第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

Finding time to enjoy life is becoming harder and harder. As the average workweek lengthens, leisure time drops. Yet some of the world’s busiest people are able to develop rewarding careers and also make time for family and leisure activities. Here is their best advice, plus that of time-management experts:

  1. Use your peak hours wisely.
People tend to be most alert in late morning and midevening. Afternoon brings an increase in sleepiness. Use your high-efficiency hours to handle difficult jobs or engage in creative thinking. For low-efficiency times, concentrate on cleaning up or sorting your mail. By adapting to your mental condition, you can accomplish more in less time.
    2. Make a plan.
Just 20 minutes of organizing can save an hour of extra effort remembering what must be done. “Don’t try to carry your life around in your head,” says Lucy Hedrick, author of Five Days to an Organized Life. “Write things down so you can free your brain for more inventive pursuit (追求).”
    3. Discourage drop-ins.
The person who welcomes every visitor will get plenty of conversation but won’t accomplish much.
The trick is to develop harmless ways to protect yourself from minute-stealing interruptions. David E. Levy, a public-relations consultant (顾问), uses an alternative to the open-door policy by keeping his door half open. The message is clear: he really doesn’t want you to come in, but you can if it is important.
    4. Tame (驯服) the telephone.
Few devices save more minutes—or waste so many more—than the telephone. Signal the end of your conversation with a phrase such as “Before we hang up…” You can save even more time by not taking every incoming call.
Keep a record of when people you call regularly are least busy and call them at those times. Even better, make appointments to call important contacts.
To help us gain an extra hour every day, a clockmaker in Dallas has created a timer measuring each minute at 57.6 seconds. The 2.5 seconds borrowed from each minute add up to an extra 60 minutes at the end of each day.
    21. According to Lucy Hedrick, you should ________.
    1. carry out your plans when you are free
    2. enjoy your life whenever you can
    3. forget everything annoying when taking a walk
    4. stop occupying your mind with lots of things

22. Why does David E. Levy keep his door half open?

  1. To keep unimportant visitors from dropping in.
  2. To show drop-ins are not welcomed at all
  3. To tell drop-ins to come if they want.
  4. To indicate he is expecting a visitor.

23. Who works most efficiently according to the passage?

  1. An editor who is trying to produce a title for his article in the afternoon.
  2. A manager who is designing selling plans with his office door open.
  3. A student in class without taking any incoming calls.
  4. A visitor to a mayor without making an appointment.

Elizabeth Freeman was born about 1742 to African American parents who were slaves. At the age of six months she was acquired, along with her sister, by John Ashley, a wealthy Massachusetts slaveholders. She became known as “Mumbet” or “Mum Bett.”
For nearly 30 years Mumbet served the Ashley family. One day, Ashley’s wife tried to strike Mumbet’s sister with a spade. Mumbet protected her sister and took the blow instead. Furious, she left the house and refused to come back. When the Ashleys tried to make her return, Mumbet consulted a lawyer, Theodore Sedgewick. With his help, Mumbet sued(起诉) for her freedom.
While serving the Ashleys, Mumbet had listened to many discussions of the new Massachusetts constitution. If the constitution said that all people were free and equal, then she thought it should apply to her. Eventually, Mumbet won her freedom---- the first slave in Massachusetts to do so under the new constitution.
Strangely enough, after the trial, the Ashleys asked Mumbet to come back and work for them as a paid employee. She declined and instead went to work for Segdewick. Mumbet died in 1829, but her legacy lived on in her many descendants(后裔). One of her great-grandchildren was W.E.B. Du Bois, one of the founder of the NAACP, and an important writer and spokesperson for African American civil rights.
Mumbet’s tombstone still stands in the Massachusetts cemetery where she was buried. It reads, in part: “She was born a slave and remained a slave and remained a slave for nearly thirty years. She could neither read nor write, yet in her own sphere she had no superior or equal.”

26. What did Mumbet do after the trial?

An 18-year-old girl Anna Meier from Austria is taking her parents to court for posting over 500 photos of her on Facebook since 2009,without her permission.

