People in the western state of California who are in the United States illegally can now request a driver's license. The law went into effect on January 1. California is not the first American state with such a law, but it has the largest number of illegal immigrants. More than a million people began to request licenses shortly after the new state law went into effect. Among them was Christian Alvarado. Mr. Alvarado entered the United States from El Salvador eight years ago without permission from the U.S. government. Some call such people"illegal immigrants." Others call them"undocumented immigrants".
Mr. Alvarado thinks it so exciting, for he has been waiting for the license for a long time. But some are worried that their personal information will be used to find them and deport them. Armando Botello is a spokesman for the California Department of Motor Vehicles, or DMV. He says people should not be afraid, for such information will not be shared.
The new licenses are the same as licenses given to citizens except that they have the words"Federal Limits Apply". That means the license cannot be used to travel on an airplane or enter a federal building. Ana Garcia, working at the Central American Resource Center, says some illegal immigrants fear those words will be used to abuse them. Civil rights groups say the police and others will not.
Dan Schnur, a political scientist at the University of Southern California, said that the main argument against the new law is that it rewards illegal behavior. But Professor Schnur argued that young, white Americans generally support immigration reform, including giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants
"It's simply because they grow up in a much more multicultural society than their parents or their grandparents did." Professor Schnur says he believes the changes in beliefs about illegal immigrants that have taken place in California will spread throughout the United States.
    21. Why did the new law make Mr. Alvarado excited?
    1. Because he can request a driver's license.
    2. Because he became a legal immigrant of California.
      C. Because he got his driving license as an illegal immigrant.
  4. Because a law went into effect for the new immigrants.

22. What is the difference of the new licenses compared to those given to citizens?

  1. The words “Federal Limits Apply” will abuse illegal immigrants
  2. They can't be used to travel on an airplane or enter a federal building. C. They can be used to act against the police and other people.

D. With the words"Federal Limits Apply", immigrants can enjoy special rights.

23. What's the public's attitude towards the new law released on January 1 in California?

  1. supportive B. negative C. neutral D. controversial
    B
When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish.” I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?
As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids and the sun hurts their eyes. The more I understood fish, the more I
:**]became effective at finding and catching them.
When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like salespeople.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.
    24. Why was the author upset in the fishing trips when he was nine?
    1. He could not catch a fish.B. His father was not patient with him.

C. His father didn’t teach him fishing.D. He could not influence a fish as his father did.

25. What did the author’s father really mean?

  1. To read about fish.B. To love fishing.

C. To go fishing usually.D. To study fishing in many ways.

26. According to the author, fish are most likely to be found .

  1. in deep water on sunny daysB. in deep water on cloudy days

C. in shallow water under sunlightD. in shallow water under waterside trees

27. After entering the business world, the author found .

  1. it easy to think like a customerB. his father’s fishing advice inspiring

C. his first boss’s sales ideas reasonable D. it difficult to sell services to poor people

C

We all know what a brain is. A doctor will tell you that the brain is the organ of the body in the head. It controls our body’s functions, movements, emotions and thoughts. But a brain can mean so much more.

A brain can also simply be a smart person. If a person is called brainy, she is smart and intelligent. If a family has many children but one of them is super smart, you could say “She’s the brains in the family.” And if you are the brains behind something, you are responsible for developing or organizing it. For example, Bill Gates is the brains behind Microsoft.

Brain trust is a group of experts who give advice. Word experts say the phrase “brain trust” became popular when Franklin D. Roosevelt first ran for president in 1932. Several professors gave him advice on social and political issues facing the U.S. These professors were called his “brain trust.”

These ways we use the word “brain” all make sense. But other ways we use the word are not so easy to understand. For example, to understand the next brain expression, you first need to know the word “drain”. As a verb, to drain means to remove something by letting it flow away. So a brain drain may sound like a disease where the brain flows out the ears. But, brain drain is when a country’s most educated people leave their countries to live in another. The brains are, sort of, draining out of the country.

