Ⅱ 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

If you have ever been discouraged because of failure, please read on.For often, achieving what you set out to do is not the important thing. Let me explain.

Two brothers decided to dig a deep hole behind their house. As they were working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch.

“What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors.

“We plan to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” one of the brothers volunteered excitedly.

The older boys began to laugh, telling the younger ones that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible.

After a long silence, one of the diggers picked up a jar full of spiders(蜘蛛), worms and a variety of insects. He removed the lid and showed the wonderful contents to the visitors who were laughing them.

Then he said quietly and confidently, “Even if we don’t dig all the way through the earth, look what we found along the way!”

Their goal was far too ambitious, but it did cause them to dig. And that is what a goal is for---to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen; in other words, to set us to digging!

But not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end successfully. Not every relationship will carry on. Not every hope will come to pass. Not every love will last. Not every attempt will be completed. Not every dream will be realized.

But when you fall short of your aim, perhaps you can say, “Yes, but look at what I found along the way! Look at the wonderful things which have come into my life because I tried to do something!”It is in the digging that life is lived. And I believe it is joy in the journey, in the end, that truly matters.

This is an excerpt (摘录) from Ric Elias’ speech at TED. He and other passengers on board luckily survived after his plane crashed in 2009.

… Now I want to share with you three things I learned about myself that day.

I learned that it all changes in an instant. We have this bucket list. I thought about all the people I wanted to reach out to that I didn’t, all the fences I wanted to mend, all the experiences I wanted to have and I never did … I no longer want to postpone anything in life. And that urgency, that purpose, has really changed my life.

The second thing I learned that day … I regretted the time I wasted on things that did not matter with people that matter. And I thought about my relationship with my wife, with my friends, with people. And after, as I reflected on that, I decided to clear away negative energy from my life. It’s not perfect, but it’s a lot better. Ihave not had a fight with my wife in two years.

The third thing I learned ... I only wish for one thing. I only wish I could see my kids grow up. About a month later, I was at a performance by my daughter –– first-grader, not much artistic talent ... yet. And I’m howling. I’m crying, like a little kid. And it made all the sense in the world to me. I realized at that point that the only thing that matters in my life is being a great dad.

I was given the gift of a miracle(奇迹), of not dying that day. I was given another gift, which was to be able to see into the future and come back and live differently. I challenge you guys that are flying today, imagine the same thing happens on your plane, and how would you change? What would you get done that youare waiting to get done because you think youwill be here forever? How would you change your relationships and the negative energy in them? And more than anything, are you being the best parent you can be? Thank you.

It is a common belief that of all the wonderful gifts that we’ve been given, one of the greatest is freedom. That is why so many of us try to gain freedom at any cost. But are all kinds of freedom worthseeking?

One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds moving and dancing. As the strong winds blew against the kites, a string kept them in check.

Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining (约束) string and the tail kept them being pulled along, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say, “Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!” They flew beautifully even as they fought the restriction of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose. “Free at last,” it seemed to say. “Free to fly with the wind.”

Yet freedom from restraint, simply put,is at the mercy of an unsympathetic soft wind. It soon fell to the ground and landed in a mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. “Free at last” free to lie powerless in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to get stuck lifeless against the first obstruction(障碍物).

How much like kites we sometimes are. The Heaven gives us misfortunes and restrictions, rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength. Restraint is anecessarymatch for the winds of opposition. Some of us fought at the rules so hard that we never fly to reach the heights we might have obtained. We keep part of the rules or laws and never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground.

Let us each rise to the great heights, recognizing that some of the restraints that we may feel annoyed about are actually the steady force that helps us go up and achieve.

36.The kites struggled and trembled against the string because they ________.

A. was restrained by the windB. tried to gainabsolute freedom

C.wanted todancelikebirdsD. were at the mercy of the wind

37.What can we learn from the result of thekitethatbroke loose?

A.Freedom prevents us from flying.B.It is restraints that stop us rising.

C.Without restrains without freedom.D.There is no justice without freedom.

38. What does the underlined sentence mean?

A.If we want to fly higher, we should fight hard at rules.

