第二部分: 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节:(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

  1. When I recall my experiences of feeling hard and deeply understood by someone, I know
how much the experience helped me to cope with whatever I was dealing with at the time. Caring people who I have turned to in difficult times helped me the most by listening and asking about my feelings.
During one of my volunteer jobs at a local HIV and Cancer clinic,I found the helpfulness of empathic(感情移入的)listening. As a volunteer I was providing emotional support to people with health related problems. Empathic listening really made a difference on how patients felt about their health problems. By sharing about their pain and suffering and my willingness to listen they felt less alone.
We can make life easier for each other by becoming a better listener and encourage each other to share about our feelings. We can become a better listener by avoid giving advice and trying to solve problems unless we are asked to do so. Pressuring others to solve their life problems “our ways” is not helpful. Most people intuitively (凭直觉地know how to solve their own problems. As a listener it's important to be patient and not interrupt the speaker. Let them know it's OK to talk about their feelings and support them in feeling their feelings.
When one does not share nor reach out for support, he or she can remain a lonely mystery. Life can feel lonely when one keeps everything inside. Feeling alone with life problems can feel worse than the problem itself. When we let a caring person listen to our life struggle, we no longer feel alone with our struggle. Don't be afraid asking your loved ones to take time and hear you out. Sometimes you have to ask for it. People cannot read your mind. Confiding in(trust) others can have a positive effect on our mood.
21.What made the author comfortable in difficult times?
    A.Persuading.B.Sharing.
    C.Apologizing.D.Complaining.
22.According to the second paragraph, we can know that________.
A.the patients enjoyed listening to the author
B.the author was really very kind and honest
C.the patients got on well with the author
D.the author did a good job at a Cancer clinic.
23.If someone falls in feeling problems, you'd better________.
    A.listen to him/her patiently. B.give him/her some practical advice.
C.let out your bad feelings on him/her. D.present your opinion on the problem.
24.What's the main idea of this passage?
A.Listening and sharing can make you happier.
B.The author would like to listen to others.
C.It is wrong to give advice to solve problems.
D.You should be confident in front of other people.
    B.

President Coolidge’s statement, “The business of America is business”, still points to an important truth today – that business institutions have more prestige(威望) in American society than any other kind of organization, including the government. Why do business institutions possess this great prestige?

One reason is that Americans view business as being more firmly based on the ideal of competition than other institutions in society. Since competition is seen as the major source of progress and prosperity by most Americans, competitive business institutions are respected. Competition is not only good in itself, it is the means by which other basic American values such as individual freedom, equality of opportunity, and hard work are protected.

Competition protects the freedom of the individual by ensuring that there is no monopoly (垄断)of power. In contrast to one, all-powerful government , many businesses compete against each other for profits. Theoretically , if one business tries to take unfair advantage of its customers, it will lose to competing business which treats its customers more fairly. Where many businesses compete for the customers’ dollar, they cannot afford to treat them like inferiors or slaves.

A contrast is often made between business, which is competitive, and government, which is a monopoly. Because business is competitive, many Americans believe that it is more supportive of freedom than government, even though government leaders are elected by the people and business leaders are not. Many Americans believe, then, that competition is as important, or even more important, than democracy in preserving freedom.

Competition in business is also believed to strengthen the ideal of equality of opportunity. Competition is seen as an open and fair race where success goes to the swiftest person regardless of his or her social class background. Competitive success is commonly seen as the American alternative to social rank based on family background. Business is therefore viewed as and expression of the idea of equality of opportunity rather than the aristocratic (贵族的)idea of inherited privilege.

28. The underlined statement in paragraph 1. “The business of America is business” probably 件means “ ________”.

A. The business institutions in America are concerned with commerce.

B. Business problems are of great importance to the American government.

C. Business is of primary concern to Americans.

D. America is a great power in world business.

29. Americans believe that they can realize their personal values only_______.

A. when given equality of opportunity B. through doing business

C. by protecting their individual freedom D. by way of competition

30. Government is believed to differ strikingly from business in that government is characterized by _______.

A. its absolute control of power B. its function in preserving personal freedom

C. its role in protecting basic American values.

D. its democratic way of exercising leadership

31. It can be inferred from the passage that the author believes _________.

A. Americans are more ambitious than people in other countries.

B. in many countries success often depends on one’s social status.

C. American businesses are more democratic than those in other countries.

D. businesses in other countries are not as competitive as those in America.

D.

The oldest forms of medicine are enjoying a comeback. Modern holistic (整体的) medicine is an approach that treats the whole patient, not just the disease. It is a way to maintain good health rather than cure illness. The most important influences on today’s holistic medicine are ancient Chinese medicine and Indian Ayurvedic medicine, both of which promoted whole body health.

Holistic medicine usually combines diet, physical exercise and meditation, together with other alternative techniques such as massage (按摩) and acupuncture (针炙). Herbal treatment, a practice of treating illness by using plants, is influenced by the writings of Culpeper as well as Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Homeopathy is one of the forms of holistic medicine which is widely practiced in Europe and the USA. Homeopathy began in Germany in the early 1800s, when Samuel Hahnemann described how very tiny doses (剂量) of a drug had an effect on his patients. According to Hahnemann, the more the drug was diluted (稀释), the stronger its effects. The substance selected would produce similar effects to the disease itself if given in large doses. In the UK homeopathy is regarded as a non-traditional but just about acceptable treatment.

Meditation and contemplation have an important role in holistic medicine. They were brought to Europe by Indian teachers who combined Indian Ayurvedic medicine with Western beliefs. Transcendental meditation is one of the best known of these techniques. People repeat words inside their head to reach a state of deep relaxation.

