Ecobee3 Smarter WiFi Thermostat

Smart thermostats have become the face of smart home technology for most, but depending on what your home is like, it's possible to say the ecobee3 in superior.

Most of the smart thermostats carry the same benefits, including the ecobee3. They can learn your preferences and schedules, and then adjust the temperature accordingly. They're better-looking and more enjoyable to use than the basic pieces of plastic that occupy most households. Their very presence will probably make you more conscious about saving energy. And once you're able to heat up or cool down your house from your phone, without having to get out of bed, you won't want to go back.

If you live in a larger household, the ecobee3 can be much more convenient-- provided you pick up a couple more remote sensors. Yes, it gets pretty expensive at that point, but having those gives you effective control over the temperature in different rooms around your house. In comparison, other thermostats’ measurements are largely limited to the area in which they're installed (安装).

If you live in a smaller place, that's no big deal; the ecobee3 still has distinct advantages. It is touch-enabled and more spacious, making it less annoying when you want to enter a WiFi password, see weather information, and so on.

Still, all the smart thermostats are pretty great. Which one is best just depends on whether you need a whole-home solution or a more straightforward one. For now, if it's the former, go with the ecobee3.

When he was unsuccessful, the woman, Linda, said she and her family lived nearby and would be happy if we spent the night at her home, My husband was stunned at her offer. She called her son to direct us, since she had to hold fort at the gas station till midnight.

When we reached their home, her husband greeted us. He took out two sleeping bags for the children. He invited us to have coffee and chat while we waited for his wile. When she came back, we asked if we could slip away in the morning so as not to disturb them. They said we were now guests and we would have to have breakfast with them.

We woke up to table set for breakfast. They’d made a mountain of pancakes and bacon. We ate breakfast, and when we were leaving, my husband asked if he could offer some payment. When Mark Levine, an English-language instructor at Beijing’s Minzu University of China, was first invited to attend a Chinese colleague’s wedding in Jiangsu province in 2017, his second year in China, the California native was ready to present a small decorative gift for the new couple as he used to do in the United States.

However, his gesture suddenly seemed inappropriate as he realized the Chinese at the ceremony had red envelopes filled with cash to present rather than a packed gift.

“It’s a little bit embarrassing when you present something that people didn’t expect to receive on certain occasions,” Levine, who used to be a social worker in the US, told China Daily recently.

“In the US, people do that as well but only for close relatives. People would normally give things as presents, while here in China red envelopes are more commonly welcomed.”

It was the first time the 66-year-old discovered the etiquette-including taboos(禁忌)-in gift giving. He was not alone, as the recent controversy following a British minister’s visit to Taipei, Taiwan, revealed.

British Minister of State for Transport Baroness Susan Kramer presented a watch in January to Ko Wen-je, mayor of Taipei, when she visited the city, immediately sparking headlines as she broke a long-held taboo in Chinese culture.

A clock or watch, or zhong in Mandarin, signifies “the end” in Chinese, and many associate it with death. Therefore, giving someone, especially an elder, a clock or watch implies “your time is up”.

Kramer later apologized for the gaffe(失礼), but Ko also came under fire for his “rude” response as he told reporters that he had no use for the watch and would sell it for cash.

However, some expats in China, such as Mark Dreyer, stand by Ko in this particular debate. “When I heard about the story, I felt embarrassed,” said Dreyer, a British citizen who has lived and worked in China since 2007. “After all, ‘don’t give clocks or watches to your hosts’ is on page 1 of most China travel guides. I’m embarrassed by the lack of respect shown by the British for not even reading about the customs beforehand.”"

28. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph3 refer to?

  1. Giving cash. B. Presenting gifts.

C. Receiving money. D. Attending weddings.

29. How did the public view Ko’s response to the gift?

  1. They thought it appropriate.
  2. They believed he had no other choice.
  3. They considered it a smart move.
  4. They saw it as a rudeness.

30. What was Dreyer’s attitude to the British Minister’s gift?

  1. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Supportive.

31. What can we learn from the passage?

  1. Americans don’t expect to receive cashes as gifts.
  2. Chinese don’t expect to receive clocks as gifts.
  3. Presenting red envelopes is a bad custom in China.
  4. British know nothing about Chinese customs.

D

Average humans can consume 15 or more drinks in plastic bottles a month. If you were born after 1978, and live until 80 years old, you will leave behind a minimum of 14, 400 plastic bottles on this planet. These bottles take hundreds of years to break down into tiny pieces of plastic, never to completely disappear. Most of the waste is consumed by fish and birds, which has shortened their lifetime greatly.

The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally save us from being buried in plastic. It's a community in Panama that is going to be made of used bottles. The design process begins with building steel frames, which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is complete, and electrical and plumbing (管道装置) lines are put inside, the plastic walls are covered by concrete--both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17℃ cooler than the outside, which is the biggest benefit to people living inside.

The village is the brainchild (主意) of Robert Bezeau with the intention of setting up several environmental projects. Having started a recycling program four years ago, during which a number of plastic bottles were collected, he started to think of how they could be put to use, Soon enough, he decided to use them to build houses, and came up with a basic idea for the construction process.

The project hopes to make people conscious of the waste that these bottles create so that they can do more to protect the environment. The village will also create an education center that will teach individuals from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as construction materials for shelter. Recycled bottles could neutralize the negative effect of your passage on this planet, and move closer to leaving only your “footprints”.

