When most fathers discover their daughter is getting married, they set to work planning a witty speech. But when John Butcher's little girl tied the knot, he wanted to get one better than that. So the 50-year-old from Allington, Kent, spent 200 hours learning to sing so that he could surprise his daughter, Natalie, on her wedding day.

John had secret singing lessons for more than six months and practised at home so he could be perfect when he performed in front of 100 people on the big day.

John then sang a version of the Elvis classic “Always On My Mind” to his shocked daughter during her wedding reception in October. She said: “We had the most amazing day which was finished off perfectly with the surprise of my dad singing after the speech. I was in shock but touched by the choice of song and the amount of effort that had gone into the preparation. Everyone seemed to be as blown away as I was and it is something I will never forget.”

John's wife, Mel, 47, was equally as shocked and touched by her husband bursting into song. John said: “My wife Mel was in tears as she knew nothing about the performance.”

John said he came up with the idea to sing at the reception in April but as he admitted he wasn't previously able to carry a tune, he signed up for lessons to help him impress the wedding guests. He said: “I really can't sing and don't pretend to. I spoke to Darren in April about the idea and started lessons in May. I've had a lesson every other week and have practised the song for an hour a day since then.” Housewife Mel, said she was proud of her husband's efforts to make their daughter's day even more memorable.

  4. John liked to sing songs.

  1. John secretly practiced singing for his daughter.
  2. John’s strange behavior.
  3. John’s daughter’s wedding.

I learned my first lesson from my grandparents when I was young. They both grew up in very large families and lived through the Great Depression. Saving for a rainy day was their life philosophy. Rather than seeking fulfillment through material items, they chose to spend really simple life together with their family.
Over the years my grandparents notice dramatic changes in their community. Every year more farmland was destroyed to build larger and larger homes. As real estate(地产) prices rose, many of their neighbors sold their little homes and land. Soon theirs was the only small house surrounded by a sea of mansions(漂亮的住宅). My grandparents built and lived in a small 600-square-foot cottage for most of their adult lives. Lots of family members encouraged my grandparents to expand their little old house. But they didn't want a bigger one. They loved their little house and were content with what they had.
My grandparents avoided a consumptive (浪费的) lifestyle by painting and repairing the house themselves. They lived in a small home, but had a huge garden. They loved gardening and planting because it reduced their grocery bill, improved their health, and gave them an excuse to be outside. They also reused and recycled many things. For instance, they had driven the same car for over 15 years and didn't buy a new one until the old Chevrolet was worn out.
From my grandparents, I learned an important lesson: it is possible to live a simple life. My grandparents taught me that living a simple life isn't about self-deprivation(自我牺牲). Instead ,it's about giving yourself the time, freedom, and money to pursue your dreams. Becoming debt free, downsizing to a smaller home, and going out on foot instead of by car are good ways to take control of your life and start pursuing your dreams.
    4. The community’s changes include all the following EXCEPT that _______.
    1. many mansions were built thereB. many neighbors sold their houses
      C. the houses became more expensiveD. people built more farmland
      5. The author's grandparents didn't expand their house because ______.
      A. they didn't understand the family members' advice
      B. their house was really new and large enough
      C. they were satisfied with the house they lived in
      D. they were too old to do any house-building job
      6. Which of the following is a consumptive lifestyle in the grandparents' opinion?
      A. Changing cars in a short time. B. Planting vegetables in the garden.
      C. Reusing and recycling things. D. Repairing the house themselves.
      7. Which can be the best title of this passage?
      1. How to Live SimplyB. My Grandparents

C. A Simple LifestyleD. A Lesson from My Grandparents

Top Four Ways to Build a Wonderful Life

1. Live Below Your Means

There will always be temptation to give up the future for immediate pleasure. We all want to buy that new piece of technology, treat ourselves to an expensive night on the town, or take out a loan for the flashy car we can’t afford. It might feel great at the time but unwise spending hurts a lot later on. Enjoy life’s simple pleasures and save as much as you can. Expensive things don’t create lasting happiness and security. Careful spending will bring you greater leisure and enjoyment in the long run.

2. Put Your Money to Work

Saving is great, but to make the most of your money you need to put it to work. Good investments can be the difference between retiring in your 40’s or in your 60’s. A post today at The Simple Dollar really got me thinking. According to Trent’s estimates, if a person in their early 20’s invests 20% of their income in an S&P index fund, the interest they earn will equal their current salary when they reach their early 40’s. They could retire without a drop in income! Wise investing is the surest path to financial independence and it’s something everyone can work on. It’s definitely an area I’ll be devoting more attention to in my personal life.

