Removing the sleeve(封套), you will find a book that is entirely white, except for the names of its author and subject in elegant black type on the cover. It is the perfect design for the biography of a man who insisted that even the insides of his products be perfectly constructed, and that his factory walls flash in the whitest white.

The cover was the only part of the book Steve Jobs wanted to control, writes Isaacson in his introduction. Though Mr. Jobs pushed the biographer of Albert Einstein and Benjamin Franklin to write in his own way, generously allowing the writer more than 40 interviews, this book offers quite a different view of Mr. Jobs, who won much praise from his fans after his death on October 5th at the age of 56.

As a biographer of Albert Einstein and Benjamin Franklin, Mr. Isaacson knows how to celebrate long-dead genius, but he claimed that Steve Jobs would not be entirely praiseful words. The picture he paints, particularly in the first half of this book, is not nice. Mr. Jobs emerges as a controlling and often cold-blooded character. A child of the 1960s counterculture(反主流文化), he hated materialism and lived in simply furnished houses(in part because he was too particular about furniture). But when Apple went public in 1980, he refused to give any share to Daniel Kottke, a longtime supporter and soul mate from college. “He has to abandon the people he is close to”, observes Andy Hertzfeld, an early Apple engineer.

Mr. Jobs was undoubtedly possessing an extraordinary ability to attract others and inspire a kind of faith that could not be questioned. But also he could be cold and cruel. If he disapproved of an employee’s work, he often shamed him. “This is who I am,” he once said after being challenged, “and you can’t expect me to be someone I’m not.” This disgusting personality wasn’t always helpful, but it served a purpose, writes Mr. Isaacson, many would “end their chain of horror stories by saying that he got them to do things they never dreamed possible”.

Mr. Isaacson treats Steve Jobs as the biography of record, which means that it is a strange book to read so soon after its subject’s death.

24. The biography for Jobs is believed to have the perfect design because ____.

A. it follows Jobs’ style B. its cover is entirely white

C. black and white are his favorite D. it is designed by a famous biographer

25. The picture of Jobs that Isaacson paints in his book is______.

A. cruel B. humorous C. particular D. generous

26. It can be safely concluded that______.

A. Jobs is highly spoken of in the book

B. Isaacson doesn’t think Jobs a good man

C. Jobs didn’t care about the design of the book

D. many descriptions of Jobs are not nice in the book

27. This passage can be classified as ______.

A. a personal diary B. a book review

C. a news report D. a TV interview

In tens of years, a country can change a lot. Once upon a time, the country of Cambodia in Southeast Asia could not have dreamed of winning a great international award as a tourist destination. And yet today, this once-troubled land of more than 15 million people has been named the World Best Tourism Destination for 2016 by the European Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT).

In the eyes of Anton Caragea, president of the ECTT, “Cambodia is a perfectly safe destination that will forever mark your heart.”

The country’s greatest attraction is, no doubt, the famous Angkor Wat (吴哥窟) in the province of Siem Reap.

Cambodia is poor, but it is developing. Its economy has grown by an average of 6 percent a year in the last 10 years. Money from richer countries is coming into the country and changing the culture a little. And Cambodia’s own culture is also becoming known in the wider world. Times are changing for this country made up of Vietnamese, Chinese and hill-tribe peoples. In other words, Cambodia has become a part of globalization.

One sign of Cambodia’s culture becoming famous worldwide is the growing number of Cambodian restaurants in other parts of the world. What do Cambodians eat? Their diet has rice and fish from the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, along with lime, lemon grass, garlic and coconut.

Like many Southeast Asian countries, Cambodia is Buddhist by religion. In many ways it is still a very traditional society. Despite opening up recently, the country has many special traditions: Cambodians have their own Khmer dance, classical music that stays with it and a history of epic poems and stories.

28. What was Cambodia like in the past?

A. It was developing its culture well. B. It was troubled by problems.

C. It was ruled by religious leaders. D. It was a safe tourist destination.

29.Which of the following in Cambodia attracts international tourists most?

A.Its delicious food. B. Its special traditions.

C.Its famous Angkor Wat. D. Its safe environment.

30.What is a sign of Cambodian culture becoming famous worldwide?

