The old monk sat by the side of the road. With his eyes closed, his legs crossed and his hands folded in his lap, he sat. In deep thinking, he sat. Suddenly the peace and silence was interrupted by the harsh and demanding voice of a samurai.(武士) “Old man! Teach me about heaven and hell!” At first, as though he had not heard, there was no response from the monk. But gradually he began to open his eyes, the faintest hint of a smile playing around the corners of his mouth as the samurai stood there, waiting impatiently, growing more and more irritated with each passing second.

“You wish to know the secrets of heaven and hell?” replied the monk at last. “You who are untidy. You whose hands and feet are covered with dirt. You whose hair is uncombed, whose breath is awful, whose sword is all rusty and neglected. You who are ugly and whose mother dresses you funny. You would ask me of heaven and hell?” The samurai uttered a curse. He drew his sword and raised it high over his head. His face turned red, and the veins of his neck stood out as he prepared to cut the monk's head from its shoulders. “That is hell,” said the old monk gently, just as the sword began its descent.

In that fraction of a second, the samurai was overcome with amazement, awe, compassion and love for this gentle being who had dared to risk his very life to give him such a teaching. He stopped his sword in mid-flight and his eyes filled with grateful tears. “And that,” said the monk, “is heaven.”

The tennis tournament must have attracted many devoted fans to stay up all night, watch the games and shout and yell in front of the TV. However, watching a tennis match in a stadium is very different: while it’s more exciting, it’s not as informal as being at a soccer match. When you watch a tennis match, certain things are expected of you.

In recent years, the dress code for tennis spectators has generally become more relaxed. Those in VIP boxes have to dress more formally, for example, wearing suits. For most audiences, comfort is their main concern. Wear something comfortable such as shorts, tank tops or T-shirts. Light colors are recommended. Wear comfortable shoes because you may have to walk a long way. A hat or a pair of sunglasses is also necessary. Going barefoot or removing your shirt is forbidden.

While cheering is a great part of tennis, booing(发出嘘声) is never appropriate. Tennis isn’t like other professional team sports, where fans are one side and hate the other team. It’s natural for people to have favorite players they want to cheer for, but they should be courteous to the opponent.

Naturally, at some point you may have to get up to go to the restroom or to get something to eat. Tennis players change sides after odd numbered games, and they get a small break at that time. This is the best time to leave or return to your seat. Try not to stand in the aisles at any time. Try not to distract others.

Signs are common in sports, but not in tennis. Holding up a clever sign in an effort to get on TV may appeal, but it can distract the players. It can also be disrespectful to other spectators, if it blocks their view.

Tennis is there for you to enjoy, and if you follow the basic unwritten rules, you will get a lot more out of the experience.

When you've seen a couple fighting or having a pity argument, what is the first thing that comes in your mind? Probably you think that you will never allow arguments to set in your relationship, especially when you get married, or will never think to start one, but arguments seem to come naturally.

You argue about the brand of coffee, or what to eat at lunch, who will do the dishes, etc. Sometimes, more than that, but regardless of your reasons for the argument (or fight), fixing a troubled relationship and having a solution is very important.

Our partners are our most valuable fortunes. Companions provide a listening ear for our troubles, support for our dreams, and a safety net when we fall. They give us love, even when we are unlovable. They are and must be our friends.

Inevitably, though, sometimes we go through troubled periods and a solution should be sought through the following steps:

Address the situation. Admit to your partner that something is wrong and needs to be fixed.

Determine the problem. Together, discuss what problems we are facing. Be honest and let your honesty be in its proper place. Remember, you are talking to your partner, another half of yourself.

Apologize. We accept responsibility for our actions and seek forgiveness.

Refuse to blame. In addition, we must avoid defending ourselves. There could be a temptation to argue over who did what; however, the goal is not proving who is right but saving the relationship.

Begin repairs. Ask,"What can I do to rebuild our relationship?" The key here is to do willingly whatever is requested.

Commit to rebuilding. Immediately start investing your time, energy, and love in restoring the relationship. In order to have a good relationship with a partner who accepts and loves us, we must be willing to pay the high price of patching up the broken relationship. Walking away might seem easier, but in the long run, we would lose a valuable treasure.

A. our partners are our most valuable treasures

39. The underlined phrase in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to __________.

C. encourage people to invest love in a relationship

D. persuade people not to blame those who make mistakes

(D)

Bissel is a small village of the West Sahara. It lies next to a l.5-squarekilometer oasis(绿洲), from where three days and nights are generally required to go out of the desert. However, before Ken Levin discovered it in 1926, none of the people had walked out of the desert. Reportedly, they were not unwilling to leave this barren land, but had no way to walk out of it after they had tried many times.

