Spring is coming, and it is time for those about to graduate to look for jobs. Competition is tough, so job seekers must carefully consider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.
A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos(纹身), nose rings, or certain dress styles. It is true you can’t judge a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in order to convey(传递) certain messages. What we wear, including tattoos and nose rings, is an expression of who we are. Just as people convey messages about themselves with their appearances, so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept.
Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, but for businesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Most employers do care about the personal appearances of their employees, because those people represent the companies to their customers.
As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who would make the best impression on our customers. There are plenty of well-qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers. Even though I am open-minded, I can’t expect all our customers are.
There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices does not match that of your preferred employer. No company should have to change to satisfy a candidate simply because he or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards are legal.
      60. Which of the following is the newspaper editor’s opinion according to Paragraph2?

      A. People’s appearances carry message about themselves.
      B. Customers’ choices influence dress standards in companies.
      C. Candidates with tattoos or nose rings should be fairly treated.
      D. Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in the workplace.

      61. What can be inferred from the text?
      A. Candidates have to wear what companies prefer for an interview.
      B. What to wear is not a matter of personal choice for companies.
      C. Companies sometimes have to change to respect their candidates.
      D. Hiring managers make the best impression on their candidates.

      62. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
      A. Appearances Matter             B. Personal Choices Matter
      C.  Employees Matter          D. Hiring Managers Matter

      63. The author’s attitude towards strange dress styles in the workplace may best be described as    .
      A. enthusiastic    B. negative      C. positive       D. indifferent

      C
Garlic is perhaps best known for the bad smell it can leave on a person’s breath. But now, a new study suggests garlic should be recognized for its life-saving qualities.
Aged garlic extract(汁) reduces dangerous plaque(斑块) build-up in arteries(动脉), according to the study from the Los Angeles Bio-medical Research institute. That helps prevent the progression of heart disease.
Lead study author, Dr Matthew Budoff, said: “This study is another demonstration (证明) of the benefits of this supplement in reducing the accumulation(积累)) of soft plaque and preventing the formation of new plaque in the arteries, which can cause heart disease.”
The study involved 55 patients between the ages of 40 and 75, each of whom was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome(代谢综合症). The participants were screened at the beginning of the study to measure their total plaque volume. The screening were conducted through cardiac computed tomography angiography(血管造影术), an imaging technology that measures deposits(沉淀物)and build-up in arteries .
After being evaluated, the participants were given a dose of 2,400 milligrams of aged garlic extract each day. One year later, a follow-up screening was conducted. The study determined those who had taken aged garlic extract had slowed the total plaque accumulation by 80 percent. Furthermore, they demonstrated regression(衰退)for plaque.
Dr Budoff said: “We have completed four randomized studies, and they have led us to conclude that aged garlic extract can help slow the progression of atherosclerosis(动脉硬化症)and reverse the early stages of heart disease.”
The findings fall in line with a study last year from the University of Missouri. That study revealed garlic offers the brain protection against aging and disease. It also suggested garlic could even prevent age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
“Garlic is one of the most widely consumed dietary supplements,” said Zezong Gu, associate professor at the MU School of Medicine and lead author of the study. “Scientists are still discovering different ways garlic benefits the human body,” he said.

Report on the Survey about Our School Uniforms

I did a survey about our school uniforms in which I asked my classmates what they thought about our uniforms.

The result is that half of the students like it. They think it is fashionable and has a nice color. Besides, it is neat an tidy. At the same time, they feel there is no need to follow fashion. However, another 35% of the students dont like it. they find it uncomfortable to wear and the color is too dull. Moreover, they consider it old-fashioned and simple-styled. The rest of the classmates I surveyed, that is 15%, have no idea about it, because they dont care about clothing.
