第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出一个最佳选项。

A

It was my first day back home since starting college. A lot had changed in the last year. Not with my hometown but with me. I had left as a 17-year-old boy and had now returned as an 18-year-old man. In the city, I was living on my own, had a part-time job and was studying. Even the government recognized I was an adult; I had a driver’s license. So here I was, on my summer vacation, walking down the main street with my father, desperate for him to acknowledge that I was an adult. When his recognition failed to appear, I took matters into my own hands. “Dad,” I said casually, “I’m thirsty. Let’s go for a beer.” It was the first time I’d ever mentioned beer in front of my father, let alone ask him to drink one with me.

He turned to me with a curious expression on his face. “A beer? Well I guess you’re old enough now. Let’s go to Sailors’ Bar. It’s where my cousin Tom, your uncle, used to drink. You remember him, right?”

I had only some vague recollection of my uncle. He was the black sheep of the family. We didn’t talk about him much. “What ever happened to Uncle Tom, Dad? I haven’t seen him in years,” I said as we continued towards the bar.

“Neither have I, unfortunately. He was a good kid once. But things changed,” my father said mournfully. As a boy, he explained, there had been no better-behaved boy than Tom. But after leaving school, he moved to the city and fell in with bad company. He started going out every night, drinking in nightclubs and playing cards. Soon he lost everything and had to beg his mum to pay his debts. She agreed on the condition that he returned home.

My dad took a deep breath and continued his tale. “Things settled down for a while. He married a lovely woman, gave up his bad habits. But it didn’t last. He was soon back to his old ways. He couldn’t resist. He was at Sailors’ Bar almost every night. His poor mother died of grief and shame. His wife followed her soon after.

“What ruined him was alcohol. He told me once, when a man begins drinking, he never knows where it’ll end. ‘So’, Tom warned me, ‘beware of your first drink!’

“He went from bad to worse. Last year Tom sent me a letter saying he had been found guilty of stealing, and sentenced for ten years.”

Dad finished talking just as we reached the front of Sailors’ Bar. “Anyway, here we are. Let’s go in,” he said. But I understood. I put my arm around my father and said, “I’m not thirsty anymore, Dad. Let’s go home.”

41. Why did the young man invite his father to drink a beer?

A. Because he was thirsty.

B. Because he returned for reunion.

C. Because he wanted to show how mature he was

D. Because he wanted to share his first beer.

42. What was the main source of Uncle Tom’s problems?

A. His overly-strict family. B. His casual attitudes about family.

C. The deaths of his mother and wife. D. His inability to control his drinking.

43. Where is Uncle Tom now?

A. In a bar. B. In prison. C. In the city. D. In his hometown.

44. In the story, the father told his son about Tom in order to ________.

A. warn the son to keep away from Tom

B. entertain the son while they walked to the bar

C. keep him informed of Tom

D. convince the son of the harm caused by drinking

45. What is the correct order of the following events from Uncle Tom’s life?

Below is a passage adapted from the network edition of China Daily.

Event

Li Yang, one of China’s most famous English teachers, apologized for beating his American wife more than a week after she posted photos of her injuries on the web and set off a bomb of criticism.
“I wholeheartedly apologize to my wife Kim and my girls for committing domestic violence. This has caused them serious physical and mental damage,” Li said on his microblog at Weibo.com, the country’s most popular social media site, on Saturday. Li, 42, is a mechanics major but is best known for his “Crazy English,” a popular method of language learning that involves yelling at the top of one’s lungs. He was at the center of public criticism after his wife Kim Lee put up posts on the web accusing him of abuse, showing her swollen forehead and knees.