32. What does Paragraph 1 intend to tell us?

  1. The reason for buying fewer drinks.
  2. The difficult situation of wildlife.
  3. The amount of plastic waste.
  4. The seriousness of plastic pollution

33. What is the biggest benefit to people living in the Plastic Bottle Village?

  1. The house will be much cooler than normal ones.
  2. The material of construction will be reduced a lot.
  3. The newly-made house can save a lot of electricity.
  4. The waste of the house can be consumed by fish and birds.

34. Which of the following words can best describe Robert?

  1. Creative. B. Courageous. C. Enthusiastic. D. Sensitive.

35. The main purpose of Robert's projects is to .

  1. provide shelter for locals
  2. reuse all deserted plastic bottles
  3. popularize the use of plastic bottles
  4. raise people's environmental awareness

How to be a Good Team Leader
Teamwork is essential in school, sports, and group activities. Being a good team leader involves a lot of skills, but knowing how to relate to your team is one of the most important qualities a good team leader should have.
    Show respect.
As a leader, you will sometimes have to make a quick decision in a hurry. 36 You’d better explain clearly why you made the decision and ask for feedback from your team, which shows that you are a leader with respect.

If some people are a little behind on a project or task, help them. Be patient and spend some time with the individual to assess why there is an issue. In addition, find a task for everyone no matter what their skill or level.37
    38
Sometimes people are scared to try something, and this is where the leader comes in. Show your team that the task is possible, even if difficult.39 And they can have the job done at last.
    Recognize the positive results.
Acknowledge your team for a job well done, even if it’s small. You don’t have to reward good work with a pay raise.40Taking a second or two to stop and thank your team for making a difference.
Once you follow the tips mentioned above, you will make a good team leader.
    1. After all, they all want to contribute in some way.
    2. Be criticized.
    3. A lot of excercises are needed, too.
    4. Oral appreciation holds a lot of weight.
    5. Encourage your team.
    6. Your team will be more likely to get motivated.
    7. But this may not always be what everyone in your team wants.

The culture and the customers of New Zealand are incredibly unique. You would never think that a country 61(locate) in the corner of the world would be so multi-cultural, but you really don’t realize 62 how different it is until you arrive. There are literally people from all over the world that live in New Zealand. Most of the island is inhabited by immigrants from 63 (Europe) countries, but the “miniorities” on the island make 64 a majority of the population. The native Maori play a large role in society, and many of their customs 65 (combine) with modern ones.
There are many Asians and Africans who have also immigrated to the country over the years, 66 (make) it a literal melting pot of cultures. But it’s not like many other countries 67 there seems to be tension among the different cultures.People in New Zealand believe in a principle that they call “a fair go.” 68 something goes wrong, then New Zealand people are more likely to give people 69 second chance so that they can prove 70 (them) or show that things can be done differently.

W: Well. I've always loved clothes. In fact, I enjoy sewing and making my own clothes. Also, I have a background in business and I'm good at working with numbers.

M: Do you have any other interests?

W: I enjoy travelling very much, and I'm very interested in cooking.

W: I would like to buy two tickets for me and my friend to New York, please. And I need to leave today. There is something urgent on business.

M: Are you aware that prices without two weeks advance notice will be very high? And today is Saturday. I'm afraid there may be no tickets left. Oh, luckily, here are two tickets to New York, but it's economy, not first-class. Will that be one-way or round-trip?

W: I wish I could stay there, but unfortunately it will have to be a round-trip ticket.

M: When would you like to return?

W: I will stay there for seven days

M: OK. I have you booked on Flight 513 leaving at 2:00 p.m. and arriving in New York at 6:00 p.m. tonight. The return is flight 514 leaving on 5th November at 8: 00 a.m. and arriving at Michigan at 12: 00 on the very day.

W: Perfect! I still have time to go to the shops in the airport before I go. Oh, but how much are they?

M: Two weekly return tickets to New York, it totals 150 pounds.

M: Thanks for calling our competition hotline. We have all the information you need to enter this exciting painting competition. The most important date for you to remember is the one you have to send in your paintings by - that's the thirty-first of August.
We need them all in by that date because the winning paintings will be in a show held from October 15th to November 1st at the School of Arts.
The next important bit of information is the topic for the competition. Last year's topic of Cities was very successful. This year we'd like to see paintings showing your ideas on the subject of The Future. Think about your world, your family and home一 how might it look one hundred years from now?
Unfortunately, we can't return your paintings but to show that you've entered, all of you will receive a certificate. It'll look great on your bedroom wall next to your posters and photos.
We welcome entries from school groups, So make sure you tell your teacher about the competition. Schools can win a special course with Barry Wells. He's an artist from Australia, who's produced pictures for many children's story books sold here in England. He'll be doing classes in how to draw cartoons.
Good luck and happy painting!

One possible version:

Dear Bob,

Im Li Hua.I feel honoured to tell you something about Chinese paper cutting.

Paper cutting is one of the most popular kinds of folk art in China. Its history dates back to the 6th century, but it is supposed that the beginning of paper cutting was even a few centuries earlier.

In ancient China, paper cutting was commonly used for religious purposes in ceremonies or offering sacrifices. Today, paper cuttings are mainly used as decoration, which is widely used for decorating walls, windows, doors for the festival atmosphere.

Paper cutting covers nearly all topics.People cut peper into kinds of shapes of animals, plants and so on..Made by hand, paper cutting has changed from decoration to a kind of Chinese traditional folk art.

After the brief introduction above,I think youll like this kind of Chinese traditional folk art.

Yours,

 Li Hua