3. Educate Yourself

To be happy we need continuous growth. The best way to grow is life-long education. This doesn’t mean you need to pursue a doctorate or spend 2 hours reading every day. Self-education can be anything that takes you out of your comfort zone. The important part is keeping an open mind and searching for fresh ideas and perspectives. Education builds over time. It might feel like the bits of wisdom you acquire don’t mean much, but over the years they add up to form a wiser, kinder, more interesting person.

4. Develop Lasting Personal Relationships

Suppose you had everything you wanted. Would you be happy without anyone to share it with? The personal relationships we develop with friends and family members are the greatest source of happiness in our lives. Don’t forget about them. Taking the time to cultivate and enjoy personal relationships is essential to long-term happiness. Without the people you care about you’ll probably be miserable, no matter how successful you become.

8.According to the passage, in order to achieve financial independence after retirement, we’d better ________.

A. get along well with our family and friends

B. bring ourselves leisure as well as enjoyment

C. invest our money wisely when we are young

D. learn some new skills and try to find a new job

9.From the passage we can infer that some people try to ________.

A. gain happiness by buying themselves expensive things

B. save everything they can to help those in need

C. devote more attention to their personal life

D. take out a loan to promote technology

10.The author of the passage may agree that the key to self-education is ________.

A. gaining as many degrees as possible

B. being open to new ideas and views

C. only focusing on very big events

D. creating long-term happiness

11.The above passage is written in order to ________.

A. explain what true happiness is about

B. offer ways to achieve a happy and successful life

C. introduce different definitions about happiness

D. persuade readers to find out the meaning of life

D

There is a common belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever considered spelling unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, quite different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority (优先) it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is how to encourage a child to express himself freely in writing without holding him back with spelling.
If spelling becomes the only point of his teacher's interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to"play safe". He will write only words within his spelling range. That's why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience:"This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling mistakes." It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupils' technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad thing for the teacher who had omitted (略过) to read the composition, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child's deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the mistakes, but if his priority had centered on the child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more hope to seek improvement.

12. Teachers differ in their opinions about   _______ .

A. the difficulties in teaching spelling
B. the necessity of teaching spelling
C. the importance of the basic writing skills
D. the role of spelling in general language development

13. The expression"play safe" probably means ______.

A. to write carefully
B. to avoid using words one is not sure of
C. to use dictionaries frequently
D. to do as teachers say

14. Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that______.

A. students will be able to express their ideas more freely.
B. teachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakes.
C. students will have more trust in writing.
D. students will learn to spell words correctly.

15. The main idea of the passage is _______.

A. the importance of developing writing skills
B. the importance of spelling
C. the correct way of marking composition
D. the relationship between spelling and the content of a composition

Each Indian tribe had a different language. Many Indians never learned any language except their own. Do you know how Indians from different tribes talked to each other? They had two ways to talk without sound. __16__
Sign language is a way of talking by using signs. Indians used sign language when they met strangers. In this way, they could find out whether the stranger was a friend or an enemy. In the Indian sign language, signs were made with the hands. Indians usually used signals when they wanted to send messages to someone far away. To make signals, an Indian might use a pony. __17__ Or he might use smoke, a mirror or fire arrows.
To signal that he had seen many animals, an Indian rode his pony in a large circle. Sometimes the Indian gave a signal like this and then went away to hide. __18__
The blanket signal was visible from far away. An Indian held the corners of a blanket in his hands. Then he began to swing the blanket from side to side in front of him. __19__ He could also send many signals with a mirror. He usually used the mirror to warn someone of danger. Or he attempted to get the attention of a person far away. But he also used it to send messages in code. __20__ At night, Indians used fire arrows for signaling.
An Indian also sent signals with smoke. He made a small fire of dry wood. Then he put grass or green branches on it. He held a blanket over the fire for a minute. When he removed the blanket from the fire, there was a cloud of smoke. The number of clouds of smoke told his message in code.
Now you can see that Indians didn’t need to learn each other’s language. They could talk to one another by using signals or sign language.

A. Of course, mirrors could be used only when the sun was shining.

B. An Indian could send many different signals with his blanket.

C. But they still can make themselves understood.

D. This meant that there was danger .

E. Different things mean different to them.

F. He might use a blanket.

G. One way was by sign language ; the other way by signals.

In the morning the first thing wakes me is my telephone ring. Long distance telephone calls are very cheap before 7 o’clock in the morning.