Anna has apparently become fed up with her parents' refusal to take down the embarrassing photos of her at an early age,and is now seeking justice in court. She told the magazine that evil though she was 11 years old when her parents started sharing her photos with several hundreds of Facebook friends, they went as far as to post pictures of her as a baby, without ever asking if it was alright with her.“They knew no shame and no limit—and didn’t care whether it was a picture of me sitting on the toilet or lying naked in my bed—every stage was photographed and then made public,”the girl said.

The girl added that she was only able to see the photos posted on Facebook by her parents when she was 14,after setting up her own account on it.Again and again,Anna asked her parents to remove the photos of her immediately, but they refused.Angry and upset, she felt that she had no other way but to take them to court, which she did as soon as she turned 18,this year.“I'm tired of not being taken seriously by my parents,”she said.

Anna’s lawyer claims they have a good chance of winning the case in court,if it can be proven that the images have violated her rights to a personal life. But,based on similar cases and according to Austrian privacy laws,if the parents lose, they may be forced to pay their daughter a fine of € 3,000 to €10,000.

But Anna's parents, however, see nothing wrong with posting baby photos of her.“I consider it my right to publish these photos,”her father said.“We have posted no more photos of our daughter since she stopped allowing us to photograph her.We also have baby photos of her that can only be seen by a limited group of 700 Facebook friends.”

A team of researchers from Oxford University in Britain had demonstrated a self-driving car that is obviously different from such cars being tested by Audi, Ford, etc. It’s much cheaper because it’s based on off-the-shelf (现成的) technology wired and controlled by an ordinary iPad. Instead of using GPS to understand where it is and where it needs to go, the car learns routes when a person is driving, and then asks after it’s got it down,if the driver would like the computer to take over.

It’s a radical(激进的) idea, and one that deserves attention, because as time passes it’s becoming clear that people believe computers would be better drivers. It had been proven that computers are able to react more quickly to driving conditions, make smarter decisions, don’t take risks, and don’t make mistakes in focusing. They don’t drink, which means accidents due to drunk driving could be reduced dramatically if the computer could take over when someone needs to get home from the bar. And the team says drivers don’t need their cars to know everything about every road, condition or possible danger. Instead, they just need to know how to get from one point to another, and to do a good job of it when asked.

To that end, the researchers have added cameras, lasers and of course, a central computer to process information and a simple interface (接口), which for now means a regular iPad. In practice, they would learn how to get to and from places that the driver frequents, such as their work place of grocery store. Once it has it down, the computer asks the driver if they’d like a rest, if so, they simply tap the iPad, and the car takes over.

It’s very neat and simple, and doesn’t require nearly the same degree of gadgetry (小机件) as those being tested by other car companies. The researchers say people might be able to get the total price of the system below a hundred dollars. And of course, the iPad can be lifted out and carried away for other purposes when not being used as a driver assist.

$来&源:32 How are the cars tested by Oxford University different from others?

  1. They depend on GPS to understand the location.
  2. They depend on the technology available at a low cost
  3. They should develop a good relationship with their owners
  4. They should remember the places that their owners frequently go.

33 Computers are believed to be better drivers mainly because ____________.

  1. they seldom make mistakes in focusing
  2. they get more skillful in avoiding dangers
  3. they can react more quickly and make better decisions
  4. they are more familiar with every road they go

资*源%库34. We can infer from the text that the iPad _______________.

    A. acts as a interface for drivers to connect with gadgetry inside

    B. has replaced cameras, lasers, and a central computer

    C. will become a new hit since it is used in a self-driving car

   D. cannot be removed when it is not used

35. What is the author’s tone of writing this text?

A. Serious. B. Persuasive. C. Objective. D. Subjective.

六 书面表达Dear John,

I’m extremely sorry to tell you that I am unable to go to your party this Sunday. It is very kind of you to invite me to your house and I really look forward to going to your party and sharing your happy experiences abroad. Much to my regret, I will be absent from your party owing to the fact that the College Entrance Exam is just around the corner, for which I am now really busy preparing.

What’s worse, I have caught a bad cold lately and I’d rather I stayed at home instead of going anywhere.

Anyway, we will have many more chances to get together. Would it be convenient for you if we make it after the exam?

I’m truly sorry. I hope you will forgive me and accept my sincere apologies. I look forward to your reply!

Best wishes,

Yours,

Li Hua
