江苏省苏州、无锡、常州、镇江四市2018届高三模拟考试(二)英语Second-Hand Finds
It’s hard to know what is worth buying at a garage sale. These can be of great value.

Fun is hard 10 have.

Fun is a rare jewel.

Somewhere along the line people got the modem idea that fur was there for the asking, that people deserved fun, that if we didn’t have a little fun every day, we would turn into puritans (清教徒),

“Was it fun?” became the question that overshadowed all other questions. When the pleasure got to be the main thing, the fun fetish (迷恋) was sure to follow. Everything was supposed to be fun. If it wasn’t fun, then we were going to make it fun, or else.

Think of all the things that got the reputation of being fun. Family outings were supposed to be fun. Education was supposed to be fun. Work was supposed to be fun. Walt Disney, church and staying fit were supposed to be fun.

Fun got to be such a big thing that everybody started to look for more and more thrilling ways to supply it. One way was to step up the level of danger So that you could be sure that, no matter what, you would manage to have a little fun.

Big occasions were supposed to be fun, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter. But we ended up going through every Big Event we ever celebrated, waiting for the fun to start. So I should tell you just in case you’re worried about your fun capacity while you are sitting around waiting for the fun to start, that not much is. I don’t mean to put a damper on things. I just mean we ought to treat fun reverently. It is a mystery. It cannot be caught like a virus. It cannot be trapped like an animal. When fun comes in on little dancing feet, we probably won’t be expecting it. In fact, I bet it comes when we’re doing our duty, our job.

I remember one day, long ago, on which I had an especially good time. Pam Davis and I, aged 12, walked into a store that morning to buy some candy. She got her Bit-O-Honey. I got my malted milk balls, chocolate stars. Then we started back to her house. It was a long way to Pam’s house but every time we got weary, Pam would put her hand over her eyes, scan the horizon like a sailor and say, “We ought to reach home by nightfall,” at which point the two of us would laugh until we thought we couldn’t stand it another minute. Then after we got calm, she’d say it again. You should have been there. It was the kind of day and friendship and occasion that made me deeply regretful that I had to grow up.

It is fun.

58. What does the author mainly want to talk about in this passage?

A. The definition of fun.

A. look forward to having fun

D. teach others how to have fun6

60. Who would benefit most from the article?

An eclipse happens when one heavenly body such as a moon or planet passes into the shadow of another heavenly body. There are two types of eclipses on Earth: lunar eclipses and solar eclipses.

The moon orbits Earth and, at the same time, Earth orbits the sun. Sometimes Earth moves between the sun and the moon. When this happens, Earth blocks the light from the sun. This is an eclipse of the moon—a lunar eclipse. A lunar eclipse can occur only when the moon is full and can be seen from Earth at night.

There are two types of lunar eclipses: total lunar eclipses and partial lunar eclipses.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. The moon is in Earth’s shadow and the sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, which causes Earth’s atmosphere to filter or block out most of the blue light. However, a partial lunar eclipse happens when only a part of the moon enters Earth’s shadow. What people see from Earth during a partial lunar eclipse depends on how the sun, Earth and moon are lined up.

A lunar eclipse usually lasts for a few hours. At least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, but total lunar eclipses are rare. It is safe to look directly at a lunar eclipse although a pair of binoculars can certainly help the viewer appreciate the beauty of this phenomenon.

Sometimes when the moon orbits Earth, it moves between the sun and Earth. When this happens, the moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching Earth. This causes an eclipse of the sun, or solar eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the moon casts a shadow onto Earth.

There are three types of solar eclipses: total solar eclipses, partial solar eclipses and annular eclipses(日环食). During a solar eclipse, the moon casts two shadows on Earth. Solar eclipses happen once every 18 months. Unlike lunar eclipses, solar eclipses only last for a few minutes

Scientists use solar eclipses as an opportunity to study the sun’s corona(日冕). The corona is the sun’s top layer. During an annular eclipse, NASA (the U. S. space agency) uses ground and space instruments to view the corona when the moon blocks the sun’s glare. The sudden blocking of the sun during an eclipse reduces the light and changes the temperature on the ground. This creates conditions that can affect local weather and animal behavior.