B. People shouldnt obey rules because its hard to follow.

C. Rules are necessary for us to reach a higher level.

D. Some rules are too strict for people to obey.

39. In the author’s opinion, some of the restraints________.

A.are wonderful gifts given by the GodB.are something that we are upset about

C.can give us power to fly higherD. should be abolished right away

40. The passage is probably written for ________.

A. general peopleB. teenagersC. freedom seekersD. parents

D

Many of us know what it feels like to be an outsider in high school. Some give in to the pressure to fit in, others remain “on the bottom of the social food chain”. However, Alexandra Robbins, the author of the book The Geeks Shall Inherit The Earth believes what makes people unpopular in high school, mainly an unwillingness to obey, tends to translate into success as an adult.

Robbins has spent the past decade analyzing the behavior of high school students. She found the things that make a student different make them a target. But in adulthood and outside of the school setting, the things “that make you different make you interesting, fun, and often successful”.

She researched the qualities that people found most valuable in adults. The top qualities are: creativity, free-thinking, vision, authenticity, self-awareness, honesty, curiosity, love of learning, and courage. “Those are qualities that are far more likely to be found in school outsiders than in the popular kids,” she said.

According to Robbins, when people are in with a popular crowd, they are more likely to hide aspects of their identity in order to fit into the group. As she put it to Yahoo.com, “You are more likely to have goals of social dominance(社会支配性)rather than forming actual true friendships. You are more likely to let other people pressure you into doing things. None of those things is admirable or useful as adults.”

Meanwhile, in the eyes of Robbins, the outsiders are much more self-aware and much braver than the popular students. They are brave because they are sticking to being themselves in a challenging environment.

There are many celebrity (名人)examples of progress from unpopularity to later fame. Hollywood director Steven Spielberg was laughed at for being Jewish in high school. JK Rowling, author of hugely popular Harry Potter, was teased in school as a glasses-wearing child who lived mostly in books and daydreams.

Robbins encourages students to participate in out-of-class activities. “They will automatically meet people with similar tastes,” she told Daily Mail.

41.The underlined expression in Para. 1 means ________.

A. in a given location on the earth

B. at the low point in the society

C. below the group that consumes others

D. in a situation that limits a person’s freedom

42. According to Robbins, what can make a student a target in high school?

A. Difference to others. B. Pressure to fit in.

C. Unwillingness to conform. D. Behavior of high school students.

43. Which quality is NOT considered to be valuable in adults?

A. Being creative.B. Being authentic.C. Being different.D. Being curious.

44. Why do popular kids tend to be not as successful as outsiders?

A. They may have goals of forming actual true friendships.

B. They may hide aspects of their identity to fit in.

C. They may force others into doing things.

D. They may stick to being themselves in the society.

45. Which of the following statementsistrue?

A. Young people who are outside are successful as adults.

B. JK Rowling is one of celebrities of unpopularity.

C. Unpopular students develop skills while thepopular don’t.

D. Robbins encourages young people to be themselves.

第一节基础写作(共1小题;满分15分)

Dengue Fever, an infectious disease caused by viruses, is spread bymosquitoes.

The sources of infection are mainly patients with this disease and hidden infected persons, and some animals like bats, monkeys, birds and dogs are also possible sources of infection.

Suffers of Dengue Fever usually have a fever, headache, stomachache, muscle and bone pain and so on, so if such symptoms appear, we’d better see a doctor in time.

To protect ourselves and stay away from Dengue Fever, we are supposed not only to clear away the water on the floor at home to prevent mosquitoes from producing young, but also to spray mosquitocide to kill adult mosquitoes.

Besides, it is of great importance for us to strengthen our resistance, and therefore, we should have a balanced diet, combine work with restanddo sports regularly to promote better health.

第二节 读写任务(共1小题;满分25分)

A husband, busy with work and trifles, missed the deep love from his wife and felt regretful when hearing his very sick old wife said that she was glad that she hadn’t missed having him.

Reading the article, I feel it wrong that the husband should have kept ignoring the love from his wife. During the 50-year-long marriage, he had many chances to express his love to his wife, but he never did.

As can be seen, nowadays, it is common that many people, like the husband in the story, are always busy with their work or other things, missing many important things in their life. For example, they sacrifice all their time and health to meet the social expectations, unwilling to spend time on health care, missing the opportunity to be with their children in their growth and neglecting the loved oneswhocare forthem.

There is no denying that we should grasp every opportunity not to miss the important things in life and here I would like to give some suggestions. Firstly, we should think over and know clearly what is the most important in our life. Besides,it’s suggested thatweexpress our gratitude to our loved ones in words and show our care with actions.
