Bobby Buns was a very amusing and lively waiter who had his own cafe. He was also very fortunate, because during a visit to his parents’ village he discovered that one of the young cows in the latest herd was pretty special. Instead of producing milk, this cow produced milk coffee.
Intending to make himself rich, Bobby took the cow straight to the city. When he arrived, Bobby's wife told him that first he would have to re-organize the cafe so they had a place to put the cow. Bobby was so excited and impatient that he ignored this advice, and took the cow straight to the cafe. The result was unusually great. The cow was featured in the newspapers and on TV. Customers came from far and wide to taste the delicious fresh milk coffee.
However, after the first excitement, it turned out that having a cow in the middle of a cafe was not at all comfortable. Every day the cow broke twenty or thirty cups simply by swishing its tail. The cafe smelt terrible. The hay the cow ate got spread all over the place, and the cow left so little room in the cafe that there would always be someone getting too close to the cow.
And so the cafe began to lose customers. At last Bobby almost had to close the place. And so it was, that Bobby Buns realized that he had to be more patient and organized. He should wait until everything was ready before serving his freshly milked milk coffees.
However, Bobby was a lucky sort of chap. While the cafe was being reorganized, he took the cow back to the village. There he discovered that one of the new hens laid chocolate eggs. This time he knew he had to be patient, and wait until everything was prepared, so he could have a cafe with a cow, a chicken, milk coffee, and chocolate eggs.
When this was all in place, his cafe became the most famous and successful in the whole city.

When people refer to “sexy”, they usually mean that someone has good looks and an attractive body type. However, 37-year-old Benedict Cumberbatch proves that being sexy is more than just a shallow thing.
Cumberbatch, best known for his role in the popular BBC drama Sherlock Holmes, has been named the world’s sexiest film star by British movie magazine Empire.
His new title took the Sherlock star as a surprise, especially considering that he seems rather ill at ease with his own looks. “I think I’ve got a long face,” he told The Independent. “I look a bit odd.”
However, for his fans, being sexy also means he or she has appealing personal qualities. Cumberbatch is never short on those.
First of all, Cumberbatch is well-educated and he is a talented actor.
Cumberbatch grew up in London. His rich parents, who were both actors, sent him to study at £32,000-a-year Harrow School to become a lawyer. However, when he got there he began reading plays and acting. He clearly made a clever choice for his career. “Benedict’s different look has done him well with the various roles he has been offered as a super-smart detective, a bad guy in Star Trek and the founder of (the secret-leaking website) Wikileaks in The Fifth Estate (which arrived at UK cinemas on Oct 11),” wrote Entertainmentwise.
Despite his serious roles, Cumberbatch himself has a great sense of humor.
No one likes a grumpy actor, and Benedict definitely isn’t that way when talking to people. Just take for example the comment he made about his surname. “Cumberbatch – it sounds like a fart in a bath, doesn’t it? What a stupid old name... When I became an actor, Mom wasn’t keen on me keeping it,” he once told Glamour magazine.
And even though he is successful, Benedict keeps himself modest.
This is not the first year that he has won an award. But the actor has shown his down-to-earth views on these titles. In an interview with The Independent, he said: “I’ve got more goals to achieve. It’s not like I’ve completely conquered the whole thing. That’s a lifetime’s objective, not an overnight thing.”
      55. Cumberbatch thinks his own looks are ______.
      1. hotB. normalC. extraordinary D. not good enough
        56. The underlined word “modest” in Paragraph 9 is closest in meaning to ______.
        A. not dressing fancilyB. not thinking he is the best
        C. aware of his weaknessesD. thinking his competitors are the best
        57. Which of the following is TRUE about Cumberbatch according to the article?
        A. He disagreed with his parents about his career choice.
        B. His parents tried hard to earn enough to pay for his school fees.
        C. His different looks once blocked his way to an acting career.
        D. His mother insisted he keep his surname when he became an actor.
        58. What appealing qualities of Cumberbatch are mentioned in the article?
        a. competitive b. talented c. confident d. humorous e. down-to-earth
        1. abdB. bdeC. bcde D. abcd

It’s said that full moon nights always seem a little frightening. Is there any reason for this?

