    第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
    A
Like all animal species, plant species must spread their offspring (后代) to suitable areas where they can grow and pass on their parents genes. Young animals generally spread by walking or flying. Because plants dont have their ability, they must somehow hitchhike (搭顺风车). Some plant seeds scatter by blowing in the wind or floating on water. Many other plant species, though, trick an animal into carrying their seeds. How do they do this? They enclose the seeds within a tasty fruit and advertise the fruits ripeness (成熟) by its color or smell. The hungry animal collects and swallows the fruit, walks or flies off, and later spits out the seeds somewhere far from its parent tree. Seeds can thereby be carried for thousands of miles. It may surprise you to learn that plant seeds can resist digestion. In fact, some seeds actually require passage through an animals body before they can grow.
Wild strawberries offer a good example of hitchhiking tactics. When strawberry seeds are still young and not yet ready to be planted, the surrounding fruit is green, sour and hard. When the seeds finally mature, the berries turn red, sweet, and tender. The change in the berries color serves as a signal to birds which then eat the strawberries, fly off, and eventually spit out the seeds.
Naturally, strawberry plants (草莓) didnt set out with a conscious intention of attracting birds only when their seeds were ready to be dispersed. Nor did birds set out with the intent of planting strawberries. Rather, strawberry plants evolved through natural selection. The sweeter and redder the final strawberry, the more birds spread its ripe seed: the greener and more sour the young strawberry, the fewer birds destroyed the seeds by eating berries before the seeds were ready.
    51. What does the underlined word in the third paragraph mean?
    A.Spread.B.Eaten.C.Born.D.Planted.

52.For plants, which of the following is NOT a way of spreading their offspring to suitable areas?
    A.Hitchhiking.B.Blowing in the wind.

C.Floating on water.D. Tracking an animal
    53. Whichstrategy (策略) does the example of wild strawberries describe?
    1. conscious intention of attracting birds.
    2. Spreading by walking.
    3. Spreading by flying
    4. Thestrategy of taking a lift.
54.Why does the author describe how strawberry seeds are spread?
A.To show plants are good at adapting to the environment.

      B.To show strawberrysspecialway.
C.To show the plant has different way of spreading seeds.
D.To show the mystery of plant.
      55. Whats the passage mainly about?
      A.How animals disperse offspring.

      B.How plants disperse their offspring.
      C.Plant evolution.
      D.Plants hitchhiking on animals.

Every year more people recognize that it is wrong to kill wildlife for sport. Progress in this direction is slow because shooting is not a sport for watching, and only those few who take part in it realize the cruelty and destruction.
The number of gunners, however, grows rapidly. Children too young to develop proper judgments through the independent thought are led a long way away by their gunning parents. They are subjected to advertisements of gun producers who describe shooting as good for their health and gun-carrying as a way putting redder blood in the veins (静脉). They are persuaded by gunner magazines with stories honoring the chase and the kill. In school they view motion pictures which are supposedly meant to teach them how to deal with arms safely but which are actually designed to stimulate a desire to own a gun.
Wild life is disappearing because of shooting and because of the wild land habitat. Habitat loss will continue with our increasing population, but can we slow the loss of wildlife caused by shooting? There doesnt seem to be any chance if the serious condition of our birds is not improved.
Wildlife belongs to everyone and not to be the gunners alone. Although most people do not shoot, they seem to forgive shooting for sport because they know little or nothing about it. The only answer, then, is to bring the truth about sports shooting to the great majority of people.
Now, its time to realize that animals have the same right to live as we do and that there is nothing fair or right about a person with a gun shooting the harmless and beautiful creatures. The gunners like to describe what they do as character-building, we know that to wound an animal and watch it go through the agonyof dying can make nobody happy. If, as they would have you believe, gun-carrying and killing improve human character, then perhaps we should encourage wars.
56.According to the text, how many reasons cause the wildlife disappears?
      1. 1.B.2.C.3.D.4.

57.According to the text, most people do not seem to be against hunting because __________..

  1. they have little knowledge of it

B.it helps to build human character

C.it is too costly to stop killing wildlife

D.they want to keep wildlife under control

58.The underlined word in the last paragraph probably means ___________.

A.formB.conditionC.painD.sadness

59.According to the text, the films children watch at school actually __________.

A. teach them how to deal with guns safely

B.praise hunting as character-building

C. describe hunting as an exercise

D.encourage them to have guns of their own

60.It can be inferred from the text that the author seems to ____________.

  1. blame the majority of people

B.worry about the existenceof wildlife

C.be in favor of wars

D.be in support of character-building

Pierre is a 25-year-old penguin at the California Academy of science. Due to his old age, he was going bald, which made him feel too cold to swim in the pool. Therefore, biologists at the academy had a wetsuit created for this penguin to help him get back in the swimming pool.

Unlike marine ( 海洋的) mammals, which have a layer of fat to keep them warm, penguins depend on waterproof feathers. Without them, Pierre was unwilling to jump into the swimming pool and end up trembling on the side of the pool while his 19 peers played in the water.

He was cold; he would shake, said Pam Schaller, a senior biologist. Schaller first tried a heat lamp to keep Pierre warm. Then she got another idea: if wetsuits keep humans warm in the cold Pacific, why not make one for Pierre?

Schaller designed the suit, which covered Pierres body, and had small openings for his flippers.

I would walk behind him and look at where there were any gaps, and cut and refit and cut and refit until it looked like it was extremely suitable, she said.

One concern was that the other penguins would reject Pierre in his new suit, but in fact, they accepted his new look. He swam freely and got along with others well, although he was the only penguin with a black stomach.

Schaller couldnt say for sure whether the wetsuit allowed Pierre to recover his fine feathers, but certainly we were able to keep him comfortable during a period of time that would have been very difficult for him to stay comfortable.

Pierre will take off his suit after his new feathers grow back.

61.Pierre felt too cold to swim in the pool because of___________.

A.not having a layer of fat

C.having no wetsuit

D.other penguins rejecting him

A. whether other penguins would reject him

B.if anywhere of the wetsuit needed to be cut and refit

C.if the wetsuit kept warm

D.whether the wetsuit would keep the feathers from recovering

64. What does the underlined word in the second paragraph mean?

A.Feeling scared.B.Staying alone.

C.Shaking with cold.D.Keeping warm.

65.The best title of the passage is ____________.