A.Cambodia has opened up recently.

B.Cambodia has many special traditions.

C.Money from richer countries is changing Cambodia.

D.More Cambodian restaurants are opened abroad.

31.From the passage we know Cambodian society remains _________.

A. international B. open C. closed D. traditional

D

What do literary tourists look for when they visit the British Isles? Often it’s the charmingly old-fashioned bookshops that provide the perfect excuse to read uninterruptedly and to disconnect from the world. Until recently, the trend for fine coffee and high-speed Wi-Fi was considered by some in the city’s bookish crowd to be ruining London’s centuries-old tradition of disconnected reading.

But a crop of bookshops is fighting against crazy online engagement and is creating environments where the real-life, Internet-free book reading is the most effective way to expand your social and professional networks. Leading the fighting is Libreria Books, which is in the company of Tenderbooks, Buchhandlung Wakther, Lutyens&Rubinstein etc., all independent book shops without high-speed Wi-Fi and coffee.

Mr. Silva of Libreria was inspired to open his shop after experiencing a common suffering for London’s book-lovers—the repeated ring tones of smart phones ruining the peace of his bookshop experience. He wanted to get people reading without interruption. He said, “You can get Wi-Fi anywhere now, it’s not necessary in a bookshop.”

Their mantra(原则) has drawn a wise, brainy crowd. The bookshop should be an escape from an information overload. “If someone gets a phone call, they leave the shop. It’s the same with the Internet—people just know this isn’t the space for being on line.” said Tamsin Clark, owner of Tender books. And in face of the Internet overload, some stores are proving to be among London’s hottest places.

Mr. Silva said “an old-fashioned space” is clearly appealing to book lovers. He said his shop has had twice as many customers as expected, with visitors from as far as Australia and China. Faced with a bookshelf recommended by the Queen or surrounded by first editions, who wants to download a morning full of emails?

32. What would literary tourists like to find in an old-fashioned bookshop?

A. Peaceful reading time. B. Social networks.

C. High-speed Wi-Fi. D. Free coffee.

33. Why did Mr. Silva of Libreria decide to open his own bookshop?

A. He saw the trend of running bookshops.

B. He aimed at banning Wi-Fi in bookshops.

C. He was inspired by other bookshop owners.

D. He had an unpleasant reading in a bookshop.

34. What do London’s bookish crowd think of the Internet-free bookshops?

A. Outdated. B. Attractive. C. Fashionable. D. Professional.

35. What does the last sentence of the passage mean?

A. You can still work efficiently.

B. Emails keep coming in all morning.

C. People prefer reading to being connected.

D. People have no access to downloading emails

Livestock (牲畜) cloning is the practice of cloning sheep, cattle and other livestock species as a way to improve efficiency. The basic idea behind livestock cloning is to clone animals that have certain qualities, such as cows that produce more milk or meat.    36

However, this practice is very controversial, and livestock farmers have been hesitant to adopt it fully because of public opposition and certain inefficiencies.

In technical terms, livestock are cloned by taking cells from one animal and using them to fertilize eggs (使卵子受精). Scientists take the fertilized eggs and put them in female animals.   37   Many animals are born with abnormal shapes. Scientists are looking for ways to improve the process and make it less expensive to adopt on a wider scale.

38   For example, if farmers were able to take only their very best animals and recreate them many times, they could potentially be more productive.

There are also some potential problems with cloned livestock.     39  For example, when a disease hits, there are usually individuals who cannot be harmed by the disease or are more resistant, and they will generally survive. If all the animals were genetically identical or similar, this sort of disease could totally destroy an entire generation of livestock, leaving the world with a massive food shortage.

In addition to concerns about genetic diversity, there are other concerns about cloning.   40   There are also some people who worry that livestock cloning research may be a gateway to introducing human cloning, which is widely disapproved of.

A. Are the surviving clones really clones?

B. Therefore, the new species is expected to be better.

C. The biggest one arises from a reduction in genetic diversity.

D. Cloned livestock have the potential to provide some major benefits.

E. Cloning animals shows us what might happen if we try to clone humans.

F. These concerns sometimes come from worries over unforeseen consequences.

G. This process doesn't always work perfectly, and it can be relatively expensive.