Voices

@Xuemanzi, angel investor
Anti-domestic violence laws should be made as soon as possible, giving protection to the rights of women and children lawfully. Police should not stand back from domestic violence any longer, even if no one reports them. Society, as a whole, should attach greater importance to the crime.
@Zhangxiaomei
Chinese are never taught about marital(婚姻的) relations, which mean not merely living together. A good marriage needs to overcome three differences: family background, gender and personalities. In addition to these, there is cultural gap in Li Yang’s case. If the effects of these differences are not well understood, after the honeymoon period, they will turn into conflicts and endanger the marriage. Li’s domestic violence is a reminder that China needs such education.
@Wuxiaolong, Sina Weibo user
Li Yang’s choice to resort to domestic violence really reflects his character. Students who have attended his Crazy English Camp may know what I mean: Li wants his students to worship him as an idol. I still remember he once had his students kowtow(叩头) to him. He always teaches English by imposition(权威强制), which directly reflects his desire for power.
@Sikaozhe, Sina Weibo user
In the US, the punishments for domestic violence are even more severe than stealing. If the police arrive at the wife’s call during a fighting between a couple and find injuries on her, they will immediately arrest the husband. Even if the wife doesn’t call the police, they may also show up as neighbors could well do their part.
@ykxin Sina Weibo User
Don’t blindly worship anyone, because in every closet there may hide a skeleton. As a famous Chinese saying goes, “Only they who do well in their daily routine tasks can fulfill their dreams on great occasions”. Not surprisingly, one who focuses too much on his career and ignores his family, like Li Yang, will fail in both. Don’t judge a person by his career success, wealth, or any other material aspect, because what finally decides a person is his character.

Aftermath(余波)

Although Li Yang publicly apologized to his wife, promising to love his daughters even if he and Lee divorce, the damage, perhaps permanently, has been done to his wife, his three daughters and the whole family.
Wang Xingjuan, founder of the Maple Women’s Psychological Consulting Center, a non-profit organization, said nearly half of domestic violence abusers are people who have higher education, senior jobs and social status. She said this was probably because such people were often too stressed in life.

46. This passage is focused on Li Yang’s ____________.

A. microblog article B. domestic violence

C. English-teaching careerD. international marriage

47. Zhangxiaomei holds the view that ____________.

A. laws should be passed to prevent conflicts

B. crazy personality accounts for violence and ill temper

C. overcoming background gap is necessary for marriage

D. Living together is what marriage is mainly about

48. Who thinks that character plays the most important role in one’s life?

A. @ykxin B. @Sikaozhe C. @Xuemanzi D. @Zhangxiaomei

49. According to Wang Xingjuan, ____________.

A. people of higher education won’t easily lose temper

B. people under stress tend to have domestic violence

C. people in lower social status often beat their wives

D. people with senior jobs seldom have family trouble

Reading is a great way to improve your English. You'll learn new words, revise previously-taught structures and absorb thousands of useful expressions and phrases... without any effort. By reading, you are receiving valuable language input. And this is how you learn! Remember, language learning is a combination of input + practice. As you're reading, you're taking in language naturally, and you're seeing how it all fits together. This is crucial to your learning.

The great thing about reading is that learning takes place subconsciously. There are no exercises to do, no grammar rules to learn, no tasks to complete... it's all natural. The language flows in through your eyes, and gets registered(记录) in your brain. What could be easier?

The key to effective reading is to read things that you want to read. There are millions of books, magazines and websites out there. You couldn't possibly read them all. So, the important thing is to find things that you like reading. Then, you'll be motivated to read. And then the reading won't be difficult. It'll be easy! And then you'll learn. It's simple.

Remember: read what you want to read. What you like reading. What motivates and inspires you. But where can you start? Well, you could read a book that you've already read in your own language. Simply find a translated version of a book that you have read and enjoyed. This will make processing the content in the target language much easier as you’ll already know what the book is about! You could also read the news. This is great as you can read the news in your own language first, then in English. You'll see that it won't be too difficult as you'll be familiar with the topics and stories. Magazines are also great. Find one that covers a topic you're interested in: business, clothing, guns, horses, houses, housekeeping, stocks and shares, sports, computers, electronics, designing, cooking... you name it, they'll have it. If not, look for information on the internet. There are also websites for every topic under the sun! Why not join a forum? They're a great source of English input as the language is often written in a simple, spoken style. Go to Google Groups, which has discussion groups based on common interests. Just type in the topic that interests you and join the chat.

Finally, how you read is also important. The best thing is to read without using a dictionary. Let the words flow over you. Just skip the parts you don't understand. If you make your reading feel too much like work, it'll stop being fun. Of course, you could make a note of any new words and phrases that you like or see repeated frequently, but try not to break your concentration too much. Also, set yourself mini-objectives. For example, if you're reading a novel, read 20 pages a day. Very soon, you'll have been exposed to thousands of useful phrases and words. Have fun reading! You'll learn so much!

