of them.

Bird-watching in Barnes

The London Wetland Centre is the best place to go bird-watching in the capital. Every day there is free guided tour at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and you can join the keepers for feeding time at 3 p.m. A real highlight is a series of events in which you can hear the dawn chorus of birds, and experience wildlife photography courses, enjoying being with other small mammals and amphibians(两栖动物) that also live at the centre.

▲+44(0)20-8409 4400, open daily 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Rollerblading(滚轴溜冰) in Battersea Park

Battersea Park is a fascinating place, with views of the Thames, an art gallery by the lake, and a children's zoo. Instead of exploring on foot or by bike, try eight wheels instead. There is a free group skate every dry Saturday at 10:30 a.m., starting at the Japanese Peace Pagoda. There are no hills or traffic, so it's suitable for children and beginners.

▲+44(0)20-8409 7559, open daily 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Kayaking(皮划艇运动) at West Reservoir Centre

West Reservoir is a relatively unknown water sports centre. Visitors can sign up for a sailing or kayaking course, or try a free kayak session with the Castle Canoe Club on Tuesday evenings (excluding winter) and Sunday mornings.

▲+44(0)20-8442 8116, open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Swimming at Brockwell Lido

Built in 1937, Brockwell Lido was restored to its former glory in 2007 and now has a great poolside café, which opens for breakfast and turns into a bar and restaurant in the evening. The Olympic-sized pool is open from April to October, with swimming tickets starting at 2.7 pounds per person.

▲+44(0)20-7274 3088, open Mon.-Fri. 6:30 a.m.-10 p.m., weekend 7:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m.

As a Malaysian, I was lucky to get the chance to run Beijing Marathon this year, one of the top-class marathon races in China. I enjoyed it in my own way, but it may be a little different compared with my fellow Chinese runners.

This race was my 87th marathon, if I take into account some ultramarathon events. I have been to a few places to experience other marathons besides my home country, Malaysia, like Chicago, Tokyo, Gold Coast, Bali, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Borneo, Kuching, Songkhla, Phuket etc. So, I can compare Beijing marathon with my various experiences.

Since this year's Beijing Marathon was the starting station for China Major Marathon League and also Asia Major Marathon League, the organizer invested a lot of effort, which I recorded with my own eyes and my camera, so that I could share the nice experience with the runners in my home country and to show how maximum effort should be made to make the races successful.

From my view, the wonderful experience starts from the marathon expo. The expo not only manages the crowd, but also limits the entry tickets to only runners with valid passes. What's more, there are many services inside expo, like free photo taking and printing with make-up, and free race T-shirts printed with different motivational words. The organizer was so nice to put out all the previous Beijing marathon souvenirs and magazines on display so that we could read the history and background of Beijing Marathon.

On the race day, though the event started at 7:30 a.m., the chilly weather was still acceptable as I was wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt with the race T-shirt outside, which was good as it blocked the cold wind in the early morning and the sun in the afternoon.

When I returned to Malaysia and shared about 1,200 of Beijing marathon pictures and the experience, many of Malaysian runners showed their interest towards the race in the next year, but I told them, they needed to pray for luck during ballot selection.

Still, thanks to the organizer and all volunteers who made their effort for runners to enjoy the 42.195 km marathon race, I would rate this year the best compared to previous Beijing Marathons.

  1. 24. From the passage, we know the author________.
  1. has been to many foreign cities besides Beijing
  2. has little experience of running a marathon before
  3. has never come to China before this race in Beijing
  4. has the same opinion on this race with Chinese runners

【解析】从文章第二段可以看出作者去过很多外国城市,所以A项正确。

(D)25. The author would share the experience with the runners in his home country mainly because ________.

  1. the race was the starting station for major leagues
  2. he took lots of photos with his camera
  3. the organizer invested a lot of money
  4. he wanted to emphasize the efforts behind the race

【解析】从文章第三段最后部分“to show how maximum effort should be made to make the races successful”可知D项正确。

(C)26. The following were the wonderful aspects of the marathon expo EXCEPT ______.

  1. the entry tickets were only for runners with valid passes
  2. there were some services inside the marathon expo
  3. runners could get the souvenirs and magazines for free
  4. free race T-shirts printed with words were provided

【解析】从文章第四段可知,A、B、D项均为这个马拉松展览会吸引人的地方,而C项理解错误。

(C)27. What was the reaction of the Malaysian runners towards Beijing Marathon?