It’s important to never look directly at the sun—it can permanently damage your eyes! Solar radiation that occurs during an eclipse of the Sun can cause a form of burns of one’s eyes known as eclipse blindness. In fact, the only way to safely view a solar eclipse is by using specially-designed equipment.

61. What can we know about “a lunar eclipse”?

A. I may create conditions that can affect local weather and animal behavior.

B. It can be seen when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth.

C. It usually happens once every 18 months and only lasts for a few minutes each time.

A. people will experience a temperature drop when lunar eclipses happen

B. eclipses are the result of the shadow cast by the moon onto Earth

C. total lunar eclipses are more difficult to observe than other types of lunar eclipses

D. there can be eclipses even if the three heavenly bodies are not exactly lined up

64. Why is it safer to watch a lunar eclipse than a solar eclipse?

A. Because moonlight is not as strong as sunlight.

B. Because a lunar eclipse lasts longer than a solar eclipse.

C. Because special equipment can be employed to view a lunar eclipse.

D. Because a lunar eclipse has much more steady light than solar eclipse.

D

The eyeliner makes the dark circles less pronounced. The lipstick hides the trembling. The ponytail (马尾辫) masks missing patches of hair. I might look a bit thinner, but everyone will ask about my new diet. One hour of preparation and I look like myself. One hour out of 24. Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth it—wasting a twenty-fourth of my day on a lie.

Checking my makeup one last time, I slip on a cute pair of flats- heels are too dangerous with shaky legs—and grab my Hollister bag. Walking downstairs, I breathe in the sweet smell of waffles and juice.

“Morning, Mom,” I call.

“Moring, baby,” she sings. “Did you sleep well?”

“Better than I have been.”

She sighs, and her eyes look a hundred years old for a minute. “Any improvement is good,” she says half-heartedly.

“Of course.”

“I made waffles.”

“Thanks, Mom. Smells delicious.”

I sit at the table and she hands me a plate. The thought of all that food turns my stomach, but I force a smile and thank my mother again. She busies herself at the sink and fills the silence with chatter. When she turns around, she takes in the waffles still on my plate, only missing a few bites. I smile apologetically.

“I’m not very hungry this morning.”

“You’ll need your strength for this afternoon. Morrison will wait for you.” She bites her lip.

“I packed your lunch.”

“I’m 18, Mom. I can pack my own lunch. You have more important things to do. ”

She reaches for the paper bag. “But now I know you’ll have something to eat. And you need to eat, okay? You have to keep your strength up.”

Sighing, I take the bag. I know this peanut butter and jelly sandwich won’t be eaten, not any more than the one yesterday or the day before. And even if I do eat it, I’ll just throw it up later.

“Honey, have you thought about what I said the other day?” she asks.

I remain silent.

“Sweetheart, you can’t hide the secret forever. Eventually you’re going to miss school and people will start asking questions.”

“Mom, I have two months left of high school. I can make it till then. I’m class president. I was voted ‘Most popular’, ‘Best smile’ and ‘Most likely to succeed’. I’m the girl who’s got it all together. People don’t want to know that the girl w ho’s got it all together doesn’t have it all together. People don’t want to know that girl is to be parted!”

“Honey, don’t say that. You’re not. . .”

“Yes, I am. You heard Dr. Morrison. I have maybe a year left. But that means I can graduate and then never see those people again. I’ ll depart and they’ll feel sorry for me, but at least I won’t have to tolerate their pity.”

“But. . .” she tries to interrupt.

“Mom, listen to me. I don’t want to be the girl everyone looks at and whispers, ‘Look at her. Poor thing. She has cancer. ’I can’t handle that. I want to be normal. Just for these last two months.”

