Kay and Charles Giddens sold their home to start a bed and breakfast. Four years later, the couple now dishes out banana pancake breakfasts, cleans toilets, serves homemade cookies to guests in a bed and breakfast surrounded by trees on a资*源%库
mountain known for colorful sunsets.
“Do I miss the freeways? Do I miss the traffic? Do I miss the stress? No,” says Ms.
Giddens. “This is a phenomenon that's fairly widespread. A lot of people are rethinking their lives and figuring out what they want to do.”
Simple living ranges from cutting down on weeknight activities to sharing housing, living closer to work and commuting(通勤) less, avoiding shopping malls, borrowing books from the library instead of buying them, and taking a cut in pay to work at a more pleasurable job.
Vicki Robin, a writer, tells us how she deals with the changes in her budget, now far less than what she used to make.
“You become conscious of where your money is going and how valuable it is, ”Ms. Robin says. “You tend not to use things up. You cook at home rather than eat out. You find your life is not a mess anymore, and you discover your living costs have
gone way down.”
Janet Luhrs, a lawyer, quit her job after giving birth and leaving her daughter with a babysitter for two weeks. “It was not the way I wanted to raise my kids,” she says. “Simplicity is not just about saving money; it's about me sitting down every night with my kids to a candlelit dinner with classical music.”
Ms. Luhrs now edits a magazine called SimpleLiving, which publishes tips on how to buy recycled furniture and shoes, and organize potluck (家常便饭) dinners instead of fancy receptions.
“Simplicity is about conscious living and creating the life you want. The less stuff you buy, the less money goes out the door, and the less money you have to earn, ”Ms. Luhrs explains.
24. How does Ms. Giddens feel about the life she is living now?
A. Bored. B. Worried. C. Satisfied. D. Surprised.
25. What does the phenomenon Ms. Giddens mentioned refer to?
A. Serving others. B. Finding a new job.

The ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture could be used to treat anxiety and depression (抑郁) instead of drugs, says a health editor Laura Milne.
It is best known as a treatment for controlling our aches and pains, but few of us know that acupuncture can also be used to treat anxiety and depression. New research by the British Acupuncture Council and the charity Anxiety UK showed that only 10 per cent of sufferers use acupuncture to deal with their anxiety, whereas almost half (49.2 per cent) turn to medication.
Almost all participants of the study (93.8 per cent) said they would be open to trying a complementary (辅助的) therapy, but nearly two thirds (62.7 per cent) were not even aware that acupuncture could help their condition. Anxiety UK believes this could be due to a lack of proper understanding of the condition, the cost of treatments as well as the problems they’ll meet while accessing therapies, especially complementary therapies.
Nick Pahl of the British Acupuncture Council says, “As traditional acupuncture can be highly beneficial for anxiety, we felt it was important to better inform those suffering with the condition about how acupuncture can help so they can make a wise decision regarding their treatment.”
Nicky Lidbetter of Anxiety UK says, “Some members find complementary therapies, including acupuncture, helpful in the management of their anxiety condition.”
Acupuncture originated in China and has been in use for more than 2,000 years and practitioners state that by inserting tiny needles into particular areas of the skin, they can affect the channels of pain that run up and down the body, blocking pain.
Previous research has shown that acupuncture can help ease anxiety by acting on areas of the brain known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as promoting relaxation and deactivating the “analytical” brain, which is responsible for anxiety and worry.
The acupuncture practitioners say the most common form of anxiety they treat is depression (94.9 per cent) closely followed by panic attacks (86.1 per cent) with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) not far behind. Nearly two-thirds of practitioners say that their patients see them instead of previous treating methods and that a significant 87.3 per cent of patients have previously tried medication.
The study also suggests that over two thirds of the UK’s three million anxiety sufferers fail to seek treatment for their condition, admitting that they just “try and get on with things”, even though half of the sufferers state that the condition has affected their career and relationships.
