The story of Juno and Lucas is one of the most touching stories about the amazing relationship between humans and their companion animals.
Juno is a Belgian Malinois(比利时马犬). The dog was beautiful but was given up by its owners, as they did not want to take on the responsibility.
Lucas, a little boy, had a strange illness, a condition that stops the body’s ability to process enzymes(酶).As his life continues, he will lose the ability to speak and his physical and mental abilities will degrade till he is left in a vegetative(植物人的)state. The average life expectancy for the patients is 15 years.
Chester, the boy’s father, wanted his child to enjoy his life on earth as much as possible and looked into getting a service dog for the child. However, Lucas wasn’t a good candidate due to his deteriorating(恶化的)abilities, not to mention the $15,000 cost of the animal.
Not terrified by all of this, Chester looked into adopting a dog for his son. He found Juno on a website and drove two hours to meet her. Chester had worked with the breed(品种) in the police force and was familiar with how to train them. He put in patience and hard work, and trained Juno while allowing her to become accustomed to Lucas. Now, not only will Juno not leave Lucas’ side, she is also helping with his illness. Chester said, “She has the ability to notice his neurological changes. Now she reminds us when Lucas is about to have a seizure(疾病发作) or if his oxygen levels drop really low. She has saved him several times.”
Companion animals are beautiful things and they establish a bond that can’t be described without experiences. I know that I held my adopted dog a little closer after hearing this story. There are a lot of dogs out there that need good homes and that won’t be as lucky as Juno. So, if you think you’re prepared, you should consider giving one a nice home.
    24. Chester wanted to find a service dog to __________.

C. accompany Lucas to enjoy his time left D. show their love for the beautiful dog

  2. Juno has gained some skills accompanying Lucas.

  4. Lucas recovered from the disease accompanied by Juno.
    27. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

Career success could be predicted as early as kindergarten, according to a 20-year study recently published in the American Journal of Public Health.
Researchers from Pennsylvania State University and Duke University tracked more than 700 children from across the US between kindergarten and age 25 and found a significant correlation(相关性) between their social skills as kindergartners and their success as adults two decades later.
In 1991, teachers assessed how the kindergartners interacted(互动) with each other socially using a range of criteria like whether they cooperate with their peers without prompting(激励), if they're helpful to others, whether they're good at understanding feelings, and if they can solve problems on their own.
Researchers then kept track of whether the students went on to graduate high school on time, get a college degree, and find and keep a full-time job by 25. They also monitored the participants' involvement with crime, drug abuse, public assistance, and mental health issues.
The results showed that socially competent(有能力的)children were far more likely to earn a college degree and have a full-time job by 25 than those with limited social skills. Those with limited social skills also had a higher chance of getting arrested, binge(放纵) drinking, and applying for public housing.
“This study shows that helping children develop social and emotional skills is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for a healthy future," said Kristin Schubert, program director at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which funded the research, in a release.
“From an early age, these skills can determine whether a child goes to college or prison, and whether they end up employed or addicted."
The good news, according to Damon Jones, lead author of the study, is that intervention(干预) at a young age can help improve social and emotional skills.
“This research by itself doesn't prove that higher social competence can lead to better outcomes later on," he said. “But when combined with other research, it is clear that helping children develop these skills increases their chances of success in school, work, and life."

      28. What has the 20-year study found?
      A. Most kindergartners can solve problems alone.
      B. Helpful children understand other's feeling better.
      C. Outgoing children cooperate with their peers easily.
      D. Social skills play a key role in children's development.
      29. Paragraph 3 and 4 are mainly about?
      A. when the researchers began their study
      B. how long it took to complete the study
      C. how the researchers conducted the study
      D. what factors were studied by the experts
30.What should parents do to help their children to succeed according to Kristin Schubert?
      A. Teach them how to cooperate with others.
B.Teach them some basic living skills.
C.Tell them to keep off alcohol
      D. Coach them in their lessons.
      31. The text makes very good sense to ____________.
      A. teenagers B. educators
      C. doctors D. general readers
      D
It is widely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson's famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson's observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weather-speak.
Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that"To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it." Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.
Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena."The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty." According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.
Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weather-speak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather-speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather-speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank"fillers". In other words, English weather-speak is a means of social bonding.
      32. The author mentions Dr. Johnson's comment to show that ___________ .
      A. most commentators agree with Dr. Johnson
      B. Dr. Johnson is famous for his weather observation
      C. the comment was accurate two hundred years ago
      D. English conversations usually start with the weather
      33. What does the underlined word “obsession” most probably refer to?
      1. A social trend. B. An emotional state.

C. A historical concept. D. An unknown phenomenon.

34. According to the passage, Jeremy Paxman believes that____________ .

A. Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weather

B. there is nothing special about the English weather

C. the English weather attracts people to the British Isles

D. English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty

35. What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage?

A. To explain what English weather-speak is about.

B. To analyze misconceptions about the English weather.

C. To find fault with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.

D. To convince people that the English weather is changeable.

Patience is greatly  important in our daily life. Once, I waited for a bus come at a

stop. 30 minutes passed, but no bus came. Both upset and annoying, I decided to

walk  by foot. But no sooner had I left when the bus arrived. I thought if I had waited

for  one more minutes, I would have caught it. If I chose to take a next bus, I would

have to wait for another 30 minutes. Only then do I realize my problem. Being

Dear Tom,

Thank you very much for your invitation. I’d like to accept it and take this opportunity to introduce the traditional Chinese painting to foreign friends, but I’m sorry to inform you that I can’t.

The reason is that I, together with my classmates, am busy preparing myself for the coming final examination. I strongly recommend my friend Mary, who is the most suitable choice to take my place next week. She began to learn painting at an early age and has a good knowledge of traditional Chinese painting, which, combined with her active personality and perfect spoken English, will help make your activity a success.

Sorry again for any inconvenience caused by my absence.

Best wishes.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

W: That depends. If cellphones can take photos as well as the best cameras, then I’m afraid they’ll completely disappear.

M: But I like using cameras.

W: So you still want to buy a new camera?

M: Yes. I want to go downtown tomorrow.

W: Why not just buy one from eBay? It’s much more convenient and it can save you a lot of money.

M: Well, I like shopping around in a real store. Different people like different things, you know.

M: Well, Mrs. Wang. Do you have a pain in your stomach?

W: Yes, particularly after meals.

M: Let me see your X-ray result. I’m afraid you need an operation right now.

W: Is it so serious?

M: I’m afraid so.

W: operation? What about my heart?

M: Let me feel your pulse. Have you been weak recently?

W: Yes, I get tired rather easily.

M: Have you been losing any weight?

W: I suppose so. The mirror tells me that.

M: Has anyone in your family got heart trouble?

W: Well, both my parents have high blood pressure, and my grandfather died of a heart attack.

M: Your heart is in a rather bad state.

W: You mean I should have another operation some day?

M: Yes, very likely.

People in different countries have their own ways of celebrating May Day. In today’s program, I’ll share some ways of celebrating May Day in some countries.

In France, people touch cows that are walking on the street. They also drink milk directly from cows on the morning of the day. They do that for good luck.

In Greece children go from door to door and sing songs of spring on May Day. They usually receive something to eat from their neighbors.

In England, children visit from house to house. They bring flowers in exchange for pennies. But they don’t use the money to buy anything. They throw them into a wishing well.

In Italy, boys often sing to the girls they love.

So how do people in our country celebrate it? Well, in the US, children ring doorbells of relatives and friends then run away leaving flowers there as a surprise.

That’s all for today. Thanks for your listening.