“Okay,” she whispers. “Okay. Just remember, it’s okay if you don’t have it all together. Sometimes things just fall apart and there’s nothing we can do.”

“Thanks, Mom.” I grab my bag and lunch and kiss her on the check. “

” she replies. This exchange, once taken for granted, is now a vital part of every morning, every afternoon, and every night. Three little words, followed by four more, have come to mean more than an entire conversation. They bridge all gaps and disagreements, because we both know there is now a restricted number left.

Keys in hand, I open the door and blink(眨眼)in the early morning sun. Perfect.

Sorry seems to be the hardest word. So sang Elton John on one of his biggest 1970s hits—but not every public figure seems to find it so tough to let out that powerful five-letter word.

In recent months varieties of public figures, from politicians, to Hollywood actors and YouTube stars have all publicly expressed regrets.

But with floods of regrets on the airwaves, just how can we tell a forced apology from a heartfelt expression?

In its purest form, saying sorry should be an “act of regrets, a realization that something you have said or done has hurt someone and you want to repair it”, says psychologist Geraldine Joaquim.

Made early, a sincere apology can be hugely beneficial and can “relieve the tension and takes the wind out of an accuser’s sails”, she says.

A need to say sorry can arise in someone’s public life and equally at home with their family and friends but, whatever the environment, how well it is received depends on how personalized it feels.

From businesses, governments and organizations, a scripted response will fail to resonate(引起共鸣) as it will not convey empathy (同理心) and sympathy.

Whether online or in person, the timing and choice of language in an apology are decisive factors.

“It is important to show that you understand and sympathize,” says Martin Stone, of PR agency Tank, “It is vital that any business or individual making an apology understands the focus—is it sorry for the way it’s acted or is it sorry that the complainant feels the way they do?”

Performed apologies always have a sense of being “acted out”, and are often accompanied by too many theatrical gestures. If sincere, the person making the apology will be looking for listening clues to see if they are being understood, such as eye contact and facial expressions. They will provide “humbling (谦卑的) signals”, such as a lowered head, to indicate regrets.

It is also important to avoid irresponsible statements or promises that can’t be kept. “Don’t say that you’ll ensure that this will not happen again if you’re not confident it won’t. It could come back to bite you,” Stone explains.

Equally, the use of “but” can hugely change the tone of an apology.

As Stone points out. “I’m sorry but. . . It sounds like you are making excuses and aren’t actually taking any form of responsibility. It may be three letters but it can instantly make an apology seem hollow.”

Possible version1:

According to the caricature, summer slide refers to the academic loss to students who prefer playing to learning during summer holidays. The sharp decline in reading scores is an evident example.

Obviously, the author of the caricature is worried about the phenomenon. Readers, especially parents, are warned of their children’s “sliding down”. Students are therefore advised to do some reading every day.

From my perspective, it’s important not to fall into the pitfall of “summer slide”. Although vocations are meant for a rest to us students, it should not be at the expense of our study. We should respond to the author’s call to do daily reading. Anyway, abandoning ourselves in reading is actually another way of leisure. In addition, we’d better ask our parents to create an academic ground for us, like reading together with us, etc. With the joint efforts of both, the summer slide can surely be avoided.

Personally I don’t subscribe to the author’s idea. Although “summer slide” does exist, it doesn’t mean our holidays should be deprived of in such a name. Otherwise, what is the point of holidays? We students, and even parents, have long suffered from heavy burden of study. Taking a rest both physically and mentally is actually refreshing our mind for later improvement, which is in its nature a better way to avoid “summer slide”. Therefore, doing compulsory daily reading in summer holidays is nothing but a bad idea to me.

Text 1

W: Hello, this is Jenny from Sony. I would like to book a conference room for the 29th and 30th next month.

M: OK, 35 pounds per day.

Text 2

W: Jack, why don’t you go to work by bike?
M: I used to, but the weather today is so nice, and I decide to walk to my company. It’s a good way to take exercise though I have to leave home an hour earlier than usual.

