            A
When growing up, I always wanted a dog. But my dad is very clean. Not just clean, I might say. He hoses down (用水管浇) the backyard and the front walkway, and even gets halfway down the street, until we yell, “Dad, you can’t hose down the world!” Then he comes inside and starts brushing the fingerprints off the walls. So, no dog.
When I was eight, we moved to a larger house, with a pool, in a gated community. I was very against moving. Why, I cried, were we leaving everything and everyone we knew and loved?! Our old house was great; it was on a hill! Well, to calm me down, my parents told me that we could get a dog after the move. This was the ONLY thing that my parents ever promised but hasn’t happened in my life so far.
Now, in my twenties, I have a dog. He is fluffy (毛茸茸的), but not too fluffy; small, but not too small; white, but not too white. He is amazing. I don’t even believe in perfection really, but this dog is perfect for ME. It’s the dog I always dreamt of having, and he loves me as I knew a dog would.
At first I was not used to having a non-human, living thing with a beating heart following me around. Now I give the dog water, walk him and teach him how to lie in his bed while we are eating, so as not to bother us.
In some ways, I am glad I have been forced to wait until this age to have a dog. I don’t take him for granted. I am happy every morning when I wake up and hear his little nails clicking across the floor. I can see how a dog is not for everyone. They require a lot of attention and love.
            56. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
            A. What kind of person the father is.

C. It was unsuitable for a dog. D. There was nothing familiar.

58. What does the author want to express through the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?

  1. The dog is perfect in her eyes.
  2. It is difficult to describe the dog.
  3. The dog is different form other dogs.
  4. She likes the dog but it isn’t good enough.

59. According to the last two paragraphs, we can learn that .

  1. not everyone likes dogs
  2. it takes a long time to get along well with a dog
  3. the author was familiar with the dog as soon as she saw it
  4. the long wait has made the author treasure the dog better
    B
Some differences between UK and US English are well documented. For example, most people know that football is a different game in North America and the UK, and any American in the UK quickly learns not to talk about fanny packs. But there are also some more subtle differences that might stymie visitors to Britain, especially those who have learnt American English.
Please: Americans say please—just not always where the British expect to hear it. The British say please when ordering food in restaurants (or requesting things in shops) because they view the action as a personal request to the waiter. Americans regard ordering as providing the waiter with the information he needs to do his job, so they say ‘ I’ll have the chicken’. As language blogger, Ben Trawick-Smith, has noted, please can add implication(暗示)of impatience and anger to an American request.
Quite: Before an adjective, American quite means ‘very’, while British quite means ‘somewhat’. So, if an American tourist is quite tired, direct him to his bed. But if a British person tells you a restaurant is quite good, you’d be wise to keep looking for somewhere better.
Pants: Americans don’t use the word trousers much, and when they do, it only applies to menswear. Instead, Americans say they wear pants on their lower halves. When those clothes get damaged on their travels, they sometimes talk about the stains on their pants in public. Of course, they are regarded with horror or laughed at, since British pants usually refer to underpants.
Subway:Follow signs pointing to a subway in London, and you’ll find yourself either at an American fast-food joint or in an underground tunnel. And there in the tunnel, you’ll find confused Americans looking around for the trains. While the New York subway is a railway under the city’s streets, in London it is a pedestrian way beneath a road.
    60. The underlined word “stymie” in the first paragraph probably means “ ”.
    1. push B. prevent C. encourage D. allow

61. If an American customer in a coffee shop says “please”, it means that .

A. he is very grateful for the waiter’s service

B. the waiter is very slow or he is unsatisfied with the service

C. he is very satisfied with the coffee in this shop

D. he is very polite and patient

62. If you are a guide and British tourists say that the hotel is quite good, you should

.

A. keep looking for a better hotel

B. take them to stay in the hotel

C. keep showing them around tourist attractions

D. ask the hotel to make some changes to the service

63. If you ask a native in London where the subway is, you will probably

find in the end.

A. a shopping mall B. a coffee shop

C. an underground tunnel D. a railway

Doting (溺爱的) owners are often blamed when pets put on a few pounds. But experts say that in many cases overweight dogs and cats are “emotional eaters”. They also eat more than they need simply to cope with boredom or stress, research has found.

That means, if they have gained weight, it could be because they have been through an upsetting or emotional event. Now researches have also suggested that putting an overweight cat or dog on a diet, could make them unhappy, because the owner is taking away their “coping mechanism”.

The study says the obesity rate is as much as 25 percent in cats, and 45 percent in dogs.

The problem has been similar to that of Bridget Jones, the single lady who hides away from her troubled love life by eating, with vets believing some pets use food to cope with sadness, according to The Sunday Telegraph.

Comfort eating in humans tends to involve high calorie foods which the individual chooses, including ice cream and chocolate. But research shows animals are less fussy, and will go on a comfort binge (放纵吃喝) even if the only food on offer is their usual dog or cat food.