When I heard the piano, I walked to Mrs. Windsor’s house and waited outside as I always did. That meant she was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell. I stood against the wall and daydreamed what I’d rather be doing. “Almost anything”, I sighed dejectedly. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. It didn’t come to me naturally. I thought back to happier times when I was writing stories and acting them out with my friends, cutting up old clothes to make dresses that performers wear in plays, and building scenery out of old things we found. But Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt my duty to try.

The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. I walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music.

“Hello,” I heard a voice behind me say softly. I turned around to see a little girl standing behind me, eating an apple. But before I could make any response, Mrs. Windsor walked into the room in her usual urgent manner and announced, “Jennifer, this is my niece, Pasha. Pasha, this is Jennifer. Pasha will be giving you your lesson today. I’m up to my ears in something else!” she then exited to the kitchen.

Pasha set her apple down on the side table and slid beside me on the piano bench.

“What piece do you like best?” she asked.

“What do you mean?” I asked. “They’re all the same to me. I don’t know.

“You mean you don’t have a favorite?”

“No, not really.”

Pasha looked at me, rather puzzled, then opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys and studied the notes on the page for a moment. Then I frowned and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I have to admit I was a rather mechanical pianist.

After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant.

“Like a story. What story is being playing out within the music?”

“I guess I’ve never thought about it before. I don’t know.”

“Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?”

Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.” A carefree, happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers. “Oh, but she slips!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried off by the fast-flowing stream. Quickly, the princess’s horse sees her plight (困境),” Pasha continued, and races to the river’s edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. They make it to the bank and she hugs her faithful horse and swears she will never again wear princess skirts that weigh her down. She will only wear jeans and T-shirt from now on.” Pasha finished with a big smile and then looked at me.

“Aren’t you the girl who tells the stories?” she asked.

“I guess. I do tell a lot of stories.”

“Oh, yes! All the kids talk about them. I’ve heard about you. Well, all you have to do is learn to hear the stories in the music. That’s all there is to it.”

“I’ve never thought it that way.”

“Let’s try another one, shall we?” Pasha smiled and together we played that afternoon, finding the stories in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again.

Steve Paul Jobs was an American businessman and widely recognized as a pioneer of the personal computer revolution. He was co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Company. His death is a great loss to us. The following is some more information about him.

61.

After Apple's founding, Steve Jobs became a symbol of his company and industry. At the time of his resignation, and again after his death, he was widely described as a pioneer and genius perhaps one of the foremost-in the field of business, creation and product design, and a man who had changed the face of the modern world, completely changed at least six different industries. His death was considered a loss to the world by commentators(评论家) across the globe.

62.

Memorial candles and iPads to Steve Jobs lie outside the Apple Store in Palo Alto, California. Apple has lost a creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve Jobs have lost a dear friend and an inspiring guide. Steve jobs leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

63.

As is still clearly remembered, it was not long before Steve Jobs left his office as CEO of Apple. But he remained at the company as chairman of the company's board. Hours after the announcement, Apple shares dropped by five percent in after-hour trading. The relatively small drop, when considering the importance of Steve Jobs to Apple, was associated with the fact that his health had been in the news for several years, and he was on medical leave since January 2011.

64.

Steve Jobs took a job as a technician at Atari company in California in 1974. He traveled to India in the summer of 1974. Seven months later, he returned to Atari and was assigned to create a circuit board for the game Breakout. With Wozniak, the founder of Atari, Steve Jobs began attending meetings of the Homebrew Computer Club where he got to know Edwin H. Land, the inventor of instant photography and founder of Polaroid Corporation, and modeled his career after him.

65.

Apple announced that it would buy NeXT for $429 million. The deal was finally made in late 1996, bringing Steve Jobs back to the company he co-founded. In order to concentrate Apple's efforts, Steve Jobs stopped a number of projects. With the purchase of NeXT, much of the company's technology found its way into Apple products. Under his guidance the company increased sales significantly with the introduction of the iMac and other new products. Since then, appealing designs and powerful branding have worked well for Apple.

作文

Three years ago I failed an important exam in my life and became a student in an ordinary school. Disappointed as I felt at the shabby campus and the poorly-equipped classroom, I found the teachers patient and considerate. Besides, I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere in class. I decided to make the best of it. I worked hard and got along well with my teachers and classmates. Whenever I had difficulties, they were always available. Soon, I became one of the top students in my class, which greatly increased my confidence and got me motivated.
  My experience tells me that it is not what you are given but how you make use of it that determines who you are.