Text 3

M: I think I should give up playing tennis. I always lose.
W: Just because you lost? Is that the reason to quit?

Text 4

W: Excuse me, could you tell me where the nearest ATM is?

M: It’s next to the hospital over there. You can walk there just within 5 minutes.

Text 5

M: My girlfriend is like Google.

W: Because she knows everything?

M: No. Because she has everything I’m searching for.

Text 6

M: Good morning. This is Monterey Bay Inn. Can I help you?

W: Good morning. I’m calling to cancel my reservation.

M: OK. Can you tell me the dates for it?

W: They are… January 29th through February 1st.

M: Got it. Er…Would you like to book a room for another day? We have a special deal in March. If you book a room for two days, you can get the third day for free.

W: I see. I’ll consider it later.

M: Well, there will be two hundred and eighty dollars returned to you. Would you like me to put it back on your Visa?

W: Yes. Thanks a lot.

Text 7

W: Hi, Mike! Now that the midterms are over, some of us are planning to go boating this weekend. You want to come along?

M: Sounds great, but I’ve never done it before.

W: Oh, come on! None of the others have either except me. And this is our last chance to take a break before finals.

M: Yeah, what shall I have to bring then?

W: In fact, I wish we could take your car there. Mine’s in the repair shop again.

M: Oh, I see. It’s not me you want, it’s my car.

W: Don’t be silly. So what would you say?

M: Oh, why not!

W: Great! I’ll give you a call when I find out when everyone wants to leave on Friday.

M: OK!

M: It’s a great art show, isn’t it? By the way, I’m Jim.

W: Yes, it’s successful. I’m Nancy. Nice to meet you.

M: Me too. Are you from France?

W: Actually, I was born in London, and I grew up in Paris. What about you?

M: Oh, I’m a local man in New York. I’m an art teacher in New York University. This art show is held by my students.

W: Really? Great! I’m a student majoring in piano performance in the same college. I’ll hold a piano party next Saturday night at the Silver Bar. Would you like to come?

M: I’d love to. Could I take my daughter with me? Besides painting, she is fond of piano as well.

W: Sure.

Text 9

W: Hello, Frank. Your roommate told me that I could find you here in the TV studio. Sure enough!

M: I was just taking a break. What’s up?

W: We’ll have a math test next Monday, so I thought you’d be studying for it and maybe I can study with you.

M: But I can’t believe you are coming to me. I mean you do know what I got on the last test, don’t you?

W: Yeah, I know. You told me, but I thought two heads might be better than one.

M: Well, that’s a nice idea. But I wish I knew the person in our class who got a hundred on the last test. She even didn’t miss any question, you know! Umm, was it Elizabeth?

W: Oh yeah, Elizabeth! She is a good friend of mine. I think she’d be a big help to us right now. Why don’t we give her a call?

M: What? At this hour? It’s already ten thirty. It’s too late.

W: But you know she owes me a big favor. Let’s at least give her a call and see what she says. Maybe going over some of the problems with us would also help her review the material.

M: You’re right. Anyway, it’s worth a try.

Text 10

Skin is very important for the body. It’s the body’s first front to fight diseases. It keeps out many harmful materials and also keeps all the things we need in our bodies. The skin helps control body temperature. It can help make the body cool when it gets too hot. And when a person gets too cold, blood passages in the skin become narrow, which helps to keep heat inside the body.

However, like other parts of the body, the skin can have problems. It’s very easy for teenagers to have certain skin problems on the face. Some people think eating chocolate or food with too much oil can cause skin problems. Others think that skin problems are caused by dirty skin or being nervous. However, experts tell us none of these causes skin problems. So what does? Doctors are not sure. Young people will not be happy about this fact—skin problems increase when boys and girls enter their teenage years.

There are several treatments for skin problems. Mild cases are generally treated with medicines that can be used directly on the skin. People with more serious skin problems may be given drugs to take by mouth. Or they might use other choices of treatments.