As an expert of the British Royal College of Sciences, Ken Levin did not believe this viewpoint. He asked the reason of the people here but got the same answer: to whichever direction they went from here, they would eventually return to this place. To prove this parlance, he did an experiment. He went north from Bissel Village and finally walked out from it in three and a half days.

Why couldn’t the Bissel villagers walk out of it? Ken Levin was very puzzled. He had to employ a Bissel villager to lead the way and wanted to find out the reason. They prepared the water that could be used for half a month and two camels, but this time Ken Levin didn't bring his compass, following the man.

Ten days later, they walked for about 800 miles. On the 11th morning, an oasis came into their view. They really came back again to Bissel. This time, Ken Levin came to understand that the Bissel people couldn’t walk out of the desert because they had no knowledge of the North Star. In the desert, if a person goes forward relying on his or her sense, he or she will make lots and lots of circles of different sizes, and the final footprints will be most likely the shape of a tape.

Leaving Bissel Village, Ken Levin brought a young man called Argutel, the man who had cooperated with him last time. He told the young man, “As long as you rest in the daytime and walk towards the brightest star at night, you would be able to walk out of the desert.” Argutel did as he was told. Three days later, he came to the edge of the desert.

Now in the West Sahara Bissel has been a bright pearl, where tens of thousands of tourists come here. Argutel’s bronze statue stands in the center of the town. On the base of the bronze statue a saying was carved.

41. Villagers in Bissel didn’t walk out of the desert because ________.

A. they loved the land where they were born

B. they were discouraged by their failures

C. they believed they had no way out

D. they knew little about astronomy

42. The underlined word “parlance” (Paragraph 2) most probably means ________.

A. theory B. idea C. truth D. argument

43. According to the passage, Ken Levin ________.

A. became the first man to walk out of the West Sahara desert

B. was energetic and physically healthy and strong

C. came to Bissel to do experiments on behalf of his college

D. taught Bissel villagers science and technology after he arrived

44. It can NOT be inferred from the passage that ________.

A. a person depending on his sense always makes mistakes

B. the use of compass was vital in the walk out of the desert

C. tourism in Bissel was greatly developed and improved

D. Argutel was thought highly of by the local people in Bissel

45. Which of the following sayings will most probably be carved on the base of the statue?

A. A long journey starts with the first step.

B. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Take, for example, the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a car accident. The boy began lessons with a judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.  “Teacher,” the boy finally said, “shouldn't I learn more moves?” “This is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the teacher replied. Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the teacher took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient. The boy finally used his one move to win the match.

On the way home, the boy reviewed every move in each match. Then the boy couldn’t help asking his teacher, “Sir, how did I win the matches with only one move?” “You won for two reasons. First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in judo. Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

4. D诗歌属于literature(文学)的范畴,而且根据上文提到reading thick books和there is another way,得知此处指另一种人们阅读文学作品的方式。

5. Crandomly“随机地”,根据解释“without a targeted group or a fixed topic”可推知答案。

7. A根据该句出现的randomly和either …or…这个句型,得知这里应该选一个单词和great相反,因此选unknown(不知名的),干扰项normal(正常的),与之相反的词是abnormal(不正常的)。

9. C根据classical or contemporary的这一对反义词结构,这里选择与domestic(国内的)相对应的词,因此选international(国际的,超越国际的)。

12. C根据edition(版次,版本)这个词,推断这里选publication(出版,出版物)。

14.D根据“sections(部分、章节) such as love, music, nature, war, and loss”,选择classify(分类)。

17. nearer。

Going barefoot or removing your shirt are forbidden. 因此选B,take off their shoes和going barefoot相对应。

因此选A。

根据第四段第句中的because they had no knowledge of the North Star 可找到答案。 选项A与第一段最后句的they were not unwilling to leave…

选项B根据第三段最后句“but this time Ken Levin didn’t bring his compass”推断得出。 选项C可通过最后一段最后句“bright pearl, tens of thousands of tourists”推断得出。

Dear Zhang Ming,

I’m writing to share with you a story that a boy, with his left arm lost, was taught only one judo move, but defeated his opponents because the move, for which the defense was to grab one’s left hand, turned his weakness into strength.

I also have weaknesses and what frustrates me most is that I have a strong local accent when I am speaking English. Much as I like to communicate with foreigners, I find it difficult to make myself understood. Worst still, I am often laughed at when asked to answer questions in class.

Despite the fact that I am poor at my spoken English, I don’t give up. Instead, I try to build up my confidence by doing more practice, such as listening to some BBC news, imitating the pronunciation of native speakers, reading some English aloud every morning. Besides, I talk to some of my close friends in English so that they can help me with some improvements in my speech.

My dearest friend, positively face your weakness and you are certain to overcome the difficulty. Wish you great progress in your English study.

Yours,

Li Hua
