More students than ever before are taking a gap year(间隔年) before going to university. It used to be the “year off” between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon originated(起源) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year.
This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS).
That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good news for everyone in higher education. “Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible,” he said.
But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students (NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student hardship – young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education. “New students are now aware that they are likely to leave university up to£15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree. NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacating periods,” he said.
    21. What do we learn about the gap year from the text?
    1. It is flexible in length. B. It is increasingly popular.
      C. It is a time for relaxation. D. It is required by universities.
      22. According to Tony Higgins, students taking a gap year ____.
      A. know a lot more about their future job
  2. are more likely to leave university in debt
  3. are better prepared for college studies
  4. have a better chance to enter top universities
    23. How does Owain James feel about the gap-year phenomenon?
    1. He’s annoyed. B. He’s puzzled.
      C. He’s surprised. D. He’s worried.
      B
Treasure hunts have excited people's imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island.Kit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues (线索) found in a book when he wrote a children's story, Masquerade, in 1979.The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of “red herrings”, or false clues, to mislead them
Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years.Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he found it by logic (逻辑), not by luck. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words: “One of Six to Eight” under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry VIII's six wives.Even here, however, Williams had succeeded in misleading him.Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him.He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.
Even then his search had not come to an end.It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there.Williams encouraged him to continue, and on February 24th 1982, he found the treasure. It was worth 3,000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.
24.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refers to_______.
      A.red herrings B.treasure hunts
      C.readers of Masquerade D.Henry VIII's six wives
25.What is the most important clue in the story to help Ken Roberts find the hare?
A.Katherine of Aragon. B.Two stone crosses in Ampthill.
      C.Williams' hometown. D.Stevenson's Treasure Island.
26.Which of the following describes Roberts' logic in searching for the hare?
      a.Henry VIII's six wives
      b.Katherine's burial place at Kimbolton
      c.Williams' childhood in Ampthill
      d.Katherine of Aragon
      e.stone crosses in Ampthill Park
      A.a-b-c-e-dB.d-b-c-e-a
      来源:C.a-d-b-c-eD.b-a-e-c-d
27.What is the subject discussed in the text?
A.An exciting historical event. B.The importance of logical thinking.
C.The attraction of Masquerade.D.A modern treasure hunt.

The sharing economy, represented by companies like Airbnb or Uber, is the latest fashion craze. Rut many supporters have overlooked the reality that this new business model is largely based on escaping regulations and breaking the law.
Airbnb is an internet-based service that allows people to rent out spare rooms to strangers for short stays. Uber is an internet taxi service that allows thousands of people to answer ride requests with their own cars. There are hundreds of other such services.
The good thing about the sharing economy is that it promotes the use of underused resources. Millions of people have houses or apartments with empty rooms, and Airbnb allows them to profit from these rooms while allowing guests a place to stay at prices that are often far less than those charged by hotels. Uber offers prices that are competitive with standard taxi prices and their drivers are often much quicker and more trustworthy.
But the downside of the sharing economy has gotten much less attention. Most cities and states both tax and regulate hotels, and the tourists who stay in hotels are usually an important source of tax income. But many of Airhnb’s customers are not paying the taxes required under the law.
Airbnb can also raise issues of safety for its customers and trouble for hosts' neighbors. Hotels are regularly inspected to ensure that they are not fire traps and that they don't form other risks for visitors. Airbnb hosts face no such inspections.
Since Airbnb is allowing people to escape taxes and regulations, the company is simply promoting thefts. Others in the economy will lose by bearing an additional tax burden or being forced to live next to an apartment unit with a never-ending series of noisy visitors.
The same story may apply with Uber. Uber is currently in disputes over whether its cars meet the safety and insurance requirements imposed on standard taxis. Also, if Uber and related services flood the market, they could harm all taxi drivers' ability to earn a minimum wage.
This downside of the sharing needs to be taken seriously, but that doesn't mean the current tax and regulatory structure is perfect.
      28. What is the positive thing about the sharing economy?
      A. It is a global trend.
      B. It draws on spare resources.
      C. It is beyond regulations.
      D. It brings in modest profits.
      29. What is the problem with Airbnb customers according to the passage?
      A. They are not regularly inspected.
      B. They are likely to commit thefts.
      C. They are not allowed to escape taxes.
      D. They can be noisy to hosts’ neighbours.
      30. What is the argument over Uber according to the passage?
      A. Whether it provides reliable services.
      B. Whether it lowers customers' expenses.
      C. Whether it ensures customers' safety.
      D. Whether it can compete with standard taxis.
      31. What will be talked about in the following paragraphs?
      A. Existing regulations and laws.
      B. Necessary improvements of current laws.
      C. More downsides of Airbnb and Uber.
      D. Further development of Airbnb and Uber.
      D
Technological change is everywhere and affects every aspect of life, mostly for the better. However, social changes are brought about by new technology are often mistaken for a change in attitudes.
An example at hand is the involvement of parents in the lives of their children who are attending college. Surveys on this topic suggest that parents today continue to be"very" or"somewhat" overly-protective even after their children move in college dormitories. The same surveys also indicate that the rate of parental involvement is greater today than it was a generation ago. This is usually interpreted as a sign that today's parents are trying to manage their children's lives past the point where this behavior is appropriate.
However, greater parental involvement does not necessarily indicate that parents are failing to let go of their"adult" children.
In the context (背景) of this discussion, it seems valuable to first find out the cause of change in the case of earlier generations had wanted to be in touch with their college-age children frequently, would this have been possible? Probably not. On the other hand, does the possibility of frequent communication today mean that the urge to do so wasn't present a generation age? Many studies show that older parents--today's grandparents--would have called their children more often if the means and cost of doing so had not been a barrier (障碍).
Furthermore, studies show that finances are the most frequent subject of communication between parents and their college children. The fact that college students are financially dependent on their parents is nothing new; nor are requests for more money to be sent from home. This phenomenon is neither good nor bad; it is a fact of college life, today and in the past.
Thanks to the advanced technology, we live in an age of bettered communication. This has many implications well beyond the role that parents seem to play in the lives of their children who have left for college. But it is useful to bear in mind that all such changes come from the technology and not some imagined desire by parents to keep their children under their wings.
      32. The surveys inform us on _____.
      A. the development of technology
      B. the changes of adult children's behavior
      C. the parents' over-protection of their college children
      D. the means and expenses of students' communication
      33. The writer believes that__________.
      A. parents today are more protective than those in the past
      B. technology explains greater involvement with their children
      C. the disadvantages of new technology outweigh its advantages
      D. parents’ changed attitudes lead to college children’s delayed independence
      34. What is the best title for the passage?
      A. Technology or Attitude.
      B. Dependence or Independence.
      C. Family Influences or Social Changes.
      D. College Management or Communication Advancement.
      35. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in this passage?

