      B
It is that time of year when people need to lock their cars. It’s not because there are a lot of criminals running around stealing cars. Rather, it’s because of the good-hearted neighbors who want to share their harvest. Especially with this year’s large crop, leaving a car unlocked in my neighborhood is an invitation for someone to stuff it full of zucchini(西葫芦).
My sister-in-law, Sharon, recently had a good year for tomatoes. She and her family had eaten and canned so many that they began to feel their skin turn slightly red. That’s when she decided it was time to share herblessings. She started calling everyone she knew. When that failed, she began to ask everyone in the neighborhood like a politician, eventually finding a neighbor delighted to have the tomatoes. “Feel free to take whatever you want,” Sharon told her. She felt happy that she could help someone and that the food didn’t go to waste.
A few days later, Sharon answered the door. There was the neighbor, holding some bread. The neighbor smiled pleasantly, “I want to thank you for all of the tomatoes, and I have to admit that I took a few other things and hope you wouldn’t mind.”
Sharon couldn’t think of anything else in her garden that had been worth harvesting and said so. “Oh, but you did,” the neighbor said. “You had some of the prettiest zucchini I’ve ever seen.”
Sharon was confused. Zucchini in her garden? They hadn’t even planted any zucchini. But her neighbor insisted that there really were bright-green zucchini in her garden. The two of them walked together into the backyard. When the neighbor pointed at the long green vegetables, Sharon smiled, “Well, actually, those are cucumbers that we never harvested, because they got too big, soft and bitter for eating or canning.”
The neighbor looked at Sharon, shock written all over her face. Then she smiled, and held out the bread that she had shared all over the neighborhood, “I brought you a loaf of cucumber bread. I hope you like it.”
      24. Why does the author suggest that people in the neighborhood should lock their cars?
      A. They might be stolen by thieves.
      B. They might be moved away by the police.
      C. Their neighbors might fill them with their harvest.
      D. Their neighbors might throw rubbish in them.
      25. What does the underlined word “blessings” in the second paragraph mean?
      1. tomatoes.B. God’s protection.C. helpful things.D. best wishes.

26. What did the neighbor do in Sharon’s garden?

A. She harvested tomatoes only.

B. She harvested zucchini by accident.

C. She took some cucumbers mistakenly.

D. She stole something without Sharon’s permission.

27. We can infer from the article that the neighbor’s bread would taste ________.

  1. bitter but tastyB. strange and bitter

C. hard and sourD. soft and sweet

C

You’ll probably never go to Mars or sing to the stage with the Rolling Stones. But if Virtual reality(VR) ever lives up to its promise, you might be able to do all these things—and many more—without even leaving your home. Unlike real reality, virtual reality means simulating bits of our world. Apart from games and entertainment, it’s long been used for training airline pilots and surgeons and for helping scientists to figure out complex problems such as the structure of protein molecules. Then how does it work?

Close your eyes and think of virtual reality and you probably picture something like this: a man wearing a wrap-around headset and data gloves wired into a powerful workstation or supercomputer. What distinguishes VR from an ordinary computer experience is the nature of the input and output. Where an ordinary computer uses things like a keyboard, mouse, or speed recognition for input, VR uses sensors that detect how your body is moving. And where a PC displays output on a screen, VR uses two screens (one for each eye), surround-sound speakers, and maybe some forms of touch and body feedback as well.

VR has been routinely used by scientists, doctors, dentists, engineers, architects, archaeologists, and the military for about the last 30 years. Difficult and dangerous jobs are hard to train for. How can you safely practice taking a trip to space, making a parachute jump, or carrying out brain surgery? All these things are obvious candidates for virtual reality applications.

Like any technology, virtual reality has both good and bad points. Critics always raise the risk that people may be addicted to alternative realities to the point of ignoring their real-world lives—but that criticism has been leveled at everything from radio and TV to computer games and the Internet. Like many technologies, VR takes little or nothing away from the real world: you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to.