However, if people are responsible for a great idea, you could say they brainstormed it. Here, brainstorm is not an act of weather. It is a process of thinking creatively about a complex topic. For example, business leaders may use brainstorming to create new products, and government leaders may brainstorm to solve problems.

If people are brainwashed, it does not mean their brains are nice and clean. To brainwash means to make someone accept new beliefs by using repeated pressure in a forceful or tricky way. Keep in mind that brainwash is never used in a positive way.

28. Why did Roosevelt successfully win the election according to the passage?

  1. Because word experts were popular. B. Because he got his brain trust.

C. Because he was smart at giving advice. D. Because he was the brains behind American.

29. According to the text, if you’re the CEO of Bai Du you can be called_______ .

  1. the organ of the Bai Du B.the brain drain of Bai Du

C.the brains behind the Bai Du D. Bai Du’s brain trust

30. Which of the following expression is always used in a negative way?

  1. Brainstorm B. Brain trust C. Brainwash D. Brain drain

31. What’s the main idea of this article?

A. The origin of the word “brain”. B. The word “brain” and its stories.

C. The difference between “brain trust” and “brainwashed”. D. What is the brain.

How to Study Effectively

Never over–study

When you spend too much time studying you will quickly lose focus and the time spent in studying will become “junk time”. You think you’re studying but you’re just sitting there re-reading the same sentence about 100 times and you’re not getting anywhere. 36Taking breaks will make you energetic again and refresh your mind. Besides, it will give your mind some time to take in what you have been doing.

Plan your plan

37 They actually plan what they are going to do. They actually plan the time when they will study and they set goals for what will be achieved. If you want to be successful, do as successful people do. Set a plan, a goal and stick to it, which will create a routine and a routine is the first step towards developing a habit.38

Front up to the toughest work first

Many of us like to do the easy things first to build our confidence. That’s fair enough. The only challenge with this approach is that you use up your primary energy at the start of any study period and so if you are dealing with the easy parts with your primary energy your batteries will be low when it comes the time to deal with the hard part. So what happens then?39 We all do it. We really shouldn’t, though. So develop the habit of giving your primary energy to the hard tasks and completing the easy stuff last.

40

Do we really have to explain this? Just turn them off for an hour. We promise the world will still be there when you log back in! Don’t text your friends, don’t chat while doing memory activities, don’t make phone calls, just focus on what you’re doing. Even if you focus on work for 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of chatting, it’s better than 30 minutes of work while also chatting! You get that right?

  1. Top students don’t just randomly sit down and complete work.
  2. Positive habits decide future success.
  3. Taking breaks can make you get everywhere.
  4. You get tired and impatient and just give up.
  5. They make plans ahead.
  6. Instead, take regular breaks.
  7. Get off social networking sites and turn off the phone.

During his talk, Jack reached for his wallet, pulled out a hundred-dollar bill and said, “Who 62 (want) it?” The audience all raised their hands, 63 (wait) to see whom Jack would choose. However, I ran to the stage and caught the bill. As I 64 (expose) to the audience, I wondered 65 I would be teased by them. But my desire for the money was louder than any 66 (doubt) voice. When I got the bill from his hand, he said, “That’s it! We can’t wait for the opportunities to come to us. We must take action to seize 67 we want.”

第二节书面表达(满分25分)

One possible version:

Dear editor,

With the fast development of e-commerce, online shopping is increasingly becoming an unavoidable part of the young’s life.

That the Online shopping becomes so popular with the young definitely has its own reasons. First and foremost, online shopping usually means something you buy both cheap in price and better in quality. Besides, goods you get online come to you fast as well as conveniently, saving your tiredness of shopping and walking. But the other side of the coin is also true. Goods bought online are not as fine as that from the store which you can watch, feel and smell by yourself. Some online shoppers become impatient or even unreasonable after you have paid for the goods.

In my opinion, we should enhance our e-commerce laws to regulate the activities of online purchase. Meanwhile, as the online customers, we should be cautious while shopping online.

Best wishes.

Yours,

Li Hua
