Paddling (涉水;划水)out to catch the next wave at a competition in Christchurch, New Zealand, James Tuhikarama had a heart attack, which knocked him off his surfboard (冲浪板).He almost choked to death in the water, lost consciousness, and was soon floating facedown in the ocean.

For a few moments, no one noticed as he drifted away from the main competition area. About that time, Hira Edmonds, 25, a lifeguard and a senior instructor for a surf-safety company, was teaching 14 other lifeguards the finer points of emergency rescue on the second floor of a building overlooking New Brighton beach. Edmonds had watched dozens of surfers ride the waves that day. As he glanced out of the window, he saw someone in a wet suit facedown in the water."It doesn't take much to realize someone's in trouble," says Edmonds."Lifeguards are never really off duty." Edmonds called the team, grabbed first aid equipment, and rushed down to the water. The lifeguards dragged Tuhikarama, 47 and a father of two, to the beach. More than a dozen rescuers took turns pumping oxygen and pressing his chest to start his breathing again. For nearly an hour—far longer than a single lifeguard would have been able to continue the lifesaving technique—the team continued all these. An ambulance finally arrived and took Tuhikarama to the hospital, where he spent a week unconscious in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while his brain and heart healed.

The Most Peaceful Countries in the World

Denmark

Denmark tops the list of the most peaceful countries on Earth since it’s really a safe place to live. Even while Copenhagen was under occupation by the Nazis during the World War Ⅱ, it still did not fight. The point is that people living in Denmark prefer to focus on economic matters, instead of involving themselves in various armed conflicts.

Norway

Many people do not expect Norway to appear in the list of the most peaceful countries in the world. Perhaps, this is because of Anders Behring Breivik, mass(谋杀多人的)murderer, who hit the pride of the country hard. But Norway is one of the world’s most peaceful countries and friendly and safe place to live, with the highest level of human development.

Sweden

Although Sweden is one of the biggest weapon exporters in Europe, the country has a low level of robberies. According to the Global Peace Index, Sweden is one of the most peaceful countries in the world, in spite of the fact that it’s among the world’s top arms exporters. Besides, Sweden has not been to war and has not participated in any combats (争斗)for the whole two centuries.

Iceland

Iceland was also ranked as one of the most peaceful countries in the world, staying out of the main conflicts in the world. Iceland seldom or never hits the headlines and despite the collapse(倒闭)of the Icelandic banks several years ago, the country remains as all amazing place of spectacular natural beauty. Tourists from all parts of the world come to Iceland to view its huge glaciers and raging volcanoes, as well as numerous unique natural and cultural attractions.

28. Why is Denmark one of the most peaceful countries?

A. Danish people focus on economic matters.

D. To invite readers to visit the four countries.

It’s a popular belief that a fish’s memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t recognize you or any of their friends --- every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.

But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago.

In the study, researchers from MacEwan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again.

Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggested that they could remember their past experiences.

In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past “fights”. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence.

Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild.

“If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risks,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.

For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence.

  1. What is the article mainly about?
  1. Fish having very bad memories.
  2. Fish being smarter than we thought.
  3. How fish improve their memory.
  4. What we can learn from fish.
  1. According to the article, people used to believe that _______.
  1. fish could only remember part of their past experiences
  2. fish could remember things that happened 12 days ago
  3. a fish’s memory lasted for only seven minutes
  4. fish didn’t recognize any of their friends
  1. How can fish benefit most from a good memory? They can remember _______.
  1. where to get food and survive
  2. their enemies and fight
  3. where to escape to when in danger
  4. their friends and help each other
  1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
  2. Fish behave aggressively in a fight.
  3. Fish can remember more.
  4. Fish don’t belong to the list of smart animals.
  5. Only African cichlids have a good memory.

第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

On Punctuality

A punctual man is in the habit of doing everything at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment.

The unpunctual man, on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time.

36There is a proverb that says, “time flies never to be recalled”. This is very true.

37Time is more valuable than material things. In fact, time is life itself, and the unpunctual man is forever wasting and mismanaging his own valuable assets as well as others’. The unpunctual man is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters, or to return calls, or to keep appointments promptly. 38He knows that he can’t get through his immense amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every appointment promptly and deal with every piece of work when it has to be attended to.

39If a person is invited to a dinner and arrives later than expected, he keeps all the other guests and the host waiting him alone. This is great disrespect.

40Imagine how it would be if who are entrusted with important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or his fellow men. And the unpunctual man is a source of annoyance both to others and to himself.

  1. Failure to be punctual is a sign of disrespect towards others.
  2. A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be regained.
  3. He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both his time and his good name.
  4. Unpunctuality is very harmful when it comes to doing one’s duty.
  5. Of these the former are the majority.
  6. But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it.
  7. Broadly speaking, humans can be divided into two classes.

书面表达:

Dear friends,

As we all know, we all want to grow up happily and healthily, and for this goal we must do several things.

Firstly, we should develop a good/an optimistic attitude to life. Life consists of not only sunshine but also hard times. We should be brave in front of difficulties. Secondly, we must study hard because knowledge is power. If we have the power,we can help to build our country and enjoy life better. In order to study well, we need to do sports so that we can keep fit. We can go running, play ball games or simply take a walk after a day’s study. If we do those things well, we will be able to grow up happily and healthily.

Thank you for listening,

Text 10

Good afternoon everybody and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me. If not, please let me know. I am Professor John Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can probably tell, this is one of the most popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time this course is offered, this room is very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. Just to mention one figure and there are many, there are about 1 million words in English. If you are an English learner, you may wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing, you don’t have to. No native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides, there are short-cuts. Short-cuts? Yes, for example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French, you’ll understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way, knowing the rules will help you to master a large number of words. This is probably the NO.1 reason why this class is so popular.