The research results are published in the latest edition of the Journal of Veterinary Behavior by Dr Franklin McMillan, a vet and former clinical professor of medicine at the Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine, in California. He said “emotional eating” in pets could be caused by feelings including boredom, anxiety and depression. But the research has also suggested overeating could also be a sign of a happy emotional state, as well as a psychological state of disorder.

64. What is the pets’ “coping mechanism” mentioned in the passage?

A. Eating B. Sleeping C. Running D. Roaring

65. The underlined word, “fussy”, in the fifth paragraph, probably means “ ”.

A. easy to change B. free from dirt

C. difficult to please D. sensitive to food

66. What can lead to “emotional eating” in pets?

①good feelings

②negative emotions

③physical hurt

④psychological states of disorder

  1. ②③ B. ②③④

C. ①②④ D. ①②③④

67. Where can we probably find this passage?

A. In a guide for pet owners.

B. In a report about medicine.

C. In a magazine about pet food.

D. On a website about pets.

D

Researchers may tell us that spending money on experiences produces more happiness than spending money on things. Going to a bar with friends is always pleasurable in slightly different ways. However, on the other hand, a table may also give lots of positive experience in the future.

I just moved from New York City to suburban Pennsylvania. It’s been quite a change of pace, with some positives and negatives. One of the best parts is that I’m spending more time outside. I quite enjoy staying outside, especially eating outside. I had a goal to eat outside as often as possible this summer, so one of my first purchases for the new house was a table and a set of chairs for the yard.

Is my yard table a thing or an experience? It’s clearly a thing and yet it enables the experience of eating outside. I love eating outside, and so my yard table is one of my favorite purchases ever. Therefore I find the dividing line between things and experiences is more nuanced(微妙的)than at first glance. However, to be happy, the most important thing is what kind of purchases you have made.

Sometimes we may all have purchases that seem like a waste of money—half of the clothes in our closet, for example—but how does this happen? There are many reasons. The biggest is that we spend a lot of our time working to earn money to buy things. The problem is that we buy a lot of stuff that we don’t actually need. There’s nothing worse than looking in your closet and realizing how many hours you spent laboring to buy things you never wear. But how about a table that lets you enjoy being outside in the summer? That’s worth every minute and penny and from it you will also get more happiness.

68. What does the author want to tell us about her personal experiences?

  1. The suburban life in Pennsylvania is quite good.
  2. It is really enjoyable staying outside.
  3. Her first purchase was very successful.
  4. Things can give us the same happiness as experiences.

69. From the last paragraph, we can infer that .

  1. people spend too much time working.
  2. the main purpose of work is to buy things.
  3. people often spend a lot of time buying unnecessary things.
  4. buying unnecessary things can bring much happiness to people.

70. What is the passage mainly about?

  1. How you can have happiness.
  2. How you can make moving enjoyable.
  3. What the best purchase is.
  4. Why people spend a lot of money on things.

71. What type of writing is the article likely to be?

  1. A narrative story. B. A news report.

C. An argumentative essay. D. A written explanation.

The demands of the modern world are growing day by day and this is putting more pressure on scientists to do research. However, as stated by Griffiths, “There is no hope of doing perfect research”. Naturally, there have been a lot of criticisms, as many scientists immediately announce that their research methods are very safe and that they have the perfect research theory.

However, scientific history is filled with examples, in which a perfect scientific solution that was based on decades of scientific research, has been overturned with new theories. Naturally, the first example that comes to mind is the fact that Newton’s Theories were thought to be very safe and they were used in all fields of science. For centuries, thousands of scientists around the world used Newton’s Theories to formulate(创立) other theories.

However, after nearly two centuries of use, Newton’s Theories were found to be not as perfect as they were thought. Though Einstein’s publication on the General Theory of Relativity, it was found that Newton’s laws were imperfect in explaining all motions that were taking place in our universe. It was found to be imperfect under some conditions, even though, Newton’s laws are still used today to predict motion at low speeds.

Thus, perfect research is only a myth. Of course, this does not mean that a scientist should simply give up and accept imperfection in his or her research efforts. Improvements and changes in research techniques and methods are a natural part of evolution and it is each scientist’s responsibility to take it forward as much as possible.

While the final answer to the universe’s question may never exist, a time will come when there will be fewer questions as new answers are found and more improved research is carried out by scientists around the world.

72. Why have there been a lot of criticisms?

  1. The modern world demands more and more.
  2. Scientists have a negative attitude.
  3. Many scientists arrive at their conclusions too fast.
    D. Griffiths does not believe what scientists say.
    73. Through the publication of the General theory of Relativity, Newton’s Theories turned out to be .
    1. not so perfectB. completelyC. very safeD. very precise
      74. What will scientists do to deal with the “imperfectness” problem?
      A. Accept the fact and give up.
      B. Improve and change their methods and techniques.
      C. Try their best to carry out the perfect study.
  4. Ignore it and do as they please.
    75. We can learn from the last paragraph that .
    1. the universe’s questions are sure to have a final answer.
    2. the number of questions is sure to increase with the passing of time.
    3. scientists are carrying out improved studies.
    4. there will be many new scientists in the world in the future.