It turns out that it didn’t come from nowhere – a new study has found that full moons really can cause restless nights, reported The Economist.

To test the moon’s effects on humans, a research team in Switzerland studied the sleep patterns of 33 volunteers. In their sleep lab, there were no windows or any other ways of telling whether the moon was full outside. The researchers watched volunteers’ brain activity, eye movements and hormone levels.

Test results showed that volunteers’ brain activity during deep sleep dropped by 30 percent on nights closer to a full moon. On these nights, volunteers also took about five minutes longer to fall asleep and slept for 20 minutes less. Their levels of melatonin, the hormone that helps control our sleep cycles, also dropped.

These findings may cause the following reaction: “Yeah, I knew that already! I never sleep well during a full moon. Full moons are much brighter than regular ones, which prevents people from sleeping as deeply.”

However, the study accounted for the brightness: remember, volunteers could not see the moon from inside the lab. So what is the cause of the full moon’s unique power?

According to Professor Christian Cajochen of Basel University in Switzerland, the effect may be a relic of old times when humans had to run from predators. “On full moon nights there was more light and so in our past the risk of predators was higher, so maybe we needed to wake up more easily,” explained Cajochen. “However, it is hard to see a use for it in our modern lives.”

In fact, our sleep is not the only thing that changes with the lunar cycle. So does the level of tides. Many animals respond to the cycle too. For example, mosquitoes usually give birth around the full moon. As a result, they bite more on full moon days so that their eggs have enough blood to develop.

59. What does the article mainly discuss?

A. How full moons affect sleep and why.

B. Why full moon nights are thought to be scary.

C. How full moons affect animals.

D. Stories and research about full moons.

60. According to the article, during the test, on nights closer to a full moon, ______.

A. the volunteers could watch the changes of the moon

B. the volunteers’ levels of melatonin dropped by 30 percent

C. the volunteers found it harder to get to sleep and had shorter nights’ sleep than usual

D. the volunteers’ brains were more active during deep sleep than usual

61. From the article, we can conclude that the full moon’s effects on human sleep ______.

A. are because of its brightness

B. may have something to do with the situation of early humans

C. have something to do with changing levels of tides

D. may be different in different areas

62. According to the last paragraph, ______.

A. the full moon is helpful to some animals

B. the full moon affects many things

C. we can never know everything about the full moon

D. scientists are planning further research on the effects of the full moon

Should tipping be abolished? Many are calling for just that, arguing that there’s no connection between better service and better tips, and that tips are often abused.

But can tipping be abolished? History and experts say we’re probably stuck with it.

Efforts to end tipping in the US began as soon as the custom was introduced. Tips are said to have started in 17th century English bars. The concept wasn’t brought to America until the late 19th century, when wealthy travelers wanted to imitate Europeans, and it didn’t sit well with opponents who didn’t like the idea of creating a noble class.

But both servers and diners in the US eventually accepted tips. By 1915, legislators from several states tried but failed to pass laws banning tips.

By the time the Supreme Court said in 1942 that servers owned their tips and didn’t have to give them up to their bosses, it was the basis of a work and dining culture that had become deeply-rooted. A built-in reason to increase restaurant sales led to excellent service. Diners liked “voting” with their tips and in the 1920s and 1930s it provided a way to earn a living wage, especially for women.

Then Congress created the tip credit, which allows restaurants to pay servers less than full minimum wage based on the idea that employees make up the difference in tips. Several states, including California, still require servers to receive the full minimum wage. One argument for the tip credit was that employers could then afford to pay better wages to cooks, who typically make far less than servers.