  1. They ignored it. B. They suspected it.

C. They expected it. D. They assessed it.

【解析】从文章倒数第二段的“many of Malaysian runners showed their interest towards the race in the next year”可知他们对于北京马拉松是很期待的。

C

A generation ago young people longed to become lawyers and doctors. Now they desire to be the next Oscar winner or famous pop star. But one university psychologist has pointed out that this is playing__havoc__with our self-image and sense of self-worth.

Over recent years people around the world have been suffering from an increasing fear of their own “insignificance”, according to Dr. Carlo Strenge of Tel Aviv University.

He began a project on the phenomenon 10 years ago, after noticing an increase of fear in his own patients. His findings, presented in a new book, notes hundreds of research projects that have recorded an unprecedented(前所未有的) increase in levels of anxiety and depression.

By using a wide-ranging framework Dr. Strenger thinks he has given the accurate cause. “The impact of the global entertainment network on the individual is to blame,” he said. “A new species—global man—is born and we are defined by our close connection to the global entertainment network, which has turned ranking and evaluating people according to wealth and fame into an obsession (狂热).”

As humans we naturally measure ourselves by those around us, but now we live in a “global village” where we are comparing ourselves with the most “significant” people in the world—and finding ourselves not good enough.

He added that in the past being a lawyer or doctor was a very reputable profession. Today, even high achievers constantly fear that they are insignificant when they compare themselves to success stories in the media. “This creates highly unstable personality and an unstable society,” Dr. Strenger said.

In his book, TheFearofInsignificance:SearchingforMeaningintheTwentyfirstCentury,Dr. Strenger attracts new pop-spiritualism that promises instant change and instant relief. Instead of solving an existential unease, such resources just create ever growing disappointment.

Instead, Dr. Strenger says people should stop measuring their achievement through the cultural fantasies of rich and famous people.

The remedy (治疗方法) is a process that he calls “active self-acceptance” through a continuing search for self-knowledge through life. The fear of insignificance can only be overcome through strong individual and cultural identity over and above measurable achievement. “People should invest time and thought in their worldviews in the same way they invest in medical studies and law school,” Dr. Strenger advises.

(C)28. What does the underlined part “playing havoc with” in the first paragraph probably mean?

  1. Determining. B. Improving. C. Damaging. D. Protecting.
    【解析】分析上下语境可得知答案。
  2. 29. According to the text, what leads people to feel insignificant?
  1. Too much pressure from career. B. Global entertainment network.

C. Lack of support from family. D. Financial problems.

(D)30. What should people do to remove the fear of “insignificance”?

  1. They should stay away from famous people.
  2. They should try to make their dreams come true.
  3. They should compare themselves with successful people around.
  4. They should take time to develop correct worldviews.

【解析】根据文章最后一个自然段“People should invest time and thought in their worldviews in the same way they invest in medical studies and law school,” Dr. Strenger advises.可得知答案。

  1. 31. In which column of a magazine may the article appear?

It is the ideal way for travelers to ensure they wake up with the perfect view—a portable eco-capsule that can be set up anywhere in the world. The innovative, egg-shaped pods ensure travelers can camp in the most extreme corners of the world, with all the luxuries of a hotel room.

Looking like something in a sci-fi movie, the pods are equipped with solar panels, and a retractable wind turbine, which guarantee solar and wind energy as its power. In this way, the tiny home can let you live comfortably wherever you travel. It even has its own shower and toilet, sleeping area for two, and a small kitchen. It may look like camping, but at least with the eco-capsule you can look forward to a hot shower and running water on your travels.

The 3306 lb pods can be transported on your travels in a sea-container or can be towed on a trailer, meaning the possibilities are endless.

Bratislava-based Nice Architects are behind the extraordinary sleepers and said they initially designed them for people who stay in the nature for a long time. However, it quickly became apparent that they could be opened up to the wider public and even used in urban areas to combat high rent, and placed on roofs for studio space, or living quarters. The eco-capsule can serve as a cottage, a pop-up hotel or even as a charging station for electric cars.

The capsules could even be quickly imported for housing for emergency teams who have been quickly deployed to help with natural disasters that have destroyed nearby infrastructure. Described by the website as a ‘Swiss-army knife—it packs everything you need’,the self-contained unit can sustain long periods of time without external resources.

The 86 sqft pods are able to sleep two people for up for a year and for those worried about a cold night's sleep, the capsule has a thick layer of efficient heat isolation and energy restoration which significantly reduce heat losses.