      多余选项。
      Love and friendship
They are both so much related to each other. And both are so dissimilar! What are the differences between friendship and love? Is platonic(柏拉图式的)friendship possible between persons of the opposite sex? 36
What is friendship? Why do we call a person our friend? When do we call someone a very good friend? If we care for a person, if we are always ready to help that person and if we share most of our thoughts with a person, they are our good friends. We can always count upon our good friends in an emergency. We are always sure that our friends will understand why we acted in a certain way. 37 The friendship is so deep and the relationship is so intimate, that most of the things are automatically understood by our friends.
38 In a relationship of deep love, all the sharing that we discussed above is taken for granted. But love transcends(超出)all this. During love, we are attached with a particular person, while in friendship, one may have many friends. A loving relationship makes one so much attached to the other that one gets pained if his/her beloved is hurt! Love also involves a physical element. 39 This is a vital difference. Nature gives us love so that the species can go forward. Nature does not give us friendship.
Your heart beats will never increase in anticipation of meeting your friend. 40 You will not feel totally lost, if you don’t meet your friend for a few days. You will not have dreams in your eyes thinking about your friend. But in love, you will do all this and much more. Indeed, there is no comparison between love and friendship.
      A. What about love?
      B. My answer is “Yes”.
      C. Let us try and understand.
      D. Friendship does not have that.
  5. We need not explain anything to our very good friends.
  6. You will not lie awake at night thinking about your friend.
  7. The physical element may include hand in hand while walking.

Before we left, Li Yanping explained to me that the force of gravity would change three times on our journey and the first change would be the most powerful. Then we were off. As the rocket rose into the air, we were pushed back into our seats because we were trying to escape from the pull of the earth’s gravity. It was so hard that we could not say anything to each other. Gradually the weight lessen and I was able to talk to him."Why is the spaceship not falling back to the earth? On the earth if I fall from a tree I will fall to the ground." I asked."We are so far from the earth now to feel its pull," he explained,"so we feel as if there is no gravity at all. When we get closer to the moon, we shall feel its gravity pull us, but it will not be as strong a pull than the earth’s." I cheered up immediately and floated weightless around in our spaceship cabin watching the earth become smaller and the moon larger.

When we got there, I wanted to explore immediately. But when I tried to step forward, I found myself carrying twice as far as on the earth and fell over."Oh dear," I cried,"walking does needs a bit of practice in that gravity has changed." After a while I got the hang of it and we began to enjoy ourselves.

Dear Peter,

I’m glad to hear from you. Thank you very much for inviting me to America this summer. I’d like to accept your warm invitation, but I regret to say that I can’t go to your hometown and visit you.

I decline your invitation just due to the following reasons. First of all, it cost a lot to travel abroad, which will add an extra burden to my family. Besides, I plan to do a part-time job in the summer vacation. I can not only earn some money to cover my expenses but also improve my social skills. For the reasons mentioned above, I believe you can understand why I can’t accept your invitation. I hope this won’t affect our friendship from the bottom of my heart.

I want to send a book named China Today to you to offer my apology. You will have a better understanding of China by reading it. Wish you a pleasant summer.

Yours, Li Hua
