Then, when he was almost upon it, the tortoise realized the monster was only a great rock. The “Uuh uuh uuh” was just the sound of the wind.

How to Study Smarter, Not Harder

Here are some of our favorite study tips that will help any student study smarter, not harder:

Recite As You Study

Reciting — saying things out loud should first happen as you read through each paragraph or section. Test yourself. This will not only help you to understand but also learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding.

Take Fuller Notes

Notes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words.

Study the Middle

The best time to review is soon after you've learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review.

Sleep on ItStudy before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It's easier to remember material you've just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you've fallen asleep.

Combine Memory and Understanding

There are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by rote(死记硬背). Ideas are best learned by understanding.

The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got puzzled and try again.

29.You can notice your mistakes by ________.

  1. saying things out aloud
  2. taking notes
  3. studying the middle
  4. sleeping on it

30.When taking notes, you should ________ to better help you with reading.

  1. underline important notes
  2. write notes in your own words
  3. take down every detail
  4. write as quickly as possible

31.The writer advises you to ________ as it is easier for you to remember material.

  1. study after a period of activity
  2. do some exercise after studying
  3. study as soon as you get up
  4. study before going to sleep

32.Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding?

  1. Thinking about an idea in different ways.
  2. Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know.
  3. Reading from the beginning to the end without stop.
  4. Going back to what first made you puzzled and start again.

Question: I have been learning English for about 7 years. __36__ And I still can't make myself understood in English. However, I love learning English. How can I learn English well? Please help me.

Answer: Many people have asked me this question. __37__ Here I will give you several tips for learning English.

● __38__

First of all, you must want to learn. If you are not interested in learning English, no class will help you and no book will help you. So you have to be honest with yourself. Ask yourself, “Do I really want to learn English?” If you can't answer “yes” to this question, it is better for you to set English aside until you're ready and willing to learn.

● Set goals (目标).

To learn English well, you must set some goals. __39__ It will also help you to see your progress. Ask yourself, “What are my goals? What areas would I like to improve?” Think about what your goals are, and review once in a while to see that you are making progress toward your goals.

● Practice, practice, and practice.

After you have set your goals, you have a better idea of what you need to practice. Just like the athlete whose goal is the Olympics must train daily, you as a language learner must practice language every day to make progress toward your goal. __40__

A. Want to learn.

B. I think it is not easy to learn it well.

C. Make friends with some Americans online.

D. Reading is a very good way to learn new words.

E. The answers are as different as the people asking the question.

F. The more you practice, the more progress you will make.

G. Having goals will help you remember what areas you want to work on.