The holistic movement has made many doctors look at the whole patient, not just the disease. Life-style, emotional problems and diet are just some of the factors that can affect a person’s health. Holistic medicine emphasizes good diet, exercise and fresh air, all of which contribute to health. Some clinics now offer holistic medicine along with traditional treatments, so that their patients can choose a combination of treatments that suits them. One problem with holistic medicine is that it is difficult for people to be sure a doctor is reliable. To solve this, many countries want alternative doctors to form professional bodies.

32. Modern holistic medicine centers upon .

A. curing a diseaseB. herbal treatment

C. continuous developmentD. keeping patients healthy

33. The principle of homeopathy is that .

A. the large doses of medicine that will not be harmful will take better effect

B. the disease will be cured sooner by taking larger doses of medicine

C. a small thinner dose of medicine will be more effective

D. the doses of medicine depend on how serious the illness is

34. Which of the following titles best sums up the passage?

A. Holistic MedicineB. Traditional Medicine Returns

C. History of Medicine D. Combination of Treatments Works

35. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Relaxation is the key of holistic treatment.

B. Holistic medicine needs to become more trustworthy.

C. Holistic treatment is more beneficial than traditional treatments.

D. Holistic medicine will become the most welcome treatment soon.

Happiness is a Journey

We always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, than another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. 36 .
We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together. when we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nice vocation when we retire. 37 .If not now, when? our life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway.
One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said."For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin-real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. 38At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that you have.
39So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school; until you get married, until you get divorced; until you have kids; until you retire; until you get a new car or home; until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy….
40 .So, work like you don't need money, love as you've never been hurt, And dance as no one's watching.

A .Looking back, it’s really an extraordinary journey.

B. The truth is, there's no better time than right now.

C. And remember that time waits for no one.

D. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.

E. The more you have the sense of belonging, the happier you will be.

F. Happiness is a journey, not a destination.G. Then life would begin.

It wasn't a very 50 street, so I didn't see many people. Just as I was starting to give up, a few people stopped by my car and then helped push me out of the snow bank. It was one person at first, and then a few others.

Then, on the way to my destination, another lady got stuck. 51 , I got out and was 52 to offer the same help that I had received. At least five others joined me in my 53 to get her car unstuck. It is kind of storm that makes roads undrivable. South Bend 54 up getting over 3 feet of snow.

第II卷

第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)

阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(只能填一词)或括号内单词的正确形式(不多于3个单词)。

As you are probably aware, the latest job market news isn’t good. Unemployment is still more than 9 percent, and new job growth has fallen close to zero. That’s bad for the economy, of course. And it may be especially 61 (discourage) if you happen 62 ( look) for a job or hoping to change careers right now. But it actually shouldn’t matter to you nearly as much as you think.

That’s because job growth numbers don’t matter to job 63 (hunt) as much as job turnover (人员更替) data. After all, existing jobs open up every day due to promotions, resignations, firings and retirements. In both good times and bad, turnover creates more openings than economic growth 64.

I don’t mean to suggest that overall job growth doesn’t have an impact on one’s ability to land a job.

But65 often distinguishes those who land jobs from those who don’t is their ability to stay motivated. They’re willing to do the hard work of identifying their valuable skills; be 66 (create) about where and how to look; learn how to present 67 to potential employers; and keep 68 ( go) , even after repeated rejections.

So don’t let the headlines fool you into giving up. Four million people get_69( hire) every month in the U.S. You can be 70 of them.

书面表达:

Early in the morning, we gathered at the school gate at 6 and headed for the Sunshine Mountain. Our goal was to reach the top, so we could see the beautiful view.

The hike was exhausting and the heat drained our energy. When we finally reached our destination, the whole view was breathtaking. It was well worth the extra effort because we not only got relaxed by enjoying the beauty of nature but also we learned how to smooth away difficulties, help each other as well as build our bodies.

In the near future, we each will have our own mountain to climb. Let’s go forward and set a greater goal and aim at a higher top of the mountain in our life

M: My name is Karl Fischer. I have an interview at 2:00 with Mr. Welsch. I’m a little bit early.

W: Are you here for a job interview?

M: That’s right. Have you had a lot of interviews today?

W:Well, 8 in total, including you. I think actually that you are the last person Mr. Welsch is going to interview. Right now I need to have you fill out a few forms, if you don’t mind.

M: Oh, sure.

W: On this form, you need to put your name and address, as well as your telephone number. By the way, are you currently employed?

M: Yes, I am. I am currently at the university right now. I’m working on teaching materials development for the Department of English.

W: Well, it sounds like you are a good candidate for the job! Do you need a pen?

M: No, I have one. Can I just sit over there while I fill out these forms?

W: Yes, and I’ll let you know when Mr. Welsch is ready for you.

W: This is Suzie Chu on Three Triple Campus Radio. I have the results of the entertainment survey we did last week with the students here at the university.

We went into the student union last Thursday, the twenty-fifth of March and interviewed a total of 150 students. 70% of the students we talked to said that they liked going out with friends more than anything else. I had expected them to say doing sports or listening to music or something like that.

Next on the list … and I wasn’t surprised at all by this … was watching TV. Most students spent 15 hours a week doing that. Going to the cinema was pretty popular too and so was watching sports, but something that surprised me was that some students considered shopping to be entertainment.

So what don’t students like doing? Well, although quite a lot of them like acting and even belong to the acting club, surprisingly enough going to the theater was not very popular at all. In fact, it came bottom of the list! Why? It could be because a lot of students really do have financial problems. Most students spent between £12 and £35 a week on entertainment and this represents about a quarter of their total budget. The main problem was that there was no transport into the town so it was hard getting to the theater. In fact a lot of students complained about that, so it would be great if there was some way a theater could be built or even just a space set aside for performances here in the student union.