The pod is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions due to its innovative design and materials used. No wonder the Nice Architects are so confident about its prospect and the producers are receiving heavy orders.

  1. 32. Where does the eco-capsule get power?
  1. From solar panels and a retractable wind turbine.
  2. From a portable battery.
  3. From an electric generator.
  4. From its shower.

【解析】根据文章第二自然段“Looking like something in a sci-fi movie, the pods are equipped with solar panels, and a retractable wind turbine, which guarantee solar and wind energy as its power.”可得知答案。

(C)33. Whom may be the eco-capsule initially designed for?

  1. Campers. B. Office ladies.

C. Field biologists. D. Homeless people.

【解析】根据文章第四自然段“Bratislava-based Nice Architects are behind the extraordinary sleepers and said they initially designed them for people who stay in the nature for a long time.”可推断出答案。

(D)34. Why don't the eco-capsule's users worry about coldness during their night sleep?

  1. Because there is a retractable wind-turbine in it.
  2. Because it has an air conditioner in it.
  3. Because it is a self-contained unit.
  4. Because it is equipped with a thick layer to reduce heat losses.

【解析】根据文章倒数第二自然段“…the capsule has a thick layer of efficient heat isolation and energy restoration which significantly reduce heat losses.”可得知答案。

(B)35. What does the designer view the eco-capsule's future market?

  1. Negative. B. Optimistic. C. Worried. D. Doubtful.

【解析】根据文章最后一个自然段“No wonder the Nice Architects are so confident about its prospect and the producers are receiving heavy orders.”可得知答案。

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

All animals are part of the food chain: they are listed on someone else's menu and always run the risk of ending up as someone else's lunch, dinner or snack. 36.__D__

Many animals have adapted to their environment in such a way that they can hide better. Having the right colour can make a big difference. 37.__F__ Some can change colour very quickly, even in a few seconds, making it more difficult for other animals to find them. 38.__C__ Some insects look just like a small stick and can easily hide in a tree or bush.

If it is too late to hide or run away, an animal must use other methods to survive an attack. One type of snake that lives in Texas has developed an interesting way to defend itself. If it is attacked, it first makes itself look bigger and pretends to be a dangerous snake. If that doesn't work, the snake uses another trick: it rolls over, opens its mouth and acts as if it were dead. The snake is such a good actor that it seems quite dead. 39.__G__ However, if you roll it back on its stomach, it will roll over on its back again in order to look dead.

40.__E__ Many animals stay together in large groups and use sounds and body language to warn each other if they see or hear something suspicious. Some animals even work together with other species to stay safe. The birds you often see on the back of a water buffalo have an important job: they help warn the buffalo of danger.

  1. Useful body parts help other animals and insects a lot.
  2. Like human beings, animals often try to hide or run away when they are being attacked.
  3. Other animals and insects have a body shape that helps them hide.
  4. To survive in the wild, many animals have developed clever ways to escape from or avoid danger.
  5. The best way to stay safe is to develop a way to receive an early warning when danger comes.
  6. Many animals have the same or similar colour as their environment.
  7. If someone picks it up, it hangs like a rope and doesn't move.

“Many animals have the same or similar colour as their environment”是通过举例子解释前一句,因此综合分析我们可知F正确。

38. 上下文过渡句。这一段介绍动物通过不同的办法——颜色,外形——隐藏自己。“Some insects look just like a small stick and can easily hide in a tree or bush.”这一句是对前一句的进一步解读,由此可知C正确。

39. 细节支撑句。从该段的结构分析“However, if you roll it back on its stomach, it will roll over on its back again in order to look dead.”,“However”暗示上文与之不同的情况,因此39空选择不难判断G正确。

40. 段落主旨句。由下文中的“to warn each other”“they help warn the buffalo of danger”可知E正确。

DearPeter

Yourletterreachedmewithpleasure.I'msohappythattheForeignCulturessectioninournewspaperwillrecommendChinesetraditionalculture.

From my perspective, there is no denying that Confucius is the most representative symbol of Chinese culture. As a philosopher, Confucius not only represents the traditional Chinese culture, but has been influencing us Chinese people since ancient times. Nowadays we can find lots of Confucius institutes around the world, which provide platforms for the foreigners to learn about Chinese culture.