28. Which of the following is NOT the reason why some people overlook the function of acupuncture?
A. They have limited knowledge about the condition.
B. They are not clear about how much will be charged.
C. They are not sure about the possible problems.
D. They are not interested in the treatment of acupuncture.
29. What can we learn from Nick Pahl’s words?
A. The study has negative effects on our health.
B. Education about acupuncture is worthwhile.
C. Traditional acupuncture needs polishing up.
D. People should be concerned about acupuncture.
30. What can we know about the results of the study?
A. When people feel anxious, half of them feel depressed.
B. 50.6% of people suffer from panic attacks when feeling anxious.
C. About three million sufferers find their career affected by anxiety.
D. More than two million sufferers don’t have their condition treated.
31. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?
A. Advice on seeking treatment for anxiety and depression
B. Acupuncture: a normal phenomenon in the UK
C. Potential benefits of acupuncture to anxiety and depression
D. Acupuncture: new hope in treating anxiety and depression
D
As we enter the holiday season there are often many chances to volunteer our time, talents, and money to those who may be less fortunate than ourselves. Collecting food for the hungry, toys for poor children, or working at a local soup kitchen all help others enjoy a better holiday season while they make us feel good too.
Many people report that helping others feels good, often claiming that they get more out of the experience than from those they help.
At Santa Clara University where I am a psychology professor, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring breaks are very popular vacations among students. They work with the poor rather than take a relaxing vacation focusing on their own needs and pleasures. Some of these experiences are based in local social service agencies (such as a local homeless shelter) while others occur overseas.
My students and I have conducted and published several studies where we assessed
compassion(同情), stress management, well-being and spiritual fulfillment( 满足) before they leave for a service trip.
When they returned, we found that the students who help others are not only more
compassionate, but also have higher well-being and stress management scores.
We don’t know exactly why those who help others obtain these benefits but we believe that it may be due to the lessons that they learn while working with those who have much less than they do. They perhaps see that they live better lives than others and thus their hassles and disappointments don’t seem so bad in comparison. How can you be bothered by the size of your dorm room, or the stress of final exams, or by not having the latest iPhone when others are suffering and struggling? These students develop more gratitude and reasonable expectations for themselves when they
compare their lives with those of others.
My colleague, Professor Carl Thoresen found that those who volunteer an average of 2 hours per week throughout their lives have a 40% lower mortality rate (死亡率) than those who don’t. And regular volunteering is related to a longer life.
Doing the right thing for others means helping those in need. Being with them as equals is important rather than behaving in a superior position. It’s the right thing to do for others and it’s the right thing to do for ourselves as well.
32. From Paragraph 1, we know that _____.
33. The underlined word “hassles” in Paragraph 6 probably means“_____”.
34. What would Professor Carl Thoresen agree with?
35. In the author’s opinion, helping others is _____.
C. the duty of everyone D. a win-win situation

Everyone realizes today if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear and nothing will grow in the land. Yet, we continue to use bigger and more powerful machines to cut down more and more trees. 38__________ However, in most countries waste products are still put into rivers or into the sea, and there are few laws to stop this. We know, too, that if the population of the world continues to rise, in a few years, there will not be enough food.
39__________ If we eat more vegetables and less meat, there will be more food available for everyone. Land that is used to grow crops feeds five times more people than land where animals are kept. 40_________ The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control. To make matters bad, now I have to share a room with my younger sister, Maggie. Tomorrow is first day of school. I am awfully tiring, but I know I will never fall sleep. Dear Health Expert,
I have got a problem and I need to ask for your help. I feel I am a little too fat. What's worse, I am putting on weight all the time. I am very worried about my figure and how I look. I even fear that some of my classmates call me names.
At one time, I tried to work out in a gym two or three times, but I finally gave up just because I had no time for it and always felt very tired after doing exercise. Once I tried going on a diet. However, after about a week, I could not go on because I felt so hungry that I was not able to continue my studies. Then I bought and took weightloss pills in secret. Shortly after, they did work and I was losing weight fast. But soon I felt tired and weak sometimes.
I know those pills usually have bad effects on our health. Thus, I don't know what I should do.
Could you be kind enough to give me some good advice!
Best wishes!