When in 1989 Berkeley’s Chez Panisse did away with tips and added a service charge automatically to bills, customers were very angry and servers weren’t too pleased either. A service charge isn’t a tip. In Chez Panisse’s case it goes to a general fund that pays for higher wages and benefits for all staff, not just servers.

Nearly 25 years on, it’s still an issue for some customers and servers. Economists say that there’s really no good reason for people to tip - partly because a tip at the end of a meal isn’t going to improve services already provided. However, some people still want and prefer to tip, studies show.

63. What does the article mainly talk about?

A. How tipping culture started in the US.

B. Why tipping is becoming more popular in the US.

C. Measures the US government has taken to get rid of tips.

D. Debates throughout US history about whether or not to end tipping.

64. According to the article, tipping _______.

A. first started in France in the 17th century

B. was quickly accepted by servers and diners when it was introduced in America

C. was considered by some to be part of an upper class lifestyle when first started in the US

D. was banned in some states in the US at the beginning of the 20th century

65. It can be inferred from the article that after the tip credit was created, _______.

A. servers had to give the tips they had received to their bosses

B. cooks began to receive lower wages than servers

C. servers eventually received full minimum wage

D. servers had to offer better service to earn more

66. Chez Panisse added a service charge automatically to bills so that _______.

A. all of its staff could benefit from tips

B. servers could receive more in addition to tips

C. customers would be more satisfied

D. customers and servers would get along better

A video of a man crying with happiness over his son’s improving report card has spread online, with parents around the world praising the father for being so supportive and congratulating the boy on his hard work.

This was posted on YouTube this week by user “ariamark,” a British student who wrote in the description that he was failing math a year ago, but managed to get a C – a passing grade – the first time around.

“(I’ve) never been amazing academically and have struggled throughout school,” the boy writes. “Neither I or my dad or my teachers thought I was going to get my C.”

To catch his father’s reaction, the boy set up a camera and started recording as the dad came home and he showed his report card to him. The response is explosive.

“Is that real?” his father asks. “Is that real?” he repeats, screaming. “My God,” he then yells, immediately bursting into tears and bear-hugging his son.

The man then weeps uncontrollably for a few moments. “Are you sure?” he exclaims. “Yes,” the boy replies. More hugging and weeping then follows as the father closely examines the report card.

“It’s so heartwarming. Any parent can totally understand how he’s feeling,” said Amy Mc Cready, the author of the parenting guide, “If I Have to Tell You One More Time.”

“That was just coming from the heart. He couldn’t control that if he tried… all parents want their kids to succeed and do their best.”

The key step for the dad now is to reinforce and encourage whatever efforts his son took to create that improvement in academic performance: the hard work, the persistence, the extra study time, or perhaps meeting with teachers to get extra help, McCready said.

Because you don’t want to send the message that it’s just about the grade,” she added. “If he worked his tail off and did all those great things – we want to really encourage that because those are the things that he can repeat in all aspects of his life, not just math.”

So what should you do if you’re worried about your child’s grades? Lots of encouragement is the key, McCready advised. Encourage your child to put in the study time and get extra help if needed. But also make sure your kids are responsible and own their own success, she noted.

“However, if the parents are always on the kid’s back and it turns into a big power struggle about the grades then the child is not going to feel encouraged,” McCready said.

  1. What is the article mainly about?
    1. The importance of parents’ encouragement B. The importance of grades
      C. How to be good parentsD. How to improve grades
      68. What does the underlined word “reinforce” in Paragraph 9 mean?
      1. emphasizeB. releaseC. understandD. regulate

69. What does McCready mean by saying the underlined words?

A. Parents always hope to get a clever child.

B. Children can’t only be satisfied with a C.

C. Parents fear their children won’t get a C.

D. Students can’t succeed without others’ help.

70. Which of the following is McCready’s point of view?

A. Parents must encourage their children all the time.

B. Children can’t succeed if parents don’t encourage them.

C. Parents should be responsible for children’s failure.

D. Children must be a self-conscious learner to succeed.