Undoubtedly, culture is a decisive factor for social development. As a country with a long history, China is rich in civilization and culture. To promote Chinese culture, we are supposed to provide various cultural exchange activities. What's more, establishing Confucius institutes all over the world is also a good idea. Meanwhile, attracting more foreign visitors to China to experience Chinese culture will have a far-reaching impact.

M: Have you seen Lee recently?

W: He must be home by now. I saw him leave on his bike half an hour ago.

Text 2

W: So when does the flying class begin on Tuesday?

M: On Tuesday you'll join the other beginning students first for series of lectures at 7:30 in Building 8. Then your flying class will begin at 9:00.

Text 3

M: Susan, where are you going now?

W: I'm going to a lecture given by Professor King.

M: How do you like his lectures?

W: Wonderful, but it's hard to find an empty seat so I have to hurry.

Text 4

W: I want to look at this sweater. How much does it cost?

M: One is fourteen dollars, but you'll save five dollars if you buy two.

Text 5

M: How about the coat you just tried on? Don't you like it?

W: Well, I like the color and the fabric. And it is really nice and reasonably priced. I would buy it if they had one in my size.

Text 6

W: Excuse me, may I meet Mr. Robbins?

M: Is that Mr. Robbins in the marketing department?

W: Yes, it is.

M: Oh, his office isn't on this floor. We're on the seventh floor. So you must go upstairs for three more.

W: What's his office number?

M: I don't know it exactly. I only know it is next to the manager's room.

Text 7

W: Honey, how long have we been living here?

M: About 10 years. What's wrong?

W: I am thinking about redecorating our house.

M: That would cost a lot of money. But we do need to do some changes to the house.

W: Right. What about repainting the living room in yellow?

M: Good idea. I like the countryside style.

W: Great minds think the same. And we can also ask someone to draw a picture on the wall.

M: It sounds great. And the curtain should be changed too.

W: OK. Maybe we should make a blueprint first.

Text 8

M: Hi, Melissa! How are you doing?

W: I'm so stressed! I don't know which school or major I should choose!

M: Don't worry. You have plenty of time to decide.

W: Actually, I don't. If I want to get grants and scholarships to help me pay for the tuition, I need to apply by Monday.

M: Oh, I see. Well, let me see if I can help you. What's your favorite subject?

W: I like English, math, art and music.

M: OK. Which one do you like best?

W: I guess I'd have to say English. I usually do pretty well in English classes.

M: In which subject do you get your highest grade?

W: Actually, that would have to be math.

M: What kind of job do you want to get when you graduate?

W: I don't know. All I know is that I want to make lots of money!

M: Since you are a bit unsure, I'd suggest taking both math and English classes in your first semester to see which you enjoy more. You can always change your mind.

W: That's a good idea.

Text 9

M: Have you ever eaten here before, Betty?

W: Only in the evenings. I didn't know that they served breakfast until now.

M: That's what the coffee shop is famous for. People have been coming here for over 60 years for breakfast before going to the university football and basketball games. It's a tradition.

W: Oh, what's good here?

M: The best is their French toast. There are all different kinds of ways to make them.

W: Can you describe the process of French toast made to me? I'd like to know much about it.

M: They take pieces of common bread and dip them in eggs. Then they bake them, and when it's done they spread some powdered sugar and top everything with fresh fruit. It's delicious.

W: I think I will try it.

M: OK. Since this is your first visit here this morning, I'll buy your breakfast.

W: I really appreciate you.

M: It's glad for me to have breakfast with you, too.

W: Me, too. If I have a good chance next time, I will treat you.

M: Thanks a lot.

If you are like millions of busy people, you want to get your work done, so you can do the things that you enjoy the most. That's what TaskRabbit, a new service company, helps people do. TaskRabbit uses the Internet and smartphones to quickly find people in your neighborhood to do the tasks for you. For example, if you are throwing a surprise party and you need someone to pick up the ice cream cake and your aunt Sally, but you don't have time to drive around, a tasker will do it for you! TaskRabbit employees are hired and screened by the company. They have specific services in which they specialize. Need help hanging a painting? Need someone with a pickup truck to help you move? There is a tasker out there to help you. The taskers are generally well-educated people. Out of all the taskers, about 70% hold bachelor's degrees, 20% hold master's degrees, and 5% hold PhD degrees. Some people have turned their work for TaskRabbit into a full-time job as well. Leah Busque, who ran out of dog food one day, founded TaskRabbit in 2008. She based it on the idea of “neighbors helping neighbors”. Since then, the company has received $37.5 million in funding.