28. What equipment do we need for virtual reality?

A. A keyboard, a headset and a supercomputer.

B. A headset, data gloves and a supercomputer.

C. A headset, data gloves and a speech recognition.

D. A keyboard, a mouse and a speech recognition.

29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A. The advantages of virtual reality.

B. The influence of virtual reality.

C. The importance of virtual reality.

D. The applications of virtual reality.

30. What is the writer’s attitude towards VR?

  1. Cautious.B. Appreciative.C. Doubtful.D. Uninterested.

31. According to the passage, virtual reality means _______.

A. experiencing things that don’t really exist

B. creating something that doesn’t exist

C. imagining beautiful things in our mind

D. cloning something that has died out

D

Almost everyone agrees on the hot dog basics: a long bread roll with a hot sausage inside it. And that’s what has led to a big question---is a hot dog a sandwich, or is it in a special category of its own?

“People have really strong opinions on both sides,” says Eric Mittenthal, president of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC). In November, the council published an official announcement ruling that the hot dog is not a sandwich. It argues that the hot dog is too significant to be considered “just a sandwich”. The council admits that the hot dog was once the “Frankfurter(法兰克福香肠) sandwich,” but says that people no longer use that name. Today, no one would call a hot dog eating contest a sandwich eating contest.

But others disagree. The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) includes a sausage inside a bread roll in its sandwich category. But it also calls the food a “sandwich type product.” In May, dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster said that the hot dog is a sandwich. The Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11thEdition, defines a sandwich as “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between” or “one slice of bread covered with food.” The announcement fueled a heated debate among hot dog fans. If hot dogs are sandwiched, where do you draw the line? Are burritos(玉米馅饼) sandwich too?

This debate won’t stop Americans from eating piles of hot dogs this summer. During peak hot dog season—from Memorial Day to Labor Day—Americans will eat about 7 billion of them. That’s 818 hot dogs consumed every second. People love hot dogs so much that in 2015, a hot dog emoji (a small image used in electronic communications) was released so people can easily tweet or text an image of the famous food. This may come in handy soon, since July is National Hot Dog Month.

32. Who thinks that the hot dog is special enough to be in a category of its own?

  1. USDA.B. NHDSC.C. The author.D. Merriam-Webster.

33. What do some hot dog fans think of the definition of a sandwich in the mentioned dictionary?

A. It seems too wide.B. It is quite satisfactory.

C. It is obviously too narrow.D. It is difficult to understand.

34. What can we learn from the release of a hot dog emoji?

A. The emoji is beautiful.B. The emoji is interesting.

C. The hot dog is very popular.D. The hot dog is world famous.

35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. The history of hot dogs.B. Is a hot dog a sandwich?

C. Different kinds of sandwiches.D. How Americans love hot dogs.

How to become a better reader

Language and literacy(读写能力) are among mankind’s greatest inventions. Evolving and even dying over the course of human history, languages are a reflection of our cultural and societal attitudes. Most humans acquire language in early childhood and speak fluently when they are about three years old, but our continued relationship with language gives shape and meaning to our lives.36

  • Take it slow.
Many readers feel that they read too slowly, especially compared with others, but the truth is that the faster you read, the less likely you are to comprehend what you’re reading.37Reading is a lifelong process; learning to read closely and slowly will help you become faster over time without missing anything.
  • 38
When humans first began reading written words, it was unusual to read in silence. Though generally inappropriate for commuters or for late-night adventurers, reading out loud is one of the best ways to improve your reading ability.39If so, you will begin to read more accurately and with better vocal expression. Try listening to the author reading their own work---you’ll be surprised to find how clearly it comes through on the page.
  • Write

40How and what you read affects how and what you write, and the best readers often make the best writers. But while much can be learned from close, repeated readings, there are many secretive pleasures to language that can only be experienced through the practice of writing.

  1. Read aloud.
  2. Get into the rhythm of the author’s voice.
  3. Here are three ways to become a better reader.
  4. Writing and reading go hand-in-hand.
  5. Try writing every day for a month; you will never read the same again.
  6. The ability to read is important to form an identity and express one’s feelings.
  7. In that case, do not hesitate to re-read the passage.
